ATTENTION ANGLERS!!!!! We are very sad to announce that due to the lack of safe ice ( as you can see in the picture) we are forced to lean to the side of safety above all else and CANCEL our annual ice fishing derby. Instead next Saturday, February 24th, we will be hosting a membership drive, and will also have info available for the Lake Colby outdoor camp where if we can get interest we are looking to sponsor a few youth members to attend.

Food will be available Saturday from 1-5 pm during the membership drive. Food is free but donations to the club are greatly appreciated.

Lake ice this weekend though mid-week (when things finally freeze again) will be tricky. It's especially thin most places near shore from the runoff. Pressure ridges are completely unstable, the cracked ice on either side of the ridge isn't refrozen. Pressure cracks have widened. Ice is getting candled in places. These are conditions we usually see in mid/late March.

This SxS went through at the inner Malletts Bay ramp a couple days ago & the ice has gotten worse since. Be careful.

Goodmorning fisherman we hope the ice is forming this morning. A few updates:

1)Mother Nature hasn’t been very friendly with the ice fishing community this year. Luckily for you, you’re able to fish ice or open water, especially Southern New England! Don’t let the lack of ice discourage you from tournament fishing!

2) As expected from the unfortunate weather, we have yet to hit our expected number of participants. Please reach out to your friends and spread the word, let them know they don’t need ice to fish!! Prize structure will be based on percentage of purse. Please see website for updated prize list.

3) We have discount links available! 50% off for Active Military, Veterans, Law Enforcement, and First Responders, as well as Students and Faculty! Also discounts for participants of the Long Lake Ice Fishing Derby and the Hollandstrong Annual Ice Fishing Derby, as well as all of our sponsoring baitshops customers! We are a veteran family and are honored to give discounts to where it’s much deserved! If you have yet to see the links, send us a message and we will send it to you! If you are fishing in a tournament, or plan on it, send us a message for a discount!

4) Tomorrow, Wednesday, we will be sending and posting instructions on two things. How to properly measure and send us your fish from the ice, and how to find and view the leaderboard! For our baitshops, we will be sending you instructions on how to officially measure, record and check in a fish.

Last but not least, we can’t thank everyone enough for helping make this happen!!!! Excited is an understatement to be hosting our first tournament, and can’t wait for year number two!!

Sorry, hit the wrong post in the previous share!

We held out as long as we could, and unfortunately, due to the upcoming weather forecast and existing ice conditions the 2024 Island Ice Fishing Derby is canceled. Our number one priority is the safety of all anglers, and mother nature is just not cooperating.

Any tickets bought online will be refunded. If you purchased your ticket in person, you may return to the location of purchase for a refund. If you are not able to return to the location of purchase please call 802-868-4459.

We will not be selling any sweatshirts this year. If you would like a sweatshirt we do have previous year left overs, on sale, at Martin's General Store for $15.00 each on a first come first serve basis.

We appreciate all that participate in the Islands Ice Fishing Derby and look forward to seeing you next year. Thank you for your continued support and please be safe out there!

🚨NEW THIS YEAR🚨
We are now requiring each ticket holder to sign a waiver. With this being said, we are not allowing the purchasing of tickets for other people. You must individually buy your own ticket in person OR choose to purchase online. Tickets will not be valid unless waiver is signed.

After counting all of your votes we are officially announcing Dark Heather Grey sweatshirts this year. Sweatshirts will be available at Martin’s General Store and The Green Frog in South Hero for $35 each.

Be safe out there!

40° temps with rain coming Thurs/Friday will make areas that are good ice now unsafe to walk on by the weekend.

Complicating things....

Both Keelers Bay & Malletts Bay had large sections freeze over differently on different days. The ice sheet is not consistently thick across these & other bays. So far it's another weird ice year.

Keeler Bay froze west shoreline first, out east several hundred yards in places. Most of the bay stayed open water for a few days after the west shoreline area froze. The transition from thicker to thin ice is some random spot a ways offshore that doesn't necessarily follow depth.

Outer Malletts Bay froze over a day or two after the inner bay. So people have been out fishing & skating on the inner bay, but Outer bay ice is only 3" thick (except for Sandbar etc).

Inner Malletts Bay froze initially with small patches of open water scattered around. See photo from Jeff Lefebvre's drone footage. Those random thin patches that froze over late will get even thinner by the weekend.

Looks like lake ice will get bad right in time for the weekend. Maybe not the shallows like Sandbar, Keelers Bay south end, Carry Bay etc, but lots of areas normally good this time of year will have bad ice by this weekend.

Drill test holes, have ice picks throw rope etc if you do go out. Stay safe.

With cold temps ahead parts of the Lake are starting to freeze. Please remember No Ice Is Safe Ice! The lake needs time to freeze to a “safer” thicknesses and even though it might get thick in areas please remember the thickness and integrity of the ice can change within a short distance.

More information about ice safety will be posted each day this week to help ensure you are better prepared this season.
