Many trattorias in Italy offer house wine ('Vino della casa') by the half bottle ('Mezze bottiglie'). It’s often a fantastic and affordable option, served without the frills but full of flavor! House wines are a great way for restaurants to showcase local, lesser known grapes. Another great tip is to ask for a recommendation of which wine would pair best with the meal you're ordering - and this can be served by the glass, although if there are more than two in your party, it's probably worthwhile to just order a bottle!
