Sidney Oktoberfest Needs Your Help!

For 50 years, Oktoberfest has been a beloved tradition in our community, bringing people together for a weekend of food, fun and celebration. It began as a Chamber event in Legion Park, but as the event grew in both size and popularity, Oktoberfest relocated to the Cheyenne County Fairgrounds to better accommodate our guests and the evolving festivities.

Over the years, the event has seen many changes. We've gone from hosting two beer gardens to one, due to a lack of sufficient volunteers to staff multiple areas. Now, once again, Oktoberfest is at a crossroads. The organizing committee is dwindling, and we need your help to ensure this great event continues.
Currently, the Oktoberfest committee consists of six Board members and five members at large. We have several open chair positions that need to be filled to keep the event running smoothly.
Without these positions filled, Sidney could lose one of its most iconic events.

The following chair positions are open:
• Tent Chair: Responsible for overseeing the setup and takedown of the event tent, coordinating the placement of the stage, lighting, bleachers, banners. This role also works with the electrician and food vendors to ensure everything is properly set up, and helps organize the machinery needed for moving heavy items.
• Parade Chair: Acts as the point of contact for the parade, managing all aspects of the event- parade lineup, recruiting volunteers, and coordinating with the city and state for necessary approvals and permits.
• Wristband and Ticket Chair: Responsible for recruiting and organizing volunteers to sell tickets and glassware, and for checking IDs during the event to ensure everyone is safe and compliant.
• Entertainment Chair: The current chair needs assistance with booking entertainment for the event.
• Weiner Dog Race Chair: This person would oversee the popular Weiner Dog Races, ensuring the event runs smoothly.

Oktoberfest is more than a festival- it’s a homecoming! Families plan reunions around it, friends reconnect, and visitors from across the region fill our hotels, dine in our restaurants and support local businesses. It’s a celebration of Sidney’s spirit, and it puts our town on the map. This event helps fuel our local economy and showcases Sidney as a welcoming, vibrant community.

To ensure the continued success of Oktoberfest, we are asking for your help. Our 11-member committee works tirelessly year-round to plan and execute this cherished event. We take great pride in ensuring that all proceeds are reinvested into Oktoberfest to cover the costs of entertainment, accommodations for performers, sound systems, beer, tents, mugs, staging, electricity, and more.

Oktoberfest meets every third Thursday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Transportation Office located at 1433 Illinois. Our next meeting is on March 20th at 6 p.m. We would love for you to join us and help continue this cherished tradition.

This festival belongs to Sidney. Let’s not lose it. Join us. Get involved. Help us keep Oktoberfest alive!

Thank you to one of our group members for sharing this Cheyenne County Fair comment from Gina Elsen. Unfortunately it was not a post so we can't share it, but the comment said,
"Lack of carnivals. After covid a lot of companies went out of business. Members contacted as many companies as they could. There are three problems they encountered. One, our fair is too small for a lot of them to justify coming; they just don't make enough money here. Two, after covid most got locked into long-term contracts. At that time Cheyenne County wasn't in a position to secure a long-term contract. Essentially you have to buy a carnival to come to your fair, and its a hefty fee. Yes, we had the budget to secure a carnival this year, we just couldn't find one available. Three, too far for them to travel.

We need community support to grow fair! We need community support to secure a carnival!

However, this year we do have plenty of kids activities Thursday-Saturday. Adrenaline Alley will be 5-9 each night for a small fee of $5. Inflatable houses, mechanical bull, climbing wall, and a VR gaming trailer capable of holding 24 players will be available. Tickets can be purchased in the ticket office.

Free events: Friday we've got dance lessons before the concert starting at 5 pm. We've also got the pedal tractor pull at 5 pm open to the public and ages 4-12. Tractors are provided. Fri and Sat we also have juggling acts and a Hypnotist."

The Risks Behind Doorbell Cameras: A Cautionary Note

In the era of smart homes, doorbell cameras have surged in popularity, touted as a front line defense for home security. These devices offer the allure of safety through remote monitoring and interaction capabilities. However, they bear an often-overlooked risk: inadvertently inviting burglars by revealing your absence.
Why Telling You're Not Home is Risky

The convenience of telling someone through your doorbell camera that you're not home might seem harmless, but it can be a beacon for burglars. Intruders often look for the easiest target, and knowing a house is empty is an open invitation.
Smart Usage Tips

Be Vague: Never explicitly say you're not home. Keep any communication non-revealing.
Pre-Recorded Messages: Opt for generic, per-recorded responses that don’t hint at your whereabouts.
Consider Silence: Sometimes, not answering is the safest bet.
Layer Your Security: Enhance your doorbell camera with additional security measures to keep your home safe.

The Bottom Line

While doorbell cameras are a valuable security tool, they must be used wisely. Avoid making your home an easy target by being mindful of how you communicate through these devices. A strategic approach to security can make all the difference.
