The new tariff on many imported wines is a new challenge for the wine industry, especially since Lake District Wine prioritizes diversity, discovery, and small-scale producers across the globe. While a lot is still unknown, rest assured, it won’t shift our commitment to bringing you bottles that excite, surprise, and tell the stories of their regions.

For those who haven’t followed, the recently imposed tariff significantly raises the cost of many imported wines, particularly from key regions in Europe and South Africa. And it’s not just the importers and distributors feeling the gut punch—it’s the small, family-run wineries we love, farming with integrity, preserving tradition, and fighting for a place dominated by large-scale producers.

So, what’s our plan?

Transparency. You know us; we are transparent and will continue to be that way. Prices may shift, but we’re working closely with our importers and distributors to minimize the impact as much as possible. We believe in keeping great wine accessible and will do everything possible to make that happen.

Adaptability. This is an opportunity to dig deeper into lesser-known regions that aren’t as affected by tariffs. We’re talking about hidden gems from the US, our incredibly delicious local wines, South America, and overlooked pockets of the Old World that offer incredible quality and value. It’s a chance for all of us to explore something new and unexpected.

Advocacy. These tariffs don’t just hit wine lovers—they ripple through the entire industry, impacting small businesses like ours, as well as the farmers and artisans who rely on a fair and open market. We’re staying on top of the changes, working closely with our industry partners, and supporting efforts to push for trade policies that make sense for everyone.

Our goal remains the same. We’re still here to bring you wines that matter, wines with a sense of place, a connection to their makers, and a story to share. As always, we’re grateful for this incredible community that shares our passion.

We are trying to stay positive and are looking forward to sharing a glass with you soon.

Had an absolutely incredible tasting yesterday with Robert and Ryan from Brengman Brothers! From natty wines to traditional methods, and from stainless steel to concrete and foudre, they covered it all. Single varietals and stunning blends that rival their European counterparts—every wine had a beautiful, expressive mouthfeel thanks to native fermentation. I’m kicking myself for waiting so long to taste through their wines again. These gems are too good to miss! Keep an eye out for more Brengman wines at Lake District Wine Shop coming soon!

Freisa is Nebbiolo’s wilder, more rustic cousin—think of it as the rebel of Piedmont. This ancient grape, found in Chieri, Monferrato, and Langhe, might even be Nebbiolo’s parent, which explains their shared love of high tannins, bright acidity, and serious aging potential. Once the darling of noble vineyards (even Hemingway gave it a shoutout), Freisa fell out of fashion but has made a well-deserved comeback, thanks to passionate producers reviving its legacy.

Made in styles from dry to sweet, still to sparkling, Freisa is a flavor bomb of juicy red berries, earthy spice, and a hint of that classic Piedmont grip. It’s bold, food-friendly, and plays well with everything from rich, meaty agnolotti to spicy chana masala. With producers like Vietti, Vajra, and Mascarello championing it, Freisa is back—and ready to steal the spotlight.

We have several bottles in stock, stop on in for one, you’ll be happy you did!

It’s Wine of the Month Pick-Up Day! March’s feature is a high alpine French white from Savoie, France. This Apremont showcases vibrant fruit notes balanced by a finely chiseled minerality. On the palate, it is round and expressive, with bright lemon and subtle minty freshness leading into a delicate, lingering finish. The cheese pairing from The Cheese Lady Traverse City is an Extra Aged Prima Donna - incredible!

To celebrate Women in Wine, we’ve chosen a wine from one of our very favorite importers, MaryTaylorWine. Mary Taylor Wines emphasize the concept of “terroir,” where each wine reflects the unique character of its land and traditions, rather than simply focusing on grape varieties. Mary’s passion for European wines began in the 1990s and has since led her to work closely with artisan growers in Burgundy, shaping her belief that wine should reflect place, not just be a luxury item.

Mary created her brand to bring authentic, terroir-driven wines to the American market, representing regions like Bordeaux, Nßmes, and Valençay. Through partnerships with independent growers, Mary Taylor Wines offers wines of genuine quality at accessible prices, bringing the essence of each region to life in every bottle.

Today, we’ll be pouring some French favorites during Happy Day, and we’re thrilled to welcome Italian winemaker Igor Puscasu, who will be at the shop from 3-5 pm pouring wines from the Langhe region. Feel free to stop by anytime!

Wine Feature:

Blai FerrĂ©, ‘Ona’ Priorat

Winemaker Blai FerrĂ© himself fell in love with winemaking while a teenager working the ïŹelds with Álvaro Palacios, one of the leading winemakers not only in Priorat, but all the world. He then purchased two small lots of his own, about 12 acres worth of land from which he produces a scant 5,000 bottles of Ona per year.

Cultivation is organic and the harvest is hand-picked and hand-sorted. The wine is aged in stainless steel vats for nine months, giving the wine a remarkable freshness. Blai likes being self-sufïŹcient and doing everything himself and most of his time is spent working with his father-in-law at Celler Cecilio, the oldest winery in Priorat.

The name Ona has a family history! VinoVi&Co Importer, NĂșria, named her daughter Ona, which in Catalan means sea wave. Once she and Blai decided to collaborate on a wine, they put Ona to work to ‘design’ the label.

The winery makes its home in a rustic, remodeled World War II era airplane hangar in Walla Walla, Washington, and will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2025. The family-owned winery strives for excellence from vineyard to bottle, and sources fruit from several renowned estate vineyards in prime locations around the Walla Walla and Columbia Valley appellations. Dunham wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Trutina (Bordeaux-style blend), Three Legged Red (red table wine), Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Chardonnay.

With a strong heritage and a brand well-known throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond, we are committed to producing premium wines through gentle treatment in all phases of the winemaking process. Our goal is to bring something to the bottle that we enjoy and are proud to label with the name Dunham.

Stephen White as its National Sales Director. White comes to Dunham Cellars with over 15 years of experience in wholesale wine sales and nearly forty years in the hospitality industry.
