Pick of the Week:
Fanti "Poggio Torto" Super Tuscan
Toscana, Italy 2022

Regular price: $16
This week: $13 (through Mon., March 31st)

The Tenuta Fanti estate is located in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, on the southern side of the Toscana appellation. Their 123 acres of certified sustainable estate vineyards are fanned out within three kilometers of the winery, adjacent to the Carolingian Abbey of Saint Antimo. The various soil types are a mixture of schistous galestro and limestone alberese. Filippo Fanti and his daughter, Elisa, manage the 500 acre estate that has belonged to their family since the beginning of the eighteenth century. The name Poggio Torto (leaning hill) comes from the irregular shape of the hill that is in front of the winery.

This full-bodied wine is a Super Tuscan, a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah from young vines (7 to 15 years) rooted in varied soils. Intense purple red in color, the wine was fermented in stainless steel before aging for four months in oak barrels, half in 80 gallon barrels and the other half in very large 1,320 gallon barrels.

The wine has fresh, complex aromas with balsamic notes of eucalyptus, thyme and lemongrass leaves accompanied by ripe fruits such as black mulberry and sour cherry with notes of sweet spices and cloves. The well balanced, structured palate captures flavors of ripe blackberry, cherry, boysenberry with ample soft and sticky tannins that lead to a lovely herbal finish.

Pairs well with: grilled steak, pork chops, leg of lamb, osso bucco, veal chops, rich beef stews, pot roast with carrots, parsnips, onions and potatoes, pasta bolognese, mushroom lasagna, charcuterie platter, sausage or pepperoni pizza, grilled Portobello mushrooms, aged cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano Reggiano, Gouda, Goatsmilk Gouda.

Pick of the Week:
La Giustiniana 'Lugarara' Gavi di Gavi
Piedmonte, Italy 2023

Regular price: $22
This week: $18 (until Mon., March 24th)

La Giustiniana estate is perched in the hills surrounding the town of Gavi. The climate is more mediterranean, benefitting from constant maritime breezes unique to the southern Piedmont. The estate has nearly ninety-nine acres of vineyards planted in the Cortese white wine varietal with Guyot-trained vines. Cortese thrives in difficult soil, dry climate, and full sun exposure, which Rovereto di Gavi, a prestigious Grand Cru area of the appellation, amply provides. 'Lugarara’ is a single estate-owned vineyard in Rovereto di Gavi within the Gavi appellation. The estate produces three distinct vineyard expressions of this famous Piedmontese white wine with different sites, soils, geology, drainage and sun exposure.

This 100% Cortese white wine is lively with citrus, almond and herb aromas and flavors. Well-fruited, yet dry with bright acidity, this flavorful, balanced and elegant wine shows beautiful Cortese character.

Pairs well with: seafood, grilled shrimp, seafood or vegetable risotto, pasta with white clam sauce or primavera, fried, grilled or steamed fish, seafood linguine, grilled or stir-fry vegetables, asparagus, pesto pasta, light chicken or veal dishes, green salads. Aged cheeses such as Asiago or Pecorino-style sheep's milk or goat milk cheeses.

Pick of the Week:
Darms Lane 'Fortune 1621' Cabernet Sauvignon
Napa Valley, California 2021

Regular price: $29
This week: $24 (until Mon., March 17th)

Darms Lane is a family owned and operated boutique winery established in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley, south of Yountville, in 1983. It was known as Crichton Hall Vineyard. The Bump Family gained controlling interest of the estate in 2002 and the fourteen acres of original vines were replaced with the Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Today, Darms Lane produces around 3,900 cases of wine per year of their Fortune 1621. They also sell fruit to other fine Napa Valley producers such as Spottswoode and Venge Vineyards. The ship Fortune entered Plymouth Harbor on November 9, 1621 bringing the second wave of settlers, just one year after the Mayflower. An ancestor of the Bump Family, Edouard Bompasse, was one of thirty-five to disembark. This wine honors the family's lineage.

Fortune 1621 is a Bordeaux blend (aka Meritage in California) composed of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot. This medium to full-bodied wine has a bouquet of cherry and boysenberry red fruit with notes of oak, vanilla and flavors of ripe jammy cherry, blackberry, and chocolate/mocha as well as nicely balanced acidity and supple tannins.

Pairs well with: beef short ribs, filet mignon with sautéed mushrooms and potato leek squares, hearty stews, Beef Stroganoff, ahi tuna with black rice, roast lamb with sautéed spring vegetables, kung pao chicken, barbecue pulled pork sandwiches, bacon cheddar cheeseburger, duck breast, pork tenderloin, grilled asparagus, zucchini or portobello mushrooms. Aged cheeses such as Cabot Clothbound Cheddar, Comté, Gouda, Pecorino-style sheep's milk or goat milk cheeses.

Domaine Roc des Anges 'L'effet papillon'
Côtes Catalanes, France 2023

Regular price: $16
This week: $13 (until Mon., March 10th)

Talented winemaker, Majorie Gallet, has coaxed an elegant organic white wine from the challenging growing conditions of this region, which include: wind, heat, low moisture and poor soil. This excellent blend of 90% Grenache Blanc and 10% Macabeu comes from the iron-rich clay of Rivesaltes in the Roussillon, on a vein of quartz. The white soil hill, surrounded by black schist, is called Roc Blanc, hence the estate name 'Roc des Anges'.

The grapes are hand-harvested during the coolest part of the day to retain freshness. This delightful, white wine is dry, soft with minerality, aromas and flavors of jasmine, orange rind, fresh melon and peach.

Pairs well with: baked sea bass, baked halibut, shrimp tempura, spicy tapas, garlic chicken, Paella, Moroccan chicken tagine, roasted pork, salads, zucchini pie, vegetable linguine, squash, leek and Brie gratin, spring vegetable rolls, slightly spicy Asian or Indian fare, cheeses such as Brie, Camembert, Conté, Crème Fraiche, Gruyère, Emmentaler, or Jarlsberg.

Illahe Vineyards Pinot Noir
Willamette Valley, Oregon 2022

From a local Chinook word meaning earth/place, llahe Vineyards' goal is to make wine as naturally as possible from soil to bottle. They work on small lots with age-old techniques and materials. They do not use enzymes or additives and some of their wines are made without use of electricity or modern mechanization. The winery uses a gentle wooden basket press and their Pinot Noir is aged in French and Oregon oak barrels. Pick of the Week:
Gaintza Bodega 'Bixigu' Txalkoli
Getariako Txakolina, Spain 2023

Regular: $18
This week: $15 (until Mon., Feb. 24)

Four generations of the Lazkano family have been producing wine in the Basque region of Spain, commencing with José Antonio making wine at home for family consumption and to sell locally before establishing the Gaintza Bodega in 1923. The family now own nearly sixty-two acres of vineyards located on a hill with ocean views, a thirty minute drive west of San Sebastián, in Getaria, the capital of Getariako Txakolina, the first Txakoli appellation in 1989.

The Lazkano family are traditional producers, utilizing sustainable, low impact methods and are known as the fine wine pioneers in their region. Their vineyards are a mix of older plantings on high pergolas and newer, terraced plantings in clay and chalk soils over granite bedrock. Gaintza means 'gain' in Basque, refering to the estate's higher altitude above the town. Bixigu is the Spanish word for sea bream, a local delicacy.

This delightful light-bodied white wine is 100% Hondarrabi Zuri, a native varietal with enticing herb and floral aromas and intense flavors of fresh white fruits, especially apples. It has a characteristic balanced high acidity whch envelops the palate and offers a subtle salinity and lovely, slight effervescence from naturally occurring CO2 that remains post-fermentation.

Pairs well with: shellfish, steamed clams, grilled garlic shrimp, grilled oysters, Paella, pintxos (the traditional appetizers of the Basque Country: either a small slice of bread with a topping or a little skewered bite of secured with a cocktail stick such as an anchovy, olive and guindilla pepper or bacon-wrapped dates.); Manchego cheese, Spanish olives.

Pick of the Week:
Gulfi Nerojbleo Nero D'Avola Sicily, Italy 2021

Regular: $22
This week: $18 (until Mon., Feb. 17)

The Gulfi Winery is one of the top wine producers in Sicily with consistently top-rated wines. They are passionate about their native grapes and terroir and use biodynamic and organic farming methods. Nero D'Avola has seen a resurgence and is now the most important and widely planted grape in Sicily. The name which translates to "the black of Avola" refers to the dark, almost black color of the grape and the town of Avola on Sicily's southwestern coast where it originated.

Grown on a plateau on the Ibleian Mountains in Southeast Sicily in soils that are rich in clay with emerging limestone banks, the vine flourishes in hot relatively dry climates. Historically used by the Sicilians as a blending grape, since the early 2000's Nero D'Avola has become a varietal wine. The high tannins and moderate acidity make it comparable to a New World Shiraz.

This intense, full-bodied dry red wine is 100% Nero D'Avola. Elegant and harmonious this wine is fruit-forward with dark fruit flavors like cherries, blackberries and plum accented with hints of licorice and to***co. It pairs well with creamy tomato sauce dishes as the wine's tannins and acidity are balanced by the sauce.

Pairs well with: Margherita pizza, mushroom bacon burgers, beef stew, lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, tagliatelle with sausage, charcuterie, seafood with light sauces, grilled tuna steaks, gnocchi alla Sorentina, cod ravioli with tomato and basil sauce.

Dancing Crow Vineyards
Cabernet Sauvignon
Lake County, California 2021

Regular: $23
This week (until Mon 2/3): $19

Dancing Crow Cabernet Sauvignon is produced with grapes grown in Lake County's High Valley AVA where the 2,200 feet elevation, volcanic soils, hot days and cool nights yield sturdy, expressive fruit. Lake County abuts Napa County to the North. Bordeaux-style blending adds nuance to this ripe, big-scale Cabernet Sauvignon whose French oak aging imparts delicate, elegant spice, clove and toasted nut accents.

Deep red in hue, this full-bodied wine is 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Malbec and 5% Petit Verdot. Elegant, refined and beautifully balanced with great acidity and a healthy dose of tannin, it has aromas and flavors of plum, raspberry and black currants with notes of herbs, spices and vanilla. An outstanding vintage, this wine is delicious now and will age well for another three to five years.

Pairs well with: your favorite steak, barbecue ribs, beef pot roast, pork tenderloin, roast chicken, lamb burger, pizza with bell pepper and mushrooms, beef stew, vegetarian chili, mushroom risotto, eggplant parmesan, vegan enchiladas, mac and cheese, Swedish Meatballs, charcuterie, stuffed mushrooms, cheeses such as Cheddar, Gouda, blue cheese, Mahon, or Gruyère.

Pojer & Sandri 'Palai' Müller-Thurgau
Dolomite, Italy 2023

Regular: $20
This week (until Mon 1/27): $17

The Palai area near the village of San Michele All'Adige, in the Südtirol/ Alto Adige region of Northern Italy, has a concentration of Müller-Thurgau vineyards and a unique microclimate with a Southeast exposure and windy position due to the influence of the 'Ora', a wind that blows off nearby Lake Garda (a forty minute drive southwest along the Dolomite foothills). Given thousands of years of cyclical flooding of the Adige river in this narrow valley, the soil is on a porphyritic platform (volcanic) with layers of sandstone, marls (carbonate minerals, clay and silt), limestone and dolomite.

The image on the bottle's label, dated 1514, is by the renowned German Renaissance master painter and printmaker, Albrecht Dürer, who made several trips south to Venice over his career. More than any other Northern European artist he was engaged by the artistic and theoretical interests of Italy. It is known that he would carry completed drawings and etchings with him to use as a form of payment at inns where stayed during his travels. San Michele All'Adige is on the ancient Alpine trade route from Nuremberg (where Durer resided) to Verona, seventy miles to the southeast, on the way to Venice.

This white wine is 100% Müller-Thurgau, a crossing of the Riesling and Madeleine Royale varietals, created in 1882 by Dr. Hermann Müller of Thurgau, Germany. It has intense, complex aromas, flavors of stone fruit and citrusy notes of lemon. A lovely, balanced acidity with a clean finish on the palate. Best enjoyed as a young wine, through 2028.

Pairs well with: baked white fish, roasted poultry, roasted pork, creamy pastas and risottos, roasted vegetables, and spicy dishes such as vegetable tagine and braised Moroccan chicken, Paella, Pad Thai, Moules Frites, tuna poke, grilled oysters, arugula and goat cheese salad.

Vignerons de Buxy Pinot Noir “Buissonnier”
Côte Chalonnaise, Burgundy France 2022

Regular: $19
This week (until Mon 1/20): $16

Founded in 1931, the Cave des Vignerons de Buxy federates winegrowers around a simple yet ambitious joint project: ‘Obtaining the choicest wines’. Actively working together to promote the Côte Chalonnaise from vine to glass, the Vignerons de Buxy winegrowers have been tracing the same, undeviating path for nearly 90 years, guided by three fundamental values: people at the heart of the project, high-quality wines, and innovation and investment driven by sustainable development.”

This 100% Pinot Noir wine offers an impressive palette of aromas dominated by morello cherry, red fruits, then smoky and leather notes appear. Its structure has a beautiful balance and a well-melded tannin allowing it to be appreciated young, while ensuring easy aging.

Pairs well with: Meats cooked in sauce or grilled, such as a choice charolais filet, Beef Stroganoff, Coq au Vin, pork chops with sautéed mushrooms or pork tenderloin, charcuterie, stuffed mushrooms, sausage and onion pizza, mushroom pizza, white pizza, vegetable risotto, baked butternut squash, roasted Brussels sprouts, baked chicken, Cassoulet Toulousain, pesto crusted salmon, turkey club sandwich, Croque Monsieur, beet and goat cheese salad, asparagus wrapped with bacon, truffle mac and cheese, pâté, aged cheeses such as Gruyère, Gouda, Mimolette, Morbier, Muenster, Epoisses.
