This week’s staff pick comes from Hobo Wine Co out of Santa Rosa California. Their Folk Machine White Light white blend is a beautiful aromatic bright wine that is a very versatile pairing partner. A blend that only California can bring together of Tocai Friulano, Riesling, Verdelho, and Sauvignon Blanc each providing a unique characteristic that makes this a special wine. Friulano - a saline minerality, Riesling - orange blossoms and aromatics , Verdelho - Citrus and nutty notes, and Sauvignon Blanc - lean austerity from it’s bright acid. The juice from each of these is fermented individually and then filtered together into stainless steel before bottling. We love this wine with spicy foods, with rich foods, it also is a treat by itself! This week’s Staff Pick is Anarkos Red Blend from producer Felline. This red wine comes from the boot of Italy, specifically Puglia. It is made from typical red grapes grown in this region - 60% Negroamaro, 30% Primitivo, 10% Malvasia Nera. This wine has a wonderful velvety texture and is bursting with ripe dark fruit flavors, followed by spiced notes of cassis, licorice, and nutmeg. It’s juicy and easy drinking, yet has a tannic structure that could match up with bolder pairings. It’s a great wine to introduce yourself to these unheralded varietals from this beautiful region in southern Italy. his week’s staff pick is Bulli, Colli Piacentini Ortrugo. We know that’s a mouthful, but we will help break that name down. This beautiful white sparkler from the producer Leonardo Bulli comes from the Hills, aka Colli in Italian, around the town of Piacenza in Emilia-Romagna. The grape this wine is made from is a delightful indigonous variety called Ortugo which makes herbal mineral driven wines and is organically farmed from vines up to 50 years old. This is an easy drinking wine often referred to as “farmer-fizz” as often this would be enjoyed over lunch in the vineyard! With notes of ripe stone fruit, and a subtle herbaceousness, this wine is a crowd pleaser and great to sip on it’s own or to pair with lighter style meals. This week’s staff pick is Nortico Alvarinho. This bright and zippy white wine hails from Northern Portugal in the Minho Region. This maritime environment is where this grape thrives and can be tasted in the mineral laced salinity embodied within. The grapes for this wine are harvested from many tiny vineyards in and around the towns of Mancao, and Melcago, aged in stainless steel for 4 months and bottled. The final product is Crisp, refreshing, with notes of bright citrus, and stonefruit, and would pair beautifully with light cheese, salads, and seafood. The beautiful blue and white label is an homage to the winemaker's family who also produces decorative tiles which this area is known for as well. This week’s staff pick is Solomon Estates “The Verve” Shiraz/Mataro (Mourvedre) Blend. Coming from the Fleurieu Peninsula south of Adeladie in South Australia. This wine is coined as an alternative wine by the wine maker rather than using the term natural, as they question what an artificial wine is. Alternative, meaning minimal intervention in the wine making process, use of native yeasts, and minimal addition of SO2 to preserve the final product. The Shiraz adds fruity notes of red and black berries as well as the attractive savory & gamey flavors often seen from this grape with the Mataro bringing expressive tannins, providing the structure to the wine. Aging in used oak barrels helps to round out and soften this wine. An excellent pairing for a weekend BBQ. This week’s staff pick is Division Wine’s Willamette Valley Pinot Noir Method Carbonique. This wine is a nod to the wines of Beaujolais, made using a method called Carbonic Maceration in which CO2 is used in place of Oxygen in stainless steel tanks to start the fermentation process within the grapes themselves. The result is a lovely rendition of Pinot Noir bursting with notes of strawberry jam, and cloves finishing with the tangy texture so often found in wines of this style. This is a perfect summer red worthy of a light chill and warm evening on the patio.
