Update on Mason (3-8-24)

Mason has settled in to a pretty comfortable spot since my last update. They have increased his fluids again and this seems to be a big factor in how he feels and in controlling his heart rate. The main priority at this point is to reduce the tightness in his muscles. He is so contracted that it’s difficult for him to move. They have slowly increased his muscle relaxer and yesterday he was injected with Botox. Hopefully relaxing his muscles will allow him to move and physically respond to commands. They are also switching up his stimulants slightly to see if this helps with his focus and agitation.

It’s a difficult thing to balance. He needs the muscle relaxers but too much will sedate him and make him drowsy. Stimulants will help counteract the drowsiness but too much will make him highly agitated. The difficult part for me is that I know he needs these medications but I often wonder what would happen if he was off all these meds. Is he over medicated? Under medicated? Given the wrong medications? It’s a trial and error process and unfortunately it seems we are running out of rehab time to figure this out.

His rehab sessions have been hit or miss. Some days he’s really with it and interacting well. Some days he seems very disconnected and uninterested. Yesterday he ate some peanut butter and he did pretty good with it. I imagine that would be the most difficult soft food to eat. He’s getting better at sipping water out of a cup. He is tracking and following at a pretty normal pace. He can move his head and eyes fast enough to keep up with people walking around the room or objects being tossed or rolled. His upper body strength does seem to be coming along. I have witnessed him trying to sit up on a few occasions. His weight is climbing back up as well. The lightest I have seen him was 128. He is now up to 144 and he looks much healthier.

He is tentatively scheduled to be discharged early next month. I have mixed emotions about this. I would love nothing more than to get him back home. However, I feel we haven’t maximized our time here because of all the tinkering with his meds, fluid levels, and agitation. I just don’t think he’s got a fair run at all the therapist have to offer here.

I thank you all for the continued love and support. It never gets old. I enjoy all the messages, comments, and inspiring verses that are shared daily. We will continue to pray and fight every day.

Update on Mason (2-22-24)

My last update was on the 11th and I didn’t have a lot of rehab progress to report. Unfortunately, I still don’t. This month has been very frustrating to say the least. He spent the majority of the week after his birthday dealing with stomach discomfort and issues. This led to the extreme bouts of high heart rate, shaking, and sweating. On Saturday, they placed an IV to provide continuous fluids due to all the sweating and dehydration. By Sunday afternoon, he was calm and his resting heart rate was back to normal. The IV was continued into Monday and then removed.

He had a great day of therapy on Monday. He looked like a different person. The highlight of the day was when he pushed a ball across the table to me. He was able to repeat this five times in a row. He had another good night of sleep and Tuesday was another good day of rehab. When I came in Wednesday morning and saw his resting heart rate was elevated I knew something was wrong.

After two good days, he was right back to the extreme discomfort and agitation. It got so bad that by the afternoon he had to be given Va**um to calm him down. It’s the first time they’ve had to use it in over a month. This wiped him out and canceled his afternoon sessions. Today, hasn’t been much better. They have put an IV back in and started continuous fluids again. They tested him for strep and a cold, he does have a slight cough, and both came back negative.

I apologize for the delay in updating, but I try to refrain from posting when I’m frustrated or angry and that has basically been my state of mind the last few weeks. I remain grateful for the opportunity to fight for my child. There are families that have lost loved ones that would trade places with me in a second. I remind myself of that daily. I also remind myself that God has ALWAYS came through for me and He has yet to let me down. So yes I am frustrated and I am praying angrier than ever, but I wake up every day determined to fight even harder. We are blessed to not be fighting this battle alone and I continue to ask for your prayers and support. Thank you so much for everything.

Cabinets have been installed!!!! Yaayyyy! Thank you all for your patience. On Thursday, Jan 11th we will have the power off for about an hour to move the registers to the new counters. Approximate time is between 8-9am.

01/08/2024

Attention!!!! Due to some unforeseen circumstances we will be closing the store from 12:30pm until approximately 5pm on Tuesday, Jan 9th for all unnecessary purchases. Fuel and to***co will be available. We are trying to limit the foot traffic inside the store so the cabinets can be installed as quickly and smoothly as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for understanding.

01/05/2024

Please bear with us for the next 2 -3 weeks while we do a little remodeling at the store. There will be some loud noises and some temporary setups while we prepare to install a new cigarette display, new cabinets and new countertops around the register area. Thanks, Tracy

Update 1.4.24 from Mason dad

The last week and a half have gone very well for Mason. Just about every day he has done something new. He has been able to eat ice cream and sherbet. He has on occasions been able to nod his head yes or no. He has been turning his head, scanning and taking in his surroundings. He is trying to vocalize when asked to but his vocal cords just don’t seem to be ready yet. He has grasped items and held on to them. Letting go is a different story, but that’s a problem for another day. Monday morning he had his trach removed. This has been huge as he seems so much more comfortable and his coughing has decreased greatly.

For me personally, Tuesday was a very emotional day. The therapist had him supported in a harness and they were walking him on the treadmill. There is one therapist on each side and they move his legs for him. The therapist on the right said, “I feel like he’s doing it on his own.” They removed the treadmill and they had him standing on the ground. They would move his left foot forward and he would slowly slide his right foot and move his leg forward. He took several steps in this manner. He was unable to duplicate this the next day, but he gave us another glimpse of what he’s capable of doing. Other than the day I was able to look into his eyes and actually see him looking back at me, this was favorite day since his injury.

As I type this, we are sitting here waiting for transport to take us to Children’s Hospital to continue with his rehabilitation. The rehab team here at Mercy have lived up to their reputation. The last week has actually been fun and exciting. His Physical Therapist, Nanami, has been incredible as she was a big reason I wanted to come back to Mercy after our first go around. She is absolutely fearless, aggressive, persistent, and patient. She challenged and pushed Mason to his limits and I’m certain he wouldn’t have had it any other way.

So please continue to pray and fight with us as we begin yet another chapter of his comeback.
Thanks for everything.

Update on Mason:

Update 11-17-23
It’s been another crazy week for Mason. It didn’t take long for the meningitis to clear. Tuesday would have been three days positive and he could have received a new shunt on that day. Thankfully, Dr. Nail wanted to wait one more day and put the shunt in on Wednesday. On Wednesday Mason’s white blood count increased. This caused her to delay the surgery two days. Thursday morning Mason became very sick. By Thursday afternoon his cranial fluid cultures grew and tested positive for a different infection. He had an MRI Friday morning to see if the fluid may have infected his cranial flap. Luckily it hasn’t yet because that would require two more big surgeries and a lengthy set back. Working with the Infectious Disease Department they have decided to be aggressive with the antibiotics to prevent the bacteria from reaching the flap. For now, we’re back to waiting and praying that the antibiotics kill off the bacteria before it reaches that part of his skull. It’s just another obstacle and hopefully he’s just getting them all out of the way now.
Thanks for your continued support.
