Did you know there are different types of dates? πŸ’› No, we’re not talking blind versus double – we’re talking varieties of dates, here! 🌴

Here's a quick guide to some of the types we offer:

πŸ’š Medjool Dates – Available year-round, these are the most well-known and often considered the "best" dates due to their large size, sweetness, and soft, moist texture. We sort them by size and moisture content: Jumbo (largest, sweetest, juiciest), Large (still sweet but smaller), and Fancy (smaller, with looser or broken skins and slightly drier). Medjools are versatile, perfect for eating fresh, dried, gifting, or baking.

πŸ–€ Black Sphinx Dates – Available in the Fall, these smaller, sweeter dates with thin skin originated in Phoenix in the 1920s. They’re rare, primarily grown in Arizona, and are recognized by Slow Food USA as an Ark of Taste Food, meaning they're at risk of extinction.

🀎 Khadrawy Dates – Also available in Fall, these dates are smaller than Medjools, offering a mild sweetness with a soft, caramel-like texture.

Additionally, we offer a variety of specialty dates from local Phoenix growers, such as Barhi, Honey, Halawi, Hayani, Khalasa, Maresco, Maktoom, and Deglet. These are typically available now through November. πŸ“†

No matter how you plan to use them – whether for baking, salads, or snacking – we have a date variety to suit every occasion! Explore the textures and flavors to find your favorite in the Palm & Pantry or online at sphinxdateco.com |

Certain foods are deeply connected to holiday celebrations, often carrying symbolic meaning. With Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur approaching, we’re highlighting some of the key foods that play a central role in these traditions. ✑️

🍯 Honey – Rosh Hashanah marks the start of the Jewish New Year and the beginning of the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of reflection and repentance, culminating in Yom Kippur. Honey represents the hope for a "sweet" year ahead. It’s used for dipping apples and challah, and honey cakes are also common.

🍞 Challah – A Rosh Hashanah meal isn’t complete without challah. This braided egg bread, usually round or spiral-shaped to symbolize community, is shared around the table and served with honey.

🍎 Apples – Traditionally, apples have been a reliable fruit, able to thrive in various climates. Apple trees offer their fruit without protective leaves, symbolizing resilience, much like the Jewish people themselves. Dipping apples in honey is a well-known Rosh Hashanah custom, symbolizing the wish for a fruitful year.

🌴 Dates – One of the seven species of Israel, dates are integral to early celebrations and were often used to make honey, highlighting their historical significance.

We encourage those celebrating or gifting to consider incorporating these traditional foods to start the year sweetly. We offer a variety of dates, local honeys, and treats to enhance the holiday or any day! Stop in to the pantry or order online at sphinxdateco.com πŸ’› |

It’s finally fall! 🍁 Some may call autumn β€œbaking season” and for good reason! Check out our simple tips to make baking easy and fun this season.

πŸŽƒ Use What’s in Season β€” Fall is famous for pumpkin spice, but don’t stop at just the spice! Try using pumpkin puree in your baking for moist breads and muffins, especially when paired with cinnamon-sugar and pecans. Apples are another versatile fall favorite. You can substitute applesauce for eggs or oil in many recipes, and adding chopped apples to muffins or breads creates a deliciously moist result. Don’t forget sweet potatoes! Their smooth consistency and mild flavor are perfect beyond just pie or casseroles.

🌴 Make Simple Swaps β€” Just like swapping out eggs with applesauce, there are many healthy and easy substitutions. Dates are a natural alternative to white sugar or honey and can be chopped, blended into a paste, or made into syrup. It’s a great way to β€œveganize” recipes that call for eggs or honey while adding sweetness and texture.

πŸ₯§ Have Fun β€” Baking is all about experimentation! You might discover a new favorite recipe. Make it social by getting the kids involved with apple oatmeal cookies, hosting a pie-baking party, or spending a date night in the kitchen creating seasonal desserts.

Embrace fall in your own way. For those who love to bake, now is the time! For those that are looking for some inspiration (or some snacks and sweets already prepared!), stop into the Palm & Pantry. πŸ’› |

In addition to great food, there will be plenty of fun and informative activities at Date Night, which is hosted in partnership with Slow Food Phoenix, a nonprofit that promotes local and indigenous food systems. We're excited to announce the special delivery of locally grown Yellow Barhi dates β€” available in-store for just a limited time only! They will only be here a few weeks so get them while they last! πŸ’›

These specialty dates are harvested in the Khalal stage of development prior to ripening. At this stage, the dates are crunchy like an 🍏 apple with a crisp texture and semi-sweet flavor. While most people know the many ways to enjoy and cook with Medjool dates, Yellow Barhi dates have their own unique characteristics that make them enjoyable in different ways.

Like other dates, they are a great source of vitamins and nutrients. Yellow Barhi dates can be enjoyed skin on but watch the pit! Much like other date varieties, they complement a number of πŸ₯— dishes and can simply be enjoyed as part of a πŸ§€ charcuterie platter or thinly sliced or diced for dessert toppings.

If left out, Yellow Barhi dates will continue to ripen and mature. At this stage, they are creamy and ideal to be used as spreads (served with brie and crackers, for example) or used into smoothies or dessert recipes such as cobblers. They are rather perishable, so enjoy them within a few days or store them in the refrigerator to preserve their life a bit longer. The yellow and semi-ripe stage of the date is known as the khalal stage, the fully ripe stage is called rutab and dried it is known as tamr.
