Our Story
The owner of The Schenectady Trading Company moved to Schenectady at the age of 5 and has a love for the City and its unique American heritage. After selling her original photography and poetry in the marketplace, she began to envision a space that was specifically focused on highlighting Schenectady County. Why limit these pursuits to weekend festivals and farmers’ markets? The store will be a place where both residents and visitors can find affordable goods that are created locally and also find items that are inspired by the area and its history - architecture, invention, electricity, locomotives, Erie Canal heritage, Dutch and indigenous origins, and the Mohawk River. This inspiration started with some souvenir items - framed prints, magnets, calendars, mugs, etc. - and quickly grew to incorporate products from other local makers and manufacturers living in and around Schenectady. The owner has done the legwork to bring all of these products under one roof so that local is truly local! If you have friends or family in town, are passing through as a tourist, or want to send a care package or gift to out-of-towners with a connection to the city, The Schenectady Trading Company is the place to shop. More than that, it endeavors to be a gathering space for nearby residents to get connected to their community in a warm and inviting atmosphere.
