In celebration of International Women’s Day this month, and the first day of Spring today, we are delighted to highlight some remarkable women winemakers.

We want to highlight 2 women winemakers from Gruet Winery, Carrie Gurule and Sarah Cabot.

A stalwart hidden gem at Gruet Winery for years, Carrie has traveled widely, studying under French, Italian, New Zealand, and American winemakers. She brings specialized experience in vineyard and winery operations management, and has been responsible for Gruet’s cellar processes, quality control, and lab management.
In New Mexico, where Carrie was born and raised, she embraced the art of making sparkling wine in the Champagne-style method for which Gruet is beloved. Her favorite part of being an assistant winemaker: "Making new yeast babies and watching them grow."

Sarah, a prominent Oregon winemaker, has crafted award-winning Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines for over 15 years. Her expertise extends to sparkling wines, earning accolades from esteemed publications and competitions. Today, Sarah crushes 1,300 tons of Pinot Noir each harvest – putting her in a select group of large-scale Oregon winemakers who also earn critical acclaim each vintage. She is also one of the only women on that list.

In celebration of International Women’s Day this month, we are delighted to highlight some remarkable women winemakers.

Then & Now: from Merry to Heidi, the passion for crafting profound wines continues. We're all about the meticulous details: from canopy management to high-temperature fermentations, and so much more.

A Sonoma County native and trained scientist who spent more than two years in the Peace Corps in Africa, Heidi is both determined and open-minded in her approach. After receiving a degree in chemistry from Santa Clara University in 1997 and teaching high school chemistry in Tanzania, she returned to Sonoma County to work as a lab technician and then enologist for Kenwood Vineyards. After three years as assistant winemaker at Mauritson Winery, Heidi jumped at the opportunity to work with Richard Arrowood as associate winemaker in 2007 before taking over as winemaker in 2010. Five years later, Merry tapped Heidi as her successor, and the two worked side by side until Merry’s retirement in 2020.

During this dinner pairing experience, we will compare wines from vineyards that encompass the winery’s two main terroir features: Volcanic Ash soil and Marine Sediment soil.

Throughout this 5 course dinner pairing, we will be introduced to the winery to open, will compare 6 different Pinot Noirs through 3 courses, and of course, close with something sweet
