Affordable Napa Cab. Crazy name. What gives?
Well, many of you will know Johnathan Maltus from the crown jewel in his body of work—Chateau Le Dome St. Emillion. It’s expensive, hard to find, and represents a seminal ‘garagiste’ bottling which influenced the culture of Bordeaux production, marketing and collecting in the mid-90s.
Eventually, Maltus duplicated in Napa that he had done in St. Emillion—extraordinary, small-parcel wines that were not tied to a Chateau or Estate. Enter “If Six Was Nine”. As an English fella, Maltus was as much an outsider in Napa as he was in Bordeaux. So the Hendrix lyric and reference to 60s counter culture captures the ethos both of his place in the world and that of his wines.
But, how is wine? In a word—fantastic! These parcels are shared by producers charging a great deal more with a lot bigger names. It has a vibe that reads “We both know I could be $150, but to heck with all the Napa insider-only, drop-marketing nonsense” It’s less “if you know you know”, and more, “if you don’t know, let me tell you.” Getcha some, and tell your friends.

Phylloxera never made it to this archipelago, and some vines here are over 200 years old! It’s owned by Spain, but is actually much closer to Morocco (don’t ask them about the Spanish rule thing).
Fronton De Oro references a huge rock on the estate that shines with reflective sunlight. The wine itself reflects the untamed character you’d expect from ancient volcanic soil off the coast of the western Sahara. Killer value for an organic red from a region that’s been making wines since before Columbus set sail for our fair country! Give this a go, and warm up from the inside out.
