Keen's Performance Engines

Keen's Performance Engines Junior Keen began building race engines while he was still in his teens. Through the years, he's had untold wins in circle track, hydroplane, and drag racing.

Although now semi-retired, he continues to build engines for selected customers.

Yesterday, we hosted a fundraiser for one of our former employees, Tim Worrell. Several of our engine customers came to support the cause, and we had a race boat and Sprint car on display. The deejay interviewed Grant Liddycoat (hydroplane driver) and Matt Mullins (Sprint Car driver), and Junior videoed it. We wanted to share it here on our page, because we were impressed by the professionalism and ease with which these two chatted.

Jim Martin's GP hydro was at Keen's today. Motor Man helped with a starter issue. MUCH louder in real life!

The latest "toy" at Keen's. This is a 468 cu. in. engine for a Grand Prix Hydroplane. 2000 horsepower. It burns 6 gallons of alcohol per MINUTE during a race. The engine turns 8000 rpm, and the blower (supercharger) turns 9600. The rules restrict it to a 20% overdrive. There's a gearbox on the back to increase propeller spead to 9600 rpm. Straightaway speed is around 170 mph. (The swishing sound is the microphone on my camera trying to keep up with the volume...)
