Grantville-Allied Gardens Kiwanis Club We are back to meeting in person again! Meetings are now held at the Palisades Church in Allied Gard

The Kiwanis Club of Grantville-Allied Gardens was founded in 1960. Today, we are an active and fun group of volunteers doing our part to bring the community together! We proudly sponsor the SDSU Circle K club, Patrick Henry Key Club, Lewis Middle School Builders Club, and the Hearst Elementary School K-Kids Club. For more information about membership and upcoming projects, visit our website.

Happy 101st Birthday to the eighth wonder of the world, Gene Elmore. Gene is a WWII veteran, a Navy pilot who flew hundreds of missions over Europe (including on D-Day in 1944) and Japan, and post-war humanitarian relief for the Berlin airlift.

He has been a member of our Kiwanis Club since March of 1969 (that's longer than the San Diego Padres have played Major League Baseball) and continues to attend meetings on a regular basis. He was our club President in 1974-85 and Lt. Governor in 1985-86, winning the Kiwanian of the Year Award in 1982-83.

We are lucky to have Gene and his wife, Wanda, still with us and we hope to hang onto them as long as we can. (Newsletter attached is from Gene's 100th birthday last year.)

We remember the long and generous life of Cal Pancheri, who passed away just a few days ago. Cal would have turned 100 next March.

Originally from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Cal spent 28 years as a member of our club. In 1999, he relocated to the city of Poway, where he spent another 25 years in the Kiwanis Club there. He was well-respected and accomplished in both clubs, even getting his daughter and granddaughter to join the Poway Kiwanis Club as well. He was the patriarch of three generations of service, and a trailblazer for our organization in many ways.

Farewell and thank you, our old friend.

If anybody would like to contribute to help with expenses, there is a GoFundMe campaign set up.

Did you know that for just $200 per year, your business can join Kiwanis? Our corporate membership option allows a business to join our club -- with all the rights and benefits of any other club member! You may send a single representative to our club meetings, or send a different staff member or employee each week.

This unique option allows your business to support our important community projects and programs, while giving your employees a chance to get involved in their local community.

It's a great networking opportunity and a great way to show the Grantville-Allied Gardens neighborhood that, as a locally-owned business, you care about our community.

(No meeting this week due to Thanksgiving -- we will see you on November 7th!)

Plenty of volunteer opportunities this weekend!

This Friday, October 25: we have Trunk-or-Treat events at Foster Elementary School and Mission Valley Church of the Nazarene, after school.

Here is the link for volunteer needs at Foster Elementary School on Friday, October 25th. Volunteers are asked to sign up in advance: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0845ADAA28A0F94-51706812-foster

We also have a Trunk-or-Treat event at our meeting place, Palisades Presbyterian Church, this Saturday, October 26th from 4:30 to 7. We will take ALL available volunteers, you do NOT need to be a Kiwanis member to help out!

We hope to see everyone tomorrow (Thursday, October 24th) at Palisades Church, 5:30 p.m. We'll be discussing the latest updates on our Kiwanis Youth Protection guidelines, making sure that we're compliant with all the standards and background checks before we go to work with the kids of the community.

As sponsors, supporters, and advisors to multiple youth groups (including Hearst Elementary School K-Kids, Lewis Middle School Builders Club, Patrick Henry High School Key Club, SDSU Circle K, and San Diego Cub Scout Pack 928), protecting youth is our top priority.

Join us this Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. (at Palisades Presbyterian Church) as we review the important steps Kiwanis International takes every year to ensure that we are providing a safe and secure environment for our students, including background checks for all adult advisors.

It's something that we take very seriously as we work to make our community a safer place for people of all ages.

Our club holds a special breakfast meeting once per month to recognize some outstanding students from local schools like Hearst, Lewis, and Patrick Henry.

Stop by and see us this Thursday morning (October 17) at 7:30 a.m. to meet these amazing students, their parents, and their teachers and principals. You can also find out about the latest happenings around the community and help us eat a delicious breakfast -- thanks to Grocery Outlet for always providing us with some delicious fresh fruit in the morning! We'll be meeting at Palisades Church (6103 Birchwood Street).

Evening meetings will resume on Thursday, October 24 at 5:30 p.m. No meeting on October 31st, so everyone can stay home and enjoy their Halloween.
