Sebastian Heck Long Shank Acorn w/ Masur Birch Handmade Briar Pipe, New

Sebastian Heck is part of younger generation of highly skilled artisans to have emerged from Germany in recent years. Based in Heidelberg, Heck took up pipe smoking—and, ultimately, pipe-making—as part of a conscious effort toward slowing down in an otherwise constantly accelerating modern world. Like many pipe-makers, Heck took his first steps into the craft as a restorer of estate and heirloom pieces, which in time brought with it an expansion of his workshop and the tools housed within it. With this as a base, creating new pipes of his own was a natural progression. Heck’s development has been greatly influenced by the Danish and German schools of pipe design, and has included time spent learning directly from fellow German artisans, such as Dirk Heinemann.

As with another pipe listed recently, with this one we find Sebastian Heck paying tribute to the great Lars Ivarsson. More specifically, here Heck is putting his own spin on the “acorn” shapes Lars inherited—and reinterpreted in his own turn—from his father, Sixten Ivarsson. The pipe brings together the long, flowing lines and bulbous bowl of the Ivarssonian acorn, while also weaving in elements of the more contemporary “fig” shapes by way of a sharp “foot” at the bowl’s base. As a last touch, the pipe is dressed in a crisp, dark sandblast finish and capped with a stabilized Masur birch accent, lending the overall design a striking black and gold motif.

James Upshall Bark Grp 6 Rusticated Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

James Upshall was, along with Ferndown and Ashton, part of a new wave of British hand-made, high-grade pipes in the late 20th century, with their founders largely coming from previous positions in the factories of companies such as Dunhill and Charatan. James Upshall was founded in 1978 by Barry Jones and Ken Barnes, both of whom had previously worked for Charatan and who had worked their way up to being carvers Charatan’s higher-end, non-standard shapes. Jones and Barnes’ pipes quickly grew to being something of a status symbol, and were enjoyed by King Hussein of Jordan, Anwar Sadat, Bing Crosby, Yul Brynner, Robert Wagner and Tom Selleck. The company also made house-brand pipes for Astleys in London. Sadly, James Upshall pipes are no longer made, but their reputation as some of the finest handmade British pipes lives on.

I’d never seen a rusticated James Upshall until recently, but after doing a little digging, it looks like Barry Jones and co. began offering them as a means of diversifying their available products. For reference, when James Upshall was founded, the company only sold smooth pipes. But, in the later decades of the 20th century, a pretty strong case was being made by other English workshops, such as Ashton and Ferndown, that there was nothing stopping a sandblasted or a rusticated pipe from being handmade and high-grade—something the Italians had known for even longer. This one is a very English bent Dublin, with much in common with the freehands put out by Ken & Barry’s previous employer, Charatan.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.

Brebbia First Calabash RTDA 2005 Rusticated Briar Estate Pipe, Italian Estates

Named for the company’s home township, Brebbia was founded in 1953 by Enea Buzzi, an alum of Savinelli’s manufacturing division. Still in operation 70 years later, Brebbia is one of Italy’s oldest extant pipe companies, with production still being undertaken using simple lathes and traditional methods of hand finishing. More recently, Brebbia has also collaborated with master artisan carvers from across to design some of its pipes, such as Denmark’s Rainer Barbi, Germany’s Otto Pollner and Holger Frickert, Italy’s Fausto Fincato, and Japan’s Tsuge.

As I’ve mentioned in previous listings, Brebbia’s “First” series are their “top quality” pipes, i.e., in the English sense of “first place.” This is in contrast to, for example, the Anglophone notion of a “first pipe,” one that would be purchased just as one is getting into the hobby (Brebbia’s “Prima” line used for the latter). Hence the Brebbia First pipes tend to be highly distinctive designs, adorned with sterling silverware, like this impressive, pebble-dash rusticated Calabash model. This First Calabash is slightly more special than even the standard production model, as it was made for the Retail To***co Dealers of America (RTDA) convention in 2005, a pipe and to***co show that artisans and companies used to attend, often using this as an opportunity to show off their premium wares.
The condition is fair. Rim darkening and some finish fading.

19th c. CPF Best Make w/ Amber Stem & Gold Filigree Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

The Colossus Pipe Factory, known by its initials C.P.F., is a make that is – as of yet – still a little shrouded in mystery. What is known is that the make was established in 1851 and that it was owned by Kaufman Bros & Bondy (later of Kaywoodie fame) by at least 1898. It is also understood that the make disappeared, and was therefore likely discontinued, at some point between the mid- to late-1910s, with the exact year still under debate.

Unraveling the history of these CPF pipes we’ve had in recently has been a blast. As I mentioned in a previous listing, I was able to find out – thanks to a small, ancient piece of paper tucked into one of the CPF pipes’ bowls – that the make was founded in 1851. This, coupled with the more extensive work done by Steve Laug and his interlocutors on the Reborn Pipes blog, allowed me to narrow down a relatively specific period in time when these pipes were made, starting 1851 and ending at some point between 1884 and 1898. After the 1884-1898 window, Kaufman Bros & Bondy absorbed CPF and the KBB emblem was added to CPF pipes, which neither this nor those previous ones show any trace of. This is, therefore, a guaranteed 19th century pipe, and certainly not a low-end one either. From its amber stem, to its (presumably electroplated) gold filigree mountings, to its fitted clam-shell case, this CPF will have been intended for special occasions, such as gifts and awards.
This pipe is completely unsmoked. In fact, it still has its guarantee inside the bowl. There are some natural, hairline fissures within the amber stem, but nothing to compromise its structural integrity. I’ve adjusted the price to reflect this in any case.

As with other pipes of this vintage We’ve sold, I will note that, for buyers, I would advise handling the pipe with more care than the average briar. Amber is a little more brittle than the ebonite or acrylic used for modern pipe stems, and the tenon on this one looks like it may be bone, which is more brittle than Delrin and the other tenon materials used today.

MBSD Meerschaum Silver Reverse Calabash Rhodesian Block Meerschaum Pipe

The MBSD Meerschaum Silver is our new series of silver mounted meerschaum pipes. Using the same high-grade, fast-coloring Turkish meerschaum found on our Deluxe series, these pipes exclusively feature silver army mounts or spigot mounts.

As with many of our meerschaum pipes, the design of this one was inspired by Danish artisan renditions of the classic Rhodesian shape. The intent was to capture the spirit of those made by such figures as Sixten Ivarsson, Jorn Larsen, and S. Bang, but this time with our own spin of a reverse calabash chamber system nestled in the pipe’s broad shank.

Michel Naturals 255 Smooth Canadian Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Michel pipes were store-brand pipes made for Maison Michel, a North Carolina (USA) to***conist run by Michel J. Mitchell between 1951 and 1980. Over the years, several prominent pipe-makers made pipes for Maison Michel, such as Charatan, Barling, and others.

Another perfect clencher from Maison Michel! Good size, good bowl capacity, and this time only 24 grams. I’d love to be able to find out definitively who made each of the Michel house pipe lines, as even among the many high grades we get in, they’ve become some of my favorite pipes.

This Michel is also completely unsmoked. There are a couple of worn out fills, so I’ve adjusted the price a little.

Stanwell Zebrano Smooth Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

Unlike the Buffalo line, Stanwell’s Zebrano refers not to the animal zebra but to a species of hardwood, that being zebrawood. This wood has been favored by Danish artisans for decades, with Stanwell contributing their own pipes to this minor tradition by way of pipes with zebrawood shank extensions. These extensions are paired with a golden brown stain that matches them very tastefully. As indicated by the stamping, this is a Danish made Stanwell from the Borup factory, likely 1998-2009 production.

The condition is fair. Rim darkening, some finish fading, and a couple of handling marks.

Peterson Donegal Rocky 53 Rusticated Lovat Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

As with another Donegal Rocky we recently listed, you may look at this one and notice that it does not look like the Donegal Rocky pipes sold by Peterson today. As Mark Irwin over at Peterson Pipe Notes documents, the series has undergone several revisions since its debut in 1945, with the style of rustication and color changing each time. This one looks to be from some time in the early 21st century. There’s an enjoyable depth to the finish, as well as a texture that allows for an interesting use of stains of differing hues.

Morgan BlackJack 30 Sandblasted Bulldog Briar Pipe, New

Debuting all the way back in 2014, the BlackJack is one of the great success stories of American pipe-making in the 21st century. Conceived by California’s Chris Morgan (who would also go on to create the wildly successful Bones series), the Blackjack was conceived as a way to apply the techniques and design principles that Morgan had established as a high-grade, artisan pipe-maker to something more affordable. With the combined expertise of Morgan and of the established Italian pipe factories charged with manufacturing, the BlackJack has been a mainstay among pipe smokers ever since.

James Upshall P Grade Grp 4 Smooth Bent Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

James Upshall was, along with Ferndown and Ashton, part of a new wave of British hand-made, high-grade pipes in the late 20th century, with their founders largely coming from previous positions in the factories of companies such as Dunhill and Charatan. James Upshall was founded in 1978 by Barry Jones and Ken Barnes, both of whom had previously worked for Charatan and who had worked their way up to being carvers Charatan’s higher-end, non-standard shapes. The company also made house-brand pipes for Astleys in London. Sadly, James Upshall pipes are no longer made, but their reputation as some of the finest handmade British pipes lives on.

The “P” was the highest of James Upshall’s standard grades, notable for its excellent grain patterns. Taking its name from Charatan’s “Perfection” grade, the P was also Barry and Ken’s attempt to create their own version of the warm, walnut contrast stain used by Charatan. The Upshall boys were a little bolder when it came to comparing the P grade to Charatan in terms of quality however. As Ken Barnes would later recount, the P was, rather, much closer to Charatan’s “Distinction,” which in Charatan’s system was considerably higher than the “Perfection.” This one is a very nice bent billiard shape, one which uses its contrast stain to light up its wealth of bird’s-eye and cross grain patterns. It is also lightweight enough to be a comfortable hanger.

This pipe is completely unsmoked with an original bowl coating. Some very slight handling marks from over the years, though it seems only to admire it.

Viprati 5 Clover Smooth “Cup and Saucer” Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates

Much like in Denmark or Japan, many of the great names in Italian artisan pipe-making got their start working for other greats in their famous workshops. This was the case for artisans such as Giancarlo Guidi, Luigi Radice, Sergio Ascorti, and Maurizio Tombari. Luigi Viprati, on the other hand, is one of the few self-taught Italian pipe-makers of the 20th century to have reached the same heights as such contemporaries. First picking up the craft in 1972, Viprati would ultimately become one of the defining names in Italian pipes, which he remains to this day.

For the uninitiated, the “cup and saucer” was a Charatan shape—or, more accurately, a genre of shapes—and one of the very first freehand designs sold by the company. Conceived by a young Barry Jones as a means of rescuing a large stummel with conspicuous briar imperfections, Jones shaved away a significant portion of the wood around the bottom of the bowl, resulting in a pipe that resembled a “cup” (the upper section of the bowl” sitting on a “saucer” (the base section). Reuben Charatan was surprised and impressed in equal measure, and similar designs were produced many times over the years. And, of course, as with any great shape, other pipe-makers have produced their own renditions in the decades since, from Michael Parks to Castello. Here we see Luigi Viprati making his own version, and it is quite spectacular. Had the pipe been made at Charatan, I imagine it would have attained something like one of the Supreme grades, or even one of the Achievements. As it is a Viprati, it earned a full five out of a possible five quadrifoglio (in English, “four leaf clovers”.

The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening and one spot of char on the inner rim, along with some very slight handing marks, but the pipe has nonetheless been well looked after, as it should be.

Savinelli Sasso 701 Smooth Lovat Briar Pipe, 6mm, New
It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.
The Sasso is one of a number of new lines released by Savinelli this year, all of which have really impressed me. The Sasso might be my favorite, and indeed might be my favorite Savinelli release since the Miele, which I adore. Coming from the Italian word for “stone,” the Sasso is distinguished by its marbled acrylic stem, as well as a collar formed by off-white and light blue acrylic bands. It’s colorful, but very tasteful. This Sasso is a classic, lightweight Lovat shape, with a light brown stain that sets off plenty of bird’s-eye gleam in the briar.
Like most contemporary Savinelli pipes, this one has a tenon that will fit 6mm filters, such as Savinelli’s own balsa filters, but the pipe will perform just as well without a filter if preferred.

MBSD Meerschaum Deluxe Rusticated Apple Block Meerschaum Pipe, Briar-Mortise

At MBSD we sell a lot of high-grade, high-quality pipes from various iconic makes, but the pipes we’re most proud of are our meerschaums. Right from the beginning, we wanted to offer the best smoking meers on the market, and to do this, we had them made with two distinct features. First, we made sure that they were made with block meerschaum that was carefully selected to be the most lightweight, pure, and porous available, meaning it would also color more quickly and evenly as it is smoked. Second, for our Deluxe meerschaums, we had the pipes made with a patented Briar-Mortise system that is closer to the stem connection on a briar pipe than a standard meerschaum. This is because, on our Deluxe models, the mortise is made from briar itself, while the tenons used are made from Delrin. This allows for more precision construction of the pipe’s draft hole, as well as a general extra durability and longevity.

This particular Deluxe was inspired by the voluptuous apple shapes of modern Danish pipe-making, paying tribute to the likes of Former, Anne Julie, and Kurt Balleby. It features a broad and enjoyably round, palm filling bowl, and a good, deep chamber.

Bennie Joe Smooth Horn Handmade Briar Pipe, New

Bennie Joe Pipes are made by Bennie Joe, an Indonesian artisan based in Jakarta. A trained architect and part-time pipe-maker for much of his life, he took on the latter full-time after a downturn in the property market during the dark days of 2020 and after. An interesting aspect of Bennie Joe pipes is that they are made primarily with hand tools, rather than many of the woodworking machines pipe-makers employ. While the chambers and draft holes are drilled, the body of the pipe is formed using hand tools, creating genuinely freehand shapes reminiscent of those made in mid-century Denmark. It should come as no surprise that one of Bennie Joe’s heroes is the late, great, Bo Nordh.

The horn has a long-established role within Danish and Danish-inspired pipe-making, thanks in large part to the pioneering designs of Sixten Ivarsson and Bo Nordh. Here we see Indonesia’s Bennie Joe paying his own tribute to the latter, as so many have done. The result is a long (though relatively lightweight), distinct piece, covered in flame grain that seems almost to explode in the form of a rim of plateaux briar.

Sean Reum Contrast Sandblasted Bent Pot Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates

Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.

This particular Reum is from his earlier years, though it nonetheless showcases the same talents that make him such a hot property today. Like his contemporary work, it features a superb, ring grain sandblast and contrast stain combination, making the briar patterns really “pop” visually. A more distinct and interesting aspect about the pipe, however, is its design, with Reum looking to have taken cues from Ireland’s Peterson pipes, rather than the Danish and Danish-American style his pipes typically embody today. In fact, it almost looks like a more upmarket System pipe. Given that this will have been made before Peterson debuted its Rua and Iora finishes, it appears that Reum was very much ahead of the curve—just as he continues to be.

The condition is very good. Some darkening and finish fading on the rim.

Sergey Cherepanov Smooth Brandy Nosewarmer Estate Briar Pipe, Other Estates

As part of the “Muscovite School” of artisans that has emerged in the last few decades, Sergey Cherepanov first apprenticed in pipe-making under Victor Yashtylov and Mikhail Revyagin. Since then, he has become one of East Europe’s premier pipe carvers, creating shorter, compact works that nonetheless carry with them the grace of the Danish masters and the heft of the Eurasian ones. This can be seen clearly in this nosewarmer-length brandy. It’s broad, bulbous, and a little muscular, while having its extraordinary “angel hair” straight grain left relatively undisturbed by a light, blonde stain. Ideal for someone who’d like a pipe as pretty as a WO Larsen Pearl that also fits easily in one’s pocket.

Paul Becker Grade H Smooth Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, German Estates, 9mm

Paul Becker is one of Germany’s most accomplished artisans, which is impressive given the competition he’s been up against over the decades. I’ve followed his career for many years—so many, in fact, that I remember when he used to stamp his pipes “Paul Becker,” instead of “PaulPipes.” You see, probably the only hurdle that Paul had to face during his career was confusions between him and the late, great Paulo Becker, back when Paolo was still around. This bent Dublin from Paul Becker demonstrates that, at the very least, he never had to worry about such confusions undermining his talent. In addition to being a lovely, flowing, and slightly asymmetrical, freehand Dublin, the bowl is loaded with flame grain and bird’s-eye. The stem is also inlaid with an exotic hardwood, which Becker frequently employs. Looks like African blackwood, but I could be wrong.

The condition is very good. Some inner rim charring, pushing the top of the chamber slightly out of round. The pipe is chambered for 9mm filters as standard, such as Vauen’s charcoal or Savinelli’s balsa varieties.

Dunhill 1977 Red Bark 41032 w/ 9ct Gold Band Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates

To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the to***conist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.

The Red Bark is one of several discontinued lines within Dunhill’s history, with its closest contemporary analog being the Ruby Bark. It was introduced in 1972, featuring a sandblasted, almost claret red finish. This one, from 1977, is a rather special Red Bark, with two main reasons for this. The first, and most obvious, is that it sports a 10mm, engine-turned, 9 karat gold collar (possibly fitted by Les Wood, given the time frame), a rare feature sold by Dunhill at a steep premium. Such pipes were often advertised by Dunhill as potential gifts or awards for the lucky pipe smoker in one’s life. The second reason this Red Bark is special is that, as a pipe from the late 1970s, it was made when Dunhill’s shape chart included design variations not available for Dunhill pipes today. This is why the pipe has a five-digit shape code, with the last digit indicating some variation on the base shape indicated by the first four. This 41032, for example, is the 4103 “billiard,” but with a slight difference in the style of the bowl to the 41031 or 41033 models. This shape system only existed for a few years, with Dunhill soon reducing it to the four-digit system still used today, with 4103 being the sole group 4, taper stem billiard manufactured.

The condition is good. Some rim darkening and a couple of spots of char on the inner rim, and some finish fading. The pipe has nevertheless been well preserved, and deservedly so.
