Who doesn’t love a good viral trending ? This holiday season, give the date-covered caramel apple trend a try. 🍎🍏 This concept replaces the traditional candy apple wrap or caramel dip with soft, fresh Medjool dates, offering a more naturally healthy approach to this sweet treat. Then drizzle it, decorate it and slice it beautifully for sharable serving! Here’s how:

It’s important to start with a few key ingredients: number one is fresh soft, pitted Medjool dates. An ample amount will be required to cover each apple completely when rolled out. Next, big green apples of a sweet and sour variety, such as Granny Smith, plus wooden caramel apple sticks. Finally, the fun stuff β€” 🍫 dark chocolate and white chocolate candy melts for drizzling, 🌰 crushed nuts or seeds, 🍬 mini caramel or butterscotch chips, candy bars for crushing, sprinkles. Go wild; there are no rules when it comes to decorating! Now to start:

1️⃣ Split and pit several large Medjool dates and place them close together on a piece of wax paper. They will need to be close enough to overlap when rolled out to form a thin β€œsheet,” much like a candy or caramel apple wrap.

2️⃣ Wash and dry as many apples as desired. Remove the stems and pierce the apple in the center with a wooden candy apple stick. Then place one apple on the date sheet. Using the wax paper to assist, tightly form the date sheet around the apple, covering it completely.

3️⃣ Time to decorate! Drizzle with melted chocolate or colored candy melts (great for a theme party!) and load it up with festive sprinkles or small candies (like mini M&Ms). This is the fun part for the little ones so get the whole family involved!

When it comes to holiday hosting and serving, sometimes it’s best to keep it simple! With fun and easy foods from appetizers to desserts, the main focus should be on the celebration itself and connecting with guests, not the fuss of preparing a feast. πŸ’›

With so many delicious local provisions, such as the plethora stocked in our pantry, a little help from the store can result in a scrumptious spread without the stress! Stop in or order online for holiday hosting, shopping and gifting!

December is filled with holiday merriment, parties, feasts and lots and lots of Christmas cookies! πŸͺπŸŽ„πŸ¬ For those that are celebrating with a good old fashioned cookie exchange, or simply for those that love to bake and enjoy cookies over the season, we're sharing a classic date ball recipe in celebration of the holidays!

Classic Date Ball 🌴

Ingredients
8 oz. fresh dates, pitted
Β½ c. butter
1 c. granulated sugar
3 c. crispy rice cereal (get creative with varieties such as cocoa, frosted or cinnamon sugar Rice Krispies)
1 c. chopped nuts of choice (such as pecans, walnuts or pistachios)
1 tsp. vanilla, almond or orange extract
Β½ c. confectioners’ sugar or coconut flakes for rolling

Directions
* Add dates, sugar and butter to a medium saucepan and cook over low heat until the sugar fully dissolves
* In a large bowl, add crispy rice cereal, nuts and vanilla or extract of choice
* Remove date mixture from heat and slowly fold into the crispy rice mixture
* Pour confectioners’ sugar or coconut flakes into a shallow bowl
* Roll date/rice mixture into golf-ball size, then roll into confectioners’ sugar or coconut flakes
* Place on wax paper to set until all mixture is used. Then store or enjoy!

This recipe makes about 24 date balls and they can be easily whipped together to give as a hostess gift or to add to a charcuterie board as a sweet treat. Did you know there are different types of dates? πŸ’› No, we’re not talking blind versus double – we’re talking varieties of dates, here! 🌴

Here's a quick guide to some of the types we offer:

πŸ’š Medjool Dates – Available year-round, these are the most well-known and often considered the "best" dates due to their large size, sweetness, and soft, moist texture. We sort them by size and moisture content: Jumbo (largest, sweetest, juiciest), Large (still sweet but smaller), and Fancy (smaller, with looser or broken skins and slightly drier). Medjools are versatile, perfect for eating fresh, dried, gifting, or baking.

πŸ–€ Black Sphinx Dates – Available in the Fall, these smaller, sweeter dates with thin skin originated in Phoenix in the 1920s. They’re rare, primarily grown in Arizona, and are recognized by Slow Food USA as an Ark of Taste Food, meaning they're at risk of extinction.

🀎 Khadrawy Dates – Also available in Fall, these dates are smaller than Medjools, offering a mild sweetness with a soft, caramel-like texture.

Additionally, we offer a variety of specialty dates from local Phoenix growers, such as Barhi, Honey, Halawi, Hayani, Khalasa, Maresco, Maktoom, and Deglet. These are typically available now through November. πŸ“†

No matter how you plan to use them – whether for baking, salads, or snacking – we have a date variety to suit every occasion! Explore the textures and flavors to find your favorite in the Palm & Pantry or online at sphinxdateco.com |

Certain foods are deeply connected to holiday celebrations, often carrying symbolic meaning. With Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur approaching, we’re highlighting some of the key foods that play a central role in these traditions. ✑️

🍯 Honey – Rosh Hashanah marks the start of the Jewish New Year and the beginning of the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of reflection and repentance, culminating in Yom Kippur. Honey represents the hope for a "sweet" year ahead. It’s used for dipping apples and challah, and honey cakes are also common.

🍞 Challah – A Rosh Hashanah meal isn’t complete without challah. This braided egg bread, usually round or spiral-shaped to symbolize community, is shared around the table and served with honey.

🍎 Apples – Traditionally, apples have been a reliable fruit, able to thrive in various climates. Apple trees offer their fruit without protective leaves, symbolizing resilience, much like the Jewish people themselves. Dipping apples in honey is a well-known Rosh Hashanah custom, symbolizing the wish for a fruitful year.

🌴 Dates – One of the seven species of Israel, dates are integral to early celebrations and were often used to make honey, highlighting their historical significance.

We encourage those celebrating or gifting to consider incorporating these traditional foods to start the year sweetly. We offer a variety of dates, local honeys, and treats to enhance the holiday or any day! Stop in to the pantry or order online at sphinxdateco.com πŸ’› |
