How to properly store wine?π·
There are two kinds of wines: the ones that have fantastic longevity and can be put in storage for decades, and those that should be drunk asap (give or take a year or two preferably).
Over 90% of wines in the market are not made to age, which means that the individual character of these wines is quickly lost over time.
In any case, good storage will help preserve wine.
1) Store the bottles in the horizontal position. If you keep them vertical, the wine will not moisten the cork; when it gets dry, it shrinks and lets oxygen in and evaporates liquid out.
2) Keep it in the dark. Direct light contact on the wine makes it age faster while decreasing essential sensory properties, like taste, smell, and body.
3) A constant and low enough temperature is crucial; the best range is between 46 and 57 degrees. It's ok to increase the temperature by a few degrees, but sudden jumps are undesirable. Especially in Florida, making sure that your wine fridge is kept on a separate system or investing in an emergency generator for your wine fridge can be advantageous during hurricane season.
4) Constant humidity between 60% and 80%. In a dry environment, the cork will dry out very fast. If it's too humid, the label has a higher chance of curling or falling off.
5) Keeping your wine in a well-ventilated area away from intense or pungent smells would be for the best. Wine may absorb the scents around that will influence the taste and aromas. That's why it's better to store wine separately from cheese, cold cuts, onions, and other foods.
6) Some people suggest storing wines in environments with low vibration. However, this part has no solid scientific research and enough evidence to call it fair.
If you don't have a wine fridge, a cellar, or a rented space in specialized wine storage, keeping wine in the refrigerator is an okay-ish temporary solution.
