Sebastian Heck Sandblasted Tomato w/ Second Stem Handmade Briar Pipe, New

Sebastian Heck is part of younger generation of highly skilled artisans to have emerged from Germany in recent years. Based in Heidelberg, Heck took up pipe smoking—and, ultimately, pipe-making—as part of a conscious effort toward slowing down in an otherwise constantly accelerating modern world. Like many pipe-makers, Heck took his first steps into the craft as a restorer of estate and heirloom pieces, which in time brought with it an expansion of his workshop and the tools housed within it. With this as a base, creating new pipes of his own was a natural progression. Heck’s development has been greatly influenced by the Danish and German schools of pipe design, and has included time spent learning directly from fellow German artisans, such as Dirk Heinemann.

The tomato is a very old shape in the world of briar pipes but, as with many of the staples of Anglo-French design, it is one that was completely transformed by movements in artisan pipe-making after the Second World War. Instead of the diminutive proportions found on the tomatoes of Chacom, Ropp or Brulor, the shape became wider, fuller, rounder—in a way that, quite fittingly, mirrors the domestication of the fruit itself. This tomato, from German artisan Sebastian Heck, follows in the footsteps of carvers such as Jess Chonowitsch by way of its squat-yet-voluptuous frame, allowing for a greater expression of the bowl’s ring grain sandblast. Heck’s color scheme is far more unto his own, however, choosing to pair a near-black stain with a choice of either a similarly black SEM ebonite stem, or one cut from orange Juma.

Stanwell DM 1997 Sandblasted Apple Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

It has been a tradition for many years now for Stanwell to provide pipes for the many slow-smoking competitions that take place across Denmark. This is why some Stanwells can be found with initials such as “SM,” “RM,” or, as with this one, “DM.” The “M” stands for “mesterskab,” which is Danish for something like “championship”; intuitively, the “D” on this one stands for “Danmarks.” So, it was made for the Danish national slow smoking competition. As it was made in 1997, it is also one of the last models to feature an ebonite stem, rather than the acrylic adopted as standard in 1998. I also seem to remember that Bent (Benner) Nielsen designed this one, though I can’t be 100% sure. Either way, it’s a lovely, distinctly chubby apple, which has become a staple of Scandinavian design.

The condition is very good. Some wear to the rim and minor finish fading.

Radice Rubino Spiral Shank Lovat Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates

Radice is one of the great Italian workshop pipe makes, belonging to a historic lineage of such workshops. The company began as a family affair, being established in 1980 by Luigi Radice, along with his son, Gianluca, and father, Paolo. But Radice’s pipe-making ‘family’ is a little larger than that. Prior to founding Radice, Luigi ran Caminetto, which he had founded with Guiseppe Ascorti in 1968. Prior to Caminetto, Radice had worked alongside Ascorti in the Castello factory, under the supervision of its owner, Carlo Scotti. It’s quite an impressive genealogy, which is clearly reflected in the quality of Radice pipes.

Taking its name from the Italian for “ruby,” the Rubino line has become relatively uncommon in recent years. The other interesting thing about it, at least to me, is that, amidst a field of virgin blonde Italian pipes, it’s a finish that recalls, instead, the deep red hues of classic English makes. This particular Rubino does, however feature one of Radice’s more idiosyncratic design elements, that being a spiral shank that transforms the pipe from a fairly standard Lovat to something highly distinct.

The condition is very good. Some darkening and a spot of char on the inner rim. Nothing major though.

Heck’s development has been greatly influenced by the Danish and German schools of pipe design, and has included time spent learning directly from fellow German artisans, such as Dirk Heinemann.

While the poker is arguably one of the defining shapes of traditional Anglo-French pipe-making, it has also come to occupy a similar role in the far more modern design movements associated with post-war Denmark. While there are numerous examples of traditional shapes being reinvented and revitalized by artisans in Scandinavia and beyond, the evolution of the modern poker—and with it, certain other shapes such as the cutty—has been markedly different from, for example, that of the modern brandy or Rhodesian. While the latter are famous for their formal extravagance, it is the former’s functional properties that have have been the key to their renewal, with figures such as Tom Eltang leading the charge. This particular poker, by German artisan Sebastian Heck, combines the signature ergonomics of its traditional and modern exemplars with just enough aesthetic bombast to keep the design fresh without intruding on that essential functionalism. The result is a compact and relatively lightweight sitter, with a canted, conical bowl that blooms into a rim of bare plateau.

Mastro Geppetto Sandblasted Fluted Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked
Mastro Geppetto pipes are made by the Italian workshop brand Ser Jacopo. One could call them Ser Jacopo’s series of ‘affordable’ pipes, and while this would be correct purely from the standpoint of price, it wouldn’t be entirely fair to them in other regards. Geppetto pipes are hand made from the same high-grade briar as Ser Jacopo pipes, but the former do not use the plateau cuts that the latter does, which are more expensive; Geppetto pipes also tend to be simpler shapes, meaning they do not require the use of the highly technical flexible drilling machinery that Ser Jacopo’s wilder shapes do.
I’ve mentioned in previous listings how the Mastro Geppetto make gives Ser Jacopo’s carvers the opportunity to explore styles of pipes that simply do not fit in with the established Ser Jacopo aesthetic. I’ve also noted that a significant number of Mastro Geppetto pipes are made in the Anglo-French mold, in contrast to Ser Jacopo’s signature modern Italian one. On its face, this Mastro Geppetto would appear to be exactly that: a saddle billiard, just as might be found on a mid-century Comoy’s or GBD. Upon close inspection, however, it looks to be far more experimental. Aside from the mixed finish, the bowl bears a fascinating fluting of its sides. This combined with that partial sandblast gives it a decidedly time-worn appearance, much like the fumed stains seen on Castello’s Old Sea Rock pipes.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It also comes with its original sleeve.

Comoy’s Tradition 126 Smooth Pot Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates

Comoy’s is a historic brand in pipe making, and possibly the most historic brand in the making of briar pipes. Though originally founded in 1825 by a French family from Saint Claude, France, production of Comoy’s pipes was soon moved to London, England, where it established itself as one of the quintessential English pipe companies.

There are few names for a pipe as fitting as Comoy’s Tradition line. This is not only because, retrospectively, Comoy’s represents one of the giants of traditional pipe design and manufacture, but because the line was introduced in 1925 to already mark 100 years of Comoy’s pipes. This Tradition is, as one could guess, a classic Anglo-French pot, with a wide chamber well suited for mixture and ribbon cuts.

The condition is good. Some handling marks and rim darkening.

Volkan Morta Brandy w/ Olivewood Estate Pipe, Italian Estates

Introducing the Volkan make requires a brief detour into Italian pipe history. Jean-Marie Alberto Paronelli, born in 1914, was one of the ‘fathers’ of Italian artisan pipe-making, a renown he achieved through pipes made under his own name, through designs he contributed to major Italian makes, and through his distribution of other artisan makes, such as the Clairmont pipes made by Tommaso Spanu. When he was old enough, Jean-Marie’s son, Antonio Paronelli, also took on making Paronelli pipes; when Antonio’s son Ariberto came of age, he too took on the Paronelli pipe-making name. But Ariberto wasn’t the only son of Antonio to become a pipe-maker, so his other son, Alberto, created Volkan pipes as a sister make to Paronelli.

Morta is a fascinating material. It is also commonly known as bog oak, which gives some indication as to its nature. It is essentially oak that, thousands of years ago, became buried in the wetlands of Eastern Europe, and in the time since fossilized into a dark and very dense form of wood. This makes it well suited for to***co pipe bowls, as pioneered by artisans such as Patrice Sebilo and Josef Prammer. This morta pipe, carved by Italian artisan Alberto Paronelli, is a distinctly Danish looking brandy, with a ferrule cut from another briar alternative, that being olivewood.

The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening, but nothing major.

Peterson Pub Pipe Rusticated Oom Paul Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Peterson’s House Pipe series features some of the largest pipes offered by the historic Irish make, each being hand made from designs based on Peterson’s Oversized range from the late 1800s. I suppose you could say that they’re for smoking “on your own time,” such as one spends at home when the pressures of the wider world are least felt, and a good few hours can be spent with your favorite blend. This one is the Pub Pipe variant, which is ever so slightly smaller than the standard House Pipe, and wears Peterson’s rocky house rusticated finish. It still sports an appropriately – and indeed – impressively deep chamber, as well as features also found on Peterson’s Deluxe System pipes, such as the patented reservoir system, a condenser, and a sterling silver army mount.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It also comes with its original box and sleeve.

The Briar Workshop Smooth Cherrywood Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates

The Briar Workshop was an integral part of a new generation of North American pipe-makers in the second half of the 20th century, and helped create a new American hand made pipe movement. Originally based in Vermont, USA, The Briar Workshop was founded by Jorg Jemelka and Eliot Nachtwalter. Over the years, Jemelka and Nachtwalter were joined by pipe-makers such as Finn Andersen, Brad Pohlmann, J. T. Cooke, and Carole Burns. As the name implies,

The Briar Workshop was not a factory, like much of American pipe production up until this point, but a workshop, where artisans could hand make distinct pipe designs not found in factory catalogs.
What a fascinating blend of Danish, American, and even French styles this pipe is. The bowl’s freehand shaping is, of course, Scandinavian in origin, allowing for the expression of some truly extraordinary straight grain; yet the pipe’s virgin blonde stain and golden acrylic stem point to a far more American attitude toward color composition in pipe design. Despite being a Danish-American freehand, however, there is still something of the classical cherrywood to its tipsy sitting figure, albeit one updated with a conical bent and a bare plateau rim.

The condition is great. Some inner rim darkening.

HS Studio Sandblasted Acorn Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

While China has long been associated with cheaper factory pipes, a new generation of artisans and workshops have emerged over the past decade, producing some genuinely excellent pipes. HS Studio is an example of the latter, being a Hong Kong workshop dedicated to crafting handmade briars, typically in shapes and styles reminiscent of the post-war artisan scene.

From what I’ve seen of HS Studio pipes, their carvers are heavily influenced by the later generations of Scandinavian pipe design, as well as their followers in Europe and America. This particular pipe shows affinities for the acorn shapes of Lars Ivarsson and Nanna Ivarsson, but I can’t help but think there will have been little of Wolfgang Becker’s signature wasp shape in its conception. The finish is very nice, with a good, consistent ring grain exposed by the sandblasting, and the shank accent is a similarly enjoyable touch. I wonder what it might be—Elforyn (ivorite), perhaps? Or maybe even Juma?

The pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.

Ferndown Bark 4 Star Panel Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates

Les Wood and Dolly Wood began their careers in pipes working for Dunhill, with Les working in the silver mounting department, and Dolly working in the finishing department. While at Dunhill, both learned the fundamentals of making pipes, and after marrying and leaving the company, the two began to create pipes of their own. This ultimately led to the creation of L&JS Briars and the Ferndown make, widely considered to be the pinnacle of English handmade pipes. Ferndown pipes are highly coveted by pipe-smokers due to their superlative craftsman(and woman!)ship, whose bowls are oil-cured and which typically feature beautiful silverwork. Sadly, Les and Dolly retired from pipe-making in 2016, making Ferndown pipes rather scarce – especially given how difficult it is to get their owners to part with them.

Four-star pipes are particularly rare in Ferndown’s portfolio. While Les & Dolly did use a one- to four-star size grading system, the majority of the pipes they put out under the Ferndown name ranged from one to three. Given that these pipes were already much larger than the average British factory make—as was Les & Dolly’s preference—four-star Ferndowns are veritable mini-magnums, to borrow an old Dunhill term. While its length is a relatively modest six and a half inches, the pipe features an extraordinarily broad, paneled Dublin bowl, with a similarly wide and deep chamber. A mixed finish provides alternating facets of walnut-inflected flame grain and Ferndown’s signature “Bark” micro-rustication. The pipe is completed by a sterling collar from the master silversmith himself, along with a hand cut ebonite stem.

The condition is excellent. I was not sure if the pipe had been smoked, but if it has, it was smoked little, and with great care.

Tom Eltang for 4th Generation Smooth Arne w/ Horn Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

In the world of pipes, Tom Eltang needs no introduction. I will, however, give one anyway, if just as a reminder. Eltang made his first pipe from a Pipe-Dan hobby kit at the age of 11. At age 16, he apprenticed under the legendary Anne Julie, before moving on to work for Pipe-Dan three years later. Three years after that, Eltang began working for Stanwell. Through these formative experiences with major Danish pipe-making institutions, Eltang cultivated the skills and creativity that would see him emerge as one of the figureheads of Danish artisan pipe-making scene. In terms of influence, it is perhaps only Sixten Ivarsson who has had a comparable impact on the world of handmade pipes.

The Stokkebye family, who own one of Denmark’s most prominent to***co companies, have something of a tradition of enlisting contemporary masters make pipes for them under the Stokkebye name. Peter Stokkebye had pipes made, most famously, by Jorgen Larsen. Erik Stokkebye, Peter’s son, has pipes for his own “4th Generation” brand made by figures as diverse as Denmark’s Peder Jeppesen and Italy’s Ascorti family. And, in 2014, Erik Stokkebye began contracting other, highly regarded pipe-makers to craft a limited edition, Pipe of the Year series. The very first of these annual releases was created by none other than Tom Eltang, and was based on one of his signature shapes: the Arne Jacobsen. Jacobsen himself was a pioneer within Denmark’s functionalist school of architecture; Eltang’s Arne was influenced in part by the pipes that Jacobsen preferred to smoke, and in part by the functionalist design ethos. The result is a slender, lightweight Dublin shape, often with a ferrule of some kind—in this instance, horn. Only 50 of Eltang’s 2014 4th Generation Pipe of the Year models were ever made.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It also comes with its original wooden presentation box, leather sleeve, and certificate of authenticity.

Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Peterson’s “Tankard” shape debuted in the mid-1940s, and has been a recurrent addition to Peterson’s catalog in the decades since. This Tankard, however, is not the one that Peterson currently sells. The current iteration has a much straighter and wider stem, and is furthermore joined to the shank with a flush fit, rather than the army mount style featured here. So, what is this Peterson? Thankfully, Mark Irwin’s historical work over at Peterson Pipe Notes points to this particular Pete being an older iteration of the Tankard, with the exact year that the design change happened being 1997. I find it to be a more “old school” design that nicely reflects the aesthetics of Peterson’s early shapes. The fiery finish on this model is also just lovely.

MBSD Meerschaum Silver Reverse Calabash Brandy Block Meerschaum Pipe

The MBSD Meerschaum Silver is our new series of silver mounted meerschaum pipes. Using the same high-grade, fast-coloring Turkish meerschaum found on our Deluxe series, these pipes exclusively feature silver army mounts or spigot mounts.

It is often the case that you can’t beat the classics—but sometimes, you can add a little something extra to keep them interesting. For this MBSD Silver Meerschaum I figured a nice, plump, full bent brandy would be a nice design, especially with a good old sterling army mount. Where it breaks from convention, however, is in its thick shank, which houses a reverse calabash system. This should make the pipe an even cooler, drier smoker, something that will be even more handy when puffing away at nearly two inches of your favorite blend.

19th c. CPF Best Make Real Amber w/ Gold Filigree Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

The Colossus Pipe Factory, known by its initials C.P.F., is a make that is – as of yet – still a little shrouded in mystery. What is known is that the make was established in 1851 and that it was owned by Kaufman Bros & Bondy (later of Kaywoodie fame) by at least 1898. It is also understood that the make disappeared, and was therefore likely discontinued, at some point between the mid- to late-1910s, with the exact year still under debate.

Unraveling the history of these CPF pipes we’ve had in recently has been a blast. As I mentioned in a previous listing, I was able to find out – thanks to a small, ancient piece of paper tucked into one of the CPF pipes’ bowls – that the make was founded in 1851. This, coupled with the more extensive work done by Steve Laug and his interlocutors on the Reborn Pipes blog, allowed me to narrow down a relatively specific period in time when these pipes were made, starting 1851 and ending at some point between 1884 and 1898. After the 1884-1898 window, Kaufman Bros & Bondy absorbed CPF and the KBB emblem was added to CPF pipes, which neither this nor those previous ones show any trace of. This, therefore, is a guaranteed 19th century pipe, and certainly not a low-end one either. From its amber stem, to its (presumably electro-plated) gold filigree mountings, to its fitted clam-shell case, this CPF will have been intended to charm and to please.

This pipe is completely unsmoked. In fact, it still has its guarantee inside the bowl. As with other pipes of this vintage I’ve sold, I willl note that, for buyers, I would advise handling the pipe with more care than the average briar. Amber is a little more brittle than the ebonite or acrylic used for modern pipe stems, and the tenon on this one looks like it may be bone, which is more brittle than Delrin and the other tenon materials used today.

Sebastian Heck Squat Rhodesian w/ Elforyn Handmade Briar Pipe, New

While many Sebastian Heck pipes tend toward Scandinavian and post-Scandinavian styles, this one is decidedly more classical. Its squat composure reminds both of the iconic Dunhill O shape and of the bullcap prominently found in American makes in the early- to mid-20th century, while its tighter, more general proportions evoke the contemporaneous briars of Saint-Claude. The pipe’s Elforyn cap and ferrule similarly recall a time when ivory served to ornament not only pipes, but a whole class of luxuries. While the pipe’s contrast stain sandblast and cumberland stem represent more contemporary design elements, their presence is subtle enough not to interrupt its homage to the old world.

Savinelli Estella 803 EX Rusticated Lumberman Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates

It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.

The Estella is a genuine cult classic within the Savinelli catalog, one that is only more so for being briefly produced many decades ago. It was, as seen on this example, a rusticated line whose finish is somewhere between the granular approach of Castello’s Sea Rock and Caminetto’s “wax drip” New Dear lines. This one is an even more uncommon example of a “traditional” shape Estella—albeit an extra large (EX) one— taking the form of a Savinelli’s classic 803 lumberman.

The condition is very good. Some rim darkening and slight handling marks.
