Deck the halls with boughs of holly! Fa la la la la, la la la la!

Holly has long been a Christmas staple but do you know how this came to be? There is long list of folklore when it comes to Christmas Holly.

If you like holiday history buckle up for a quick holly history lesson! If you don’t, keep scrolling your feed. (After you like our photo of course)

Holly and the holiday season can be traced back to the Romans where it was the sacred plant of Saturn. In honor of their god of agriculture, Romans would send boughs of holly to their friends to mark the Saturnalia festival which was celebrated between December 17th-23rd.

Holly became a symbol of good luck which led to people hanging it outside of their home. If you are superstitious it is important to take your holly down by twelfth night (January 6th) or you will have bad luck!

The Celts and Druids believed holly was magical and would fend off evil spirits. The dawning of holly wreaths became tradition and was thought to ensure the return of spring.

Holly decoration soon got moved indoors as a symbol of both protection and good fortune.

Holly also came to have significant symbolism in the Christian faith. The prickly leaves represent the crown that was placed on the head of Jesus. The red berries represent the blood. The evergreen nature of holly represents eternal life.

Holly was first mentioned in Christmas caroling in the 15th century. And during the Renaissance the famous “deck the halls with boughs of holly” was sung and has been a hit ever since!

Many European Christmas traditions moved across the Atlantic with colonist which included holly as decoration in and around the home.

We fast forward to today where holly is found just about everywhere during the holiday season! The obvious holly and Christmas connection is that the green and red represents the seasons colors perfectly!

Merry Christmas!
