First tasting of 2025 coming this Friday! We will be presenting our club wines for the first quarter AND we’ll be joined by the owner of East Coast Sweets, Annette, who has paired six chocolates to accompany our club wines. Aries’ monday paw selection - Pax The Bench Vineyard Syrah from the Clements Hills in Lodi California.

I think it’s fair to say Pax has become a bit of a cult Syrah producer in California since their launch in 2000. Their original focus was on cool climate Syrah made with a very minimalist approach and they have only further honed their craft in the past two decades, as well as expanding the list of unique varietals that they work with.

Their Bench Vineyard is sourced from a biodynamic vineyard in Lodi, 100% whole cluster fermented, and aged for only six months in large neutral oak.

Aries has great taste, this is a beautiful Syrah that is incredibly light on its feet. A nice red to transition into a week of warmer weather.

The agave spirits category has been steadily growing for the past several years. It actually outpaced our vodka sales by over 20% in 2024! And tequila has been at the forefront of that category for a long time. However, ever since 1977, for a product to be called tequila, it must be made from the Blue Weber Agave. And as there are over 250 species of agave, and 30 of which can be used to distill, tequila has struggled to find a lot of style variety in the market.

Mezcal has seen an incredible growth in popularity in these past couple of years and has so much variety to offer tequila lovers. Fruity, floral, spicy, funky, smokey, herbaceous, aged and unaged, and many coming from small artisanal families from a much larger diversity of climates jn Mexico than tequila (which is an actual town in Jalisco, and one of five states where tequila may be produced).

If you want to spice up your agave cocktail game you should consider giving mezcal a try. We have several different styles and are carving out room to feature even more in the future!

A new addition to the shop this week, and a suitable dram to have on hand when the weather inevitably turns colder again. We have long been fans of Kilchoman and have wanted to expand our representation with them for a while.

Kilchoman was founded by the Wills family in 2005 and was the first distillery built on Islay in over 120 years. They are a rare example of farmers AND distillers focusing on 100% Islay scorches. They farm their own grain, use traditional floor malting and maintain a barley to bottle mentality throughout the process.

One of their 2024 limited releases is Port Cask Matured Single Malt that went through its entire aging process in used ruby port barrels adding an incredible amount of depth and complexity to an already beautiful scotch.

Sláinte!

Dry January may be coming to a close but that doesn’t mean we stop supporting non-alcoholic alternatives. These are just a few of the new products we’ve brought in over last year. Non alcoholic options across every category continue to get better and better and we’re excited about how many options are becoming available. Whatever your reasons for seeking out N/A alternatives, we want to make sure that we have the best possible selections available. Cheers!

New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc has been riding high for years. It is a much loved wine with oceans of adoring fans - aromatic, tropical, refreshing, and easily accessible. And yet, I am ashamed to admit…I am not a fan. There has always been something I can’t quite put my finger on that has held me back from pledging my undying devotion. Finally, last week, when we least expected it, we were introduced to the Kiwi doppelgänger that I felt a duty to introduce all lovers of the grassy white to…we give you, cococciola.

A little know varietal grown almost exclusively in Abruzzo and Puglia in southern Italy. With less than 4,000 acres grown in the world this particular bottling comes from an Abruzzo cooperative with over 60 years of history. It is tropical, floral, bright, refreshing, and clean, it is somehow everything I have always wanted New Zealand Sauv Blanc to be. If you’ve been a long time fan of the southern hemisphere hero, we INSIST you give cococciola a try. You won’t regret it.

I arrived today to find this article from The Wall Street Journal that had been left on my desk by a customer. And I can’t tell you how happy it makes us to see someone writing about wine retail in this way.

Riley has told many customers over the years that any good wine shop should be like a good butcher store, the owners should know their products inside and out and they should also know their customers equally as well. But the more important part of retail, which is so fondly recalled by Lettie Teague in this article, is that of a place to come and interact, ask questions, feel like the most important person in the store, and be a part of a community. Delaware is increasingly unique as it does not allow alcohol to be shipped in or out of the state. But the greatest part of that, to us, is that we get to interact with all of customers, face to face, on a daily basis and curate a store and an environment that is as enjoyable to shop in as it is for us to operate.

And as all of you well know, the wildest party during the holidays is absolutely at your local wine store. Every year we welcome our customers back to Bin one last time for a New Years Eve Eve tasting of sparkling wine. And we look forward to welcoming you all into our home again this Monday for our final tasting of 2024.

Thank you for allowing us to serve you. We look forward to many more bottles of wine shared.

*NERD ALERT*
What an incredibly exciting vintage for Ridge Monte Bello Cabernet, primarily for what is seen in the second photo. Ridge Vineyards has an incredible history going back to the 1880’s but has secured its place in California wine history books because of the Stanford Engineers that restored the estate in the 1950s and 60s. Ridge has long been known for the extreme technical expertise in its wine making but also, its focus on sustainability and minimal intervention winemaking.

The Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon has been the apotheosis of the estate for decades, making a name for itself by placing 5th in the Tasting of Paris in 1976 and more impressively receiving first place in the 2006 30th Anniversary tasting from both the US and the UK judging panel.

But back to that second photo. For the 2021 vintage Ridge has taken their focus on sustainability to the next level by shipping their prized Cabernet in cardboard after years of packing it in wooden boxes, as is the standard for high end wines the world over. Their boxes, and the styrofoam packing, are recyclable and compostable and were given an award in the 2024 PACK Design Awards in the Non-Glass Category. And! They continue to use standard glass bottles instead of ultra heavy weight alternative often favored for ultra premium wines. Carbon footprint has been a big talking point in the wine industry for years and it is incredible seeing an icon like Ridge making a statement with a wine that has played a pivotal role in cementing the California wine industry as one of the best in the world.

Drink up! We only get a precious few bottles every year. There should be a place in every cellar for a piece of history like Ridge’s Monte Bello.

Another fantastic Cellar Masters event in the books. We had the great pleasure of hosting Molly Finnegan in The Library at Bluecoast to present an evening with Laurent Perrier champagnes. LP has an incredible 200+ year history and a long line of female leaders and innovators. It is a producer we have represented for a long time and a true honor to showcase two of their tete de cuvees, Grand Siecle. Nothing quite like sharing some sparkling wine for our last Masters event of the year. If you’d like to join the CM email list for future events please send us a message with your email or email us at [email protected]. We’ll see you at the next. Cheers!

Six out of ten from the Wine Spectator is pretty respectable. Are all the vintages correct? No. Are the producers and the wines still incredible? Of course. And these are all labels that we have represented for a long time. Are we tooting our own horn? Obviously. We’ve got pretty ok taste. Bin annual Top 10 release coming soon, be on the look out!

It’s Toys for Tots time! Our donation bin is up and lovingly wrapped this year. As always we are collecting raffle tickets for each gift donated and on Christmas Eve a winner will be drawn. The winning ticket will get a free personal tasting of 6 wines presented by Derrick and Riley for up to 10 people at a location and time of their choosing*. We are blown away every year by the generosity of our community and we can’t wait to help make some Christmas wishes come true again this holiday season!

*We ask for tasting dates not to fall between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Tastings can be held at a private residence, they can not be hosted at Bin 66 or a restaurant.

Seen here - the owners of Model Farm on a Model Farm with Model Farm. We had to, sorry. This was actually a photo taken from the incredible dinner they co-hosted with Sam Anderson of Ouro Wines for an Outstanding in the Field dinner recently, an incredible traveling dinner program that has hosted pop ups all over the country. And tomorrow you can find Model Farm being hosted at Bin 66 by owner Sean Castorani and Sam Anderson. Sean and Riley go way back and we are so thrilled to be show casing their wines this weekend. It’s going to be a fantastic tasting. You won’t want to miss this. Corks pop at 4!

Reminder that tomorrow is the last day to purchase some Dunham Three Legged Red to support Grass Roots Rescue for Adopt a Shelter Dog Month! Great wine for an even better cause. I don’t know that we could think of a better pairing than that.

If you weren’t already aware, October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month! And of course you already know perfectly well that we are dog people at Bin and huge advocates of animal rescue. To celebrate this month, we will be donating all profits from the sale of Three Legged Red from Dunham Cellars to Grass Roots Rescue. Dunham is an incredible Washington State producer who has been on our radar for a long time, and the story of their own three-legged rescue now has an extra special place in our hearts.

We’ll be pouring Three Legged Red alongside our new club wines this Friday, so feel free to come taste this wine and help us support an incredible dog rescue organization.
