Another perfect pairing for summer grilling, on special this week: Val Sotillo's Finca Buenavista—available while supplies last, and then it's gone! 🇪🇸 Located in the Burgos region of Ribera del Duero, the vineyards of ValSotillo sit on 25 hectares (over 61 acres). The Tempranillo vines, grown in clay soils, average 40 years of age, many as old as 80 years, some over 100. The Finca Buenavista pours an intense purple color, emitting ripe, lush dark-berry fruit aromas that leap from the glass even before you lift it to your nose. On the palate, this wine is robust and broad with suave, mouth-coating tannins and rich fruit flavor, yet shows incredible elegance and freshness on the mid-palate. The finish is long-lasting and graced with hints of pipe to***co, spice and plum. It manages a gorgeous ripeness of fruit with a complementing soft texture while maintaining poise, transparency and vigor. On special now: a perfectly aged Riesling from a German Grand Cru vineyard 🇩🇪 The Ratzenberger family has tended their vines on the hills of Bacharach and Steeg for three generations. Located in the idyllic village of Bacharach, the estate is nestled right in the heart of Germany's Mittelrhein region. The vineyards of the Mittelrhein are steep, terraced and blessed with excellent sunshine, considering its northern latitude. The Rhine River protects these vineyards from strong winds and helps to regulate temperatures. The Ratzenberger vineyards are so steep they can only be tended by hand, "or sometimes with a winch, a cable, and a quick prayer to the gods!" writes Laurent. The result? In 2004, Jochen Ratzenberger made just a few, precious barrels of Spätlese Riesling from their Grand Cru vineyard, Wolfshöhle. It’s an incredible Riesling... dazzlingly aromatic, loaded with jasmine and petrol-tinged peach and apricot fruit. The wine is very fine — a whisper/almost ethereal — and layered with savory and secondary flavors that complement the fruit. The finish is classic Bacharach, tantalizingly slatey and mineral. This is a wine just entering the peak of its life; remarkably starting to hit its stride at a mere 20 years of age! Drink it all year long, or tuck it away in your cellar for the next 10 years. Pair with sausages, any type of seafood, spicy or exotic dishes or just a perfect, contemplative, after-dinner glass of wine. This is German vin de garde, don’t miss it!

Tasting notes:
Clos d'Albizzi's rosé is a beautiful 50/50 blend of Grenache and Cinsault. The Cassis rosé sits in the glass a bright salmon pink in color. Gorgeous aromas of tropical and stone fruits explode from the glass, marked with notes of citrus blossoms and crushed stone. On the palate, this rosé is ultra-refreshing. Flavors of white peach, cantaloupe and tangerine — energized by a vivacious acidity — envelop a fine mineral core. The saline-laced finish is crisp, vibrant and seemingly endless. The most vibrant fruit this side of Burgundy—on special through 6/13! 🌹 Inspired by a 6-month stage at Isole e Olena in Chianti Classico in the late ‘90s, a very young Alessandro Castellani returned home to Valpolicella with a unique vision of what Corvina-based wines could really be. As other producers replaced indigenous grapes with Merlot and Sangiovese while leaning ever more heavily into (ever heavier) Amarone, Alessandro heard the beat of a different drum. He believed that aromatically-driven, high-toned, fresh Valpolicella — without the influence of the apassimento method — could and should be the benchmark for a world-class producer of his region.⁠

At our in-store tasting earlier this month, Alessandro told me, “We aim for freshness and elegance instead of power and alcohol. I believe that Ca’ la Bionda is the only company in the last 20 years that has reduced their production of Amarone to dedicate entire parcels of vineyards for the production of a great first-choice Valpolicella.” Proof of Alessandro’s wisdom can be found in the newly released 2023 Valpolicella Classico, an aromatic dynamo, with a strikingly bright color of red roses and the crunchiest, most vibrant fruit this side of Burgundy. ⁠

Meet California's Shypoke Cellars 🌄 An estate vineyard located in the north-western corner of Napa Valley, their "dirt to bottle" history began in 1904, when Peter Heitz' great-grandparents immigrated from Alsace and literally planted roots and built "bonded winery #103" for the production of fine wines.

Through five generations of grape growers and winemakers, the Heitz family has continued the vision and efforts begun in 1904. Each wine honors the traditions of a family working together, to sustainably farm heirloom vines and to handcraft their fruit into uniquely elegant and honest wines that showcase a sense of place and vintage.

While Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay may be household names, California is home to over 100 different grape varietals! One such varietal is Charbono, which finds its origins in the Savoie region of France where it is known as Corbeau, or sometimes Charbonneau.

The grape is believed to have made its way to California — under the alias of "Barbera" — by way of Italian immigrants in the mid to late 1800s, around the same time as Cabernet and Chardonnay, but that is where the similarity ends. Compared to the nearly 200,000 combined acres of Chardonnay and Cabernet planted in California, Charbono has dwindled to a mere 75 acres!

Today, Charbono has become somewhat of a "cult" wine with a small, loyal following and has been staved from extinction by a handful of dedicated farmers, including Peter Heitz of Shypoke Cellars whose 12+ acres make up almost 20% of the world's remaining Charbono vines!

We're delighted to welcome Alessandro Castellani of Ca’ La Bionda in Valpolicella for his first visit to the Princeton Corkscrew, because his estate’s wines have been mainstays among our northern Italian selection for over a decade! 🇮🇹 Please join us at the shop on Saturday from 1-6 pm to meet Alessandro and enjoy a selection of fantastic Italian wines. ⁠

Their story: Ca' La Bionda is located in the commune of Marano di Valpolicella in the heart of the Classico zone of Valpolicella. Founded by Pietro Castellani in 1902, the estate is comprised of over 29 hectares of hillside vineyards at an altitude between 150 and 300 meters with east/southeast exposure. Today, Ca' La Bionda is in its fourth generation of family leadership with brothers Alessandro (winemaker) and Nicola (viticulturalist) at the helm. The soils of the vineyards are calcareous, composed primarily of marine sediment, which help give the wines a welcome freshness and verve. All grapes on their vineyards are grown organically — certified since 2016 — many on terraced vineyards, all of which are worked by hand.⁠

Laurent's Adventures in Bordeaux, Volume 1 🇫🇷 "As a part of a small global contingent of wine professionals, I was given an extraordinary tour of the stunning estate: a beautiful marriage between modernity, tradition and nature. Our tasting was led by Guillaume Pouthier, managing director and winemaker at the château. Guillaume was the perfect host: charming, charismatic and knowledgeable, captivating our entire party. We tasted through a sizable vertical of both of the estate's wines — each one just as great as the one before; no surprise, given Carmes Haut-Brion's place near the top of every Bordeaux list, year after year. The wines were focused, yet complex; powerful, yet soft and sensuous, all at the same time. The night concluded with a fabulous dinner on the top floor of their state-of-the-art winery, served by a Michelin-star chef. Overall, it was one of the best experiences in my life as a wine merchant!"

By the way––one of his favorites from the event is on special this week: the 2020 le C des Carmes Haut-Brion. He writes, "Le C is their second label, though the magic in this bottle far surpasses many estates' first label offerings. We can’t wait to welcome California winemaker Tyler Eck for Saturday’s free wine tasting at our Princeton shop! Drop in from 12-4 to sip delicious wines from a customer favorite. Here’s their story…

Dunites is a small wine company owned and managed by the husband-and-wife team of Tyler and Rachel Eck. This independent project is named after and inspired by a group of metropolitan refugees (a collection of free thinkers, artists, nudists and poets known as Dunites) from the 1930's who settled on the Oceano dunes of San Luis Obispo County, living as their own independent community and dreaming of a different way to be. Tyler and Rachel aim to produce transparent wines — wines that are fresh and vibrant with structures driven by acidity. The couple feel that San Luis Obispo’s mild, coastal climate is perfect suited for their style of winemaking: favoring grapes with ample acidity and moderate sugars, gentle extraction, whole cluster and native yeast fermentation, lees aging, low or no sulfur and no fining/filtration. These calling cards enable Dunites to craft some of the most remarkable wines in all of California.

Don't miss out: it's a last chance for an old-vine Rhône Cru from our friends at Tardiueu-Laurent, on special through 4/30!

Maison Tardieu-Laurent was founded in 1996 by Michel Tardieu and Dominique Laurent, though for many years the business has been the exclusive domaine of the Tardieu family. Today, it is run by Michel, his son, Bastien, and daughter, Camille. When Michel started the business, he would ask the growers he worked with two questions: whose wines they liked to drink from producers in the same appellation, and did they had some friends or producers with well-located, old vines who might be interested to work with him. The result is an enviable network of “partner vignerons” — farmers with whom the family has long-standing relationships, almost all of whom have enviable holdings of old vines in the Rhône’s most prestigious appellations. To this day, this word of mouth and handshake model is still how the family conducts their business.
