-Long-Range Forecast Update-

A pattern change is increasingly likely in the 10-14 day timeframe. The first big trough is expected to move through next weekend (something to watch as it could impact us), which will gradually break the westerly flow and go northwesterly. This is expected to happen between February 5th and the 12th. However, this pattern change will be different than the last one in several ways.

-This one is expected to last longer, potentially well into March.
-A gradual pattern change is expected, with colder and more active conditions starting around the 6th, but the arctic air isn't expected to come until the third week of February (timing could change).
-We aren't expecting as cold of temperatures as the one earlier this month, but 10-15 degrees below average is possible.
-No SSW (Sudden Stratospheric Warming) event is currently expected.

Although no pattern change is the exact same, there are some similarities that I'm seeing with the last one compared to the expected one in the 1-2 week timeframe.

-This is a favorable setup for significant winter storms.
-Shots of brutally cold air (wind chills below zero?) are possible during the last two weeks of February and into March.
-The lake effect could be significant with the northwest flow and cold air in place.

The image shows the temperature anomalies aloft. They don't look overly impressive (dark blue), but that's because we are 10-14 days away from an ensemble, so they are conservative. We will have more updates as we get closer, but the chances for a pattern change continue to rise.

Stick to the main roads

People keep asking how it Is on two tracks and seasonal roads.

Still snow so this is what can happen easily.

Wrecker Is going by alot so don't end up with a big wrecker bill.

Use extreme caution and don't venture off the main roads yet.

Our next system brings two rounds of wintry mix and heavy snow. Projected snow accumulations from Friday evening into Saturday could exceed 18" of snow in many areas. This is NOT set in stone as a shift in the track of the system will change where the highest amounts will end up. Regardless, plan for sloppy conditions. Stay tuned for changes to this!
