There is so much to love about this wine... It’s one of the finest expressions of white Bordeaux from the Pessac-Léognan region. White Bordeaux is one of the most shamefully underappreciated (and often undervalued) white wines in the world and you would be hard-pressed to find many examples better than Château Brown’s 2020 vintage. The exotic combination of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc fermented and aged in oak barrels produce wines of incredible depth, richness and tension that will please lovers of white Burgundy, but also fans of aromatic Sauvignon Blanc. This wine is perfect to drink now, yet has the complexity and structure to age gracefully and offer lots of pleasure years down the road.”

On special now: a modern white from Slovenia’s oldest winery! 🇸🇮 Laurent writes, “Ptujska Klet is the oldest and largest winery in Slovenia. Its cellars—which create an intricate labyrinth beneath the entire city of Ptuj—date to 1239 and house the city’s famous wine archive which possesses all vintages since 1946. During the 19th century, the cellar expanded with many bourgeois families adding their own to the existing underground structure. Today, the estate is comprised of over 300 hectares of vineyards grown in clayey-gravel and marl soils. The vines are planted on steeply-terraced slopes on both banks of the Drava river. Winemaker Bojan Kobal crafts exceptional varietal and blended wines from Welshriesling, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Yellow Muscat, Traminer, Furmint, Pinot Blanc, and Rizvanec for their whites and Pinot Noir, Blaufrankisch and Žametovka for their reds. A special offering from a Burgundy Superstar 🥂 Laurent writes, “Since I first started working with Agnès Paquet, her stunning reds and whites immediately became staples of our Burgundy selection at the shop. Though, in the beginning, we received just a case of Agnès off-the-charts sparkling wine: her Crémant de Bourgogne. She only produces a miniscule amount of this delicious wine, so our allotment wasn’t much at the start. Luckily, as our relationship developed and my persistence, I was able to steadily increase our allocation of all her wines, including her sensational Crémant.

This is just the second time I have been able to offer it as a special in time for your New Year’s celebrations. "No wine in this region is a better value, none period," declared Laurent about one of this week's wine specials, from historic Saint-Estèphe Château. He writes, "the village of Saint-Estèphe long ago was officially named Saint-Estèphe de Calon. Today, the Chateau Calon Ségur is a Third Growth classified cru, one of five in this village, though it was the first and oldest estate in the commune.

Le C de Calon Ségur is a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with a small portion of Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot. The wine is brooding and concentrated, opaque with a rich core. While swirling the glass, earthy aromas abound, but the wine is slightly introverted in a very enticing way. Mid-palate, the wine exhibits nuances of dark berry fruits with baking spices and a vibrant and fresh acidity. It is intense with a ripe, chiseled tannic structure, as well as an iron and graphite minerality. A solid classic for sure from an exceptional 2020 vintage, which can be drunk today (decant for at least an hour) or aged for a decade. I will surely put a case in my cellar."

This summer’s hit Chardonnay is BACK-IN-STOCK!!!🙌 is a 160 acre mountain estate stewarded by winemaker Martin Bernal-Hafner. Martin practices sustainable farming, preferably with regenerative and beyond-organic farming methods. Vineyards — planted in the late 1980’s — are high-density, featuring Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Chardonnay. These vineyards are a resilient ecosystem where diverse cover crops, compost and worm-casting extracts and sheep for mowing are all employed. Minimal organic spray, no-till farming and no herbicides are also utilized to help craft transparent, exquisitely balanced and age-worthy estate wines. The Alta Orsa line highlights the unique expressions of single vineyards, while the Orsa wines, like today’s Chardonnay, offer genuine representations of North Coast appellations.
