for September is here!

This month, we’re taking you on an unexpected journey in the wine world — to a place better known for tequila and cerveza — that’s right, Mexico! Little known fact, Mexico has been making wine longer than California…over 500 years!

One of the world’s most esteemed wine critics, Jancis Robinson, thinks that Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe in Baja California ranks as one of the most exciting wine frontiers, brimming with immense potential. She’s captivated by the region’s innovative winemakers, who blend old-world charm with new-world flair through bold experimentation with various grape varieties and techniques. Robinson also highlights Baja’s vibrant wine tourism scene with boutique wineries and culinary experiences that are attracting a growing number of global enthusiasts.

We love working with La Competencia Wine Imports, because of their deep familiarity and dedication to showcasing exceptional wines from Mexico. They focus their work on small, family-owned vineyards that practice sustainable and artisanal vineyard and winemaking processes. Their mission is to bring the richness and diversity of Mexican winemaking to a wider audience, featuring unique and high-quality wines from this burgeoning region. That’s why we are sharing wines exclusively imported by them.

drinking for August is here!

We’re thrilled to unveil the theme for your August wine club: the exquisite Albariño grape! Strangely, the name Albariño translates to “small white one from the Rhine”. Apparently, it was once believed to have originated in Germany (interestingly, the grapes themselves bear little resemblance to Riesling).

Albariño grapes span a broad spectrum of golden-hued shades, with large clusters that are typically more loosely packed than some other white wine grapes.

Just four years ago, a museum in Galicia discovered grape seeds that had been preserved in an old salt mine in Vigo, near the coast of Galicia. DNA testing confirmed these seeds were indeed Albariño, proving that this unique variety is truly indigenous to Spain.

Albariño is a delightful wine, so it’s no surprise that its popularity has spread beyond Spain and Northern Portugal to coastal regions worldwide.

Our tasting lineup includes two stellar examples from the grape’s heartland, the renowned Rías Baixas region in Spain, where Albariño has been cultivated for centuries. These two wines perfectly capture the essence of the cool coastal climate and the mineral-rich soils that make this region a paradise for Albariño.

In contrast, we’ll also explore how this versatile grape flourishes under the sun-soaked skies of California’s Central Coast, offering a New World interpretation that brings a fresh perspective to this classic varietal.

Cheers to a vibrant summer and the joys of discovering new flavors!

for July is here!

It’s midsummer, and Lake Michigan is at its bluest. Fireflies light the dusk, corn on the cob is on the table, the tomatoes are starting to ripen, and the basil is just perfect. I love summer for its simple joy and fun. I have seen family and friends at their most relaxed. I can’t get enough of being outdoors and enjoying the slow sunsets and long, warm evenings. It is hard to find a better wine than Gamay that fits right into my summer fun. It’s easygoing, bright, cheerful, and deliciously juicy. So, for this month’s wine club, let’s play Gamay every day and in every way!

Cheers,
P. & E. Mullins

for June is here!

This heat wave makes us want to just sit around and drink a bunch of cold, delicious Muscadet, so we thought you might too; and we happen to have three incredible wines from the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation in Western France. It lies in the lower part of the Loire Valley, near the Atlantic Ocean. The wines produced here are known for their idyllic pairing with seafood, especially oysters. Do yourself a favor and preorder some fresh oysters, or pick up a shrimp cocktail from Flagship Specialty Foods in Lakeside. These wines’ crisp acidity and mineral qualities make them an excellent match for a perfect summer evening, and we are fortunate enough to have been getting many of those nights lately.

Cheers,
P. & E. Mullins

Come meet the maker this Monday June 17th from 4 pm to 6 pm eastern.

Winemaker Todd Alexander’s fervor is rooted in the meticulous creation of terroir-driven wines that authentically express the distinct qualities of specific vineyard sites. His unwavering dedication encompasses the vineyard and winery, ensuring an uncompromising approach to winemaking.

We will be showcasing -
Force Majeure from Walla Walla Washington,
Holocene from Willamette Valley Oregon
&
Beatus from Chateauneuf-du-Pape in the Rhone Valley of France

Before joining Force Majeure, Todd held the position of Winemaker at the renowned “cult” winery, Bryant Family Vineyard, in the Napa Valley. During his tenure at Bryant, Todd collaborated closely with industry luminaries such as vineyard manager David Abreu and renowned winemaking consultant Michel Rolland. In 2014, driven by a desire to elevate Washington state’s winemaking standards, Todd embarked on a new chapter with Force Majeure. His mission: to contribute his expertise and artistry to the creation of truly world-class wines, pushing the boundaries of winemaking excellence from our unique sites.

for May is here!

There was a time when I thought of the wines from Spain and Portugal; I assumed big reds with strong tannins and overly extracted fruit. Over the years, I have learned that I was quite wrong about that, and after exploring the region more, it has led me to find some of the most unique and fresh wines that are very terroir-driven and that showcase a sense of place I want to explore more. So, for the kick-off of our high season in Harbor Country (as we call it), we share three distinctive whites from the Iberian Peninsula. Its diverse geographical qualities include mountains like the great Pyrenees, plains like the Meseta Centrail Plateau and long coastlines and rivers such as the Ebro, Tagus, and Douro.  The climate varies from the Mediterranean climate on the eastern and southern coasts to the northwest’s oceanic environment and the interior’s continental climate. These differences impact the region’s agriculture, flora, and fauna, allowing for different expressions of the over 350 indigenous grape varietals. The wines that follow are so vastly different from one another and really highlight the diversity of the region.

Cheers,
P. & E. Mullins
