"Pepper’s Picks"- A Free Tasting every First Thursday of the month.

This week, Thursday 3/6/25 from 5pm to 7pm, come try these great wines:

2022 Long Shadows “Poet’s Leap” Dry Riesling
Columbia Valley, WA
A refined take on the Riesling varietal which showcases the complexity and versatility of this noble grape. Unlike the traditional off-dry style, the 2022 Poet’s Leap Dry Riesling is 100% barrel-fermented to full dryness (13.6% ABV) in an oval 360-gallon French oak cask. The use of a neutral wood tank helped heighten aromatics and develop a multi-layered texture. After fermentation, the wine remained on lees for four months to further develop flavors and complexity before bottling. Jasmine and slate aromatics with hints of guava extend the wine’s citrus and stone fruit flavors. Bright acidity provides a racy mouthfeel and contributes pleasant minerality to a long-lasting finish.

2021 Kracher Trocken Pinot Gris
Burgenland, Austria
Alois Kracher of Kracher Winery was one of the greatest visionaries in Austrian winemaking, being honored as the “Winemaker of the Year” by Britain’s highly regarded Wine Magazine seven separate times between 1994 and 2008. The 2021 Pinot Gris Trocken is predominantly aged in stainless steel for 18 months on the fine lees. The wine begins with pencil lead minerality on the nose and an intense and fruity bouquet with delicate spice notes. This is a light, leaner style of Pinot Gris with a stimulatingly saline character and a very dry finish.

*2021 Colli di Catone Frascati Superiore DOCG
Lazio, Italy
This unique white blend of 40% Malvasia Puntinata, 30% Trebbiano, and 30% Malvasia di Candia cropped at a fraction of permitted yields, is produced in the heart of Italy’s Lazio region and is vinified entirely in steel. Another organic and traditional wine, with all the hallmarks of a natural wine without arguably unnecessary extremes of a true ‘natty’ wine - this is why we champion so many of the wines of the “old world”. The wine is macerated on the skins for 4-5 days before fermentation with indigenous native yeasts (spontaneous fermentation). The wine is kept on its fine lees until bottling. The wine is soft, aromatic, and loaded with nutty flavors of yellow fruit, white flower petals, and crushed rocks. Antonio Pulcini’s estate was known for its wines at the time of the Roman Empire. He has quietly championed the ancient Malvasia Puntinata and Grechetto - varieties almost lost to the onslaught of Trebbiano and Malvasia di Candia. Pulcini prunes his vines to produce tiny crops to develop the concentrated fruit he believes is necessary for truly age-worthy wines. His top white, from the Colle Gaio vineyard, is allowed to slumber in the underground caves until Antonio deems it ready for his loyal customers.

2018 Kracher Zweigelt
Burgenland, Austria
This one is a lot of fun, a unique Austrian red that you don’t see a lot. Zweigelt, the most widely planted red wine grape in Austria, is a cross between St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch, sharing similarities with Pinot Noir in body and acidity levels but with more black fruits and exotic spices. Only about a century old, Zweigelt is a very young variety that has quickly risen to the top of Austrian red wines. “The 2018 Kracher Zweigelt Trocken is a very interesting wine that begins with a complex nose of wild red and black berries, exotic spices, and light florals. On the palate, loganberries and black currants combine with white pepper, hints of cardamom, white flowers, and liquid minerals. The fruit is lighter bodied, but with a firmer structure, giving it slightly a dusty mouthfeel. This is a very fun, unique wine that offers a lot of complexity.” 91 pts, Kevin Vogt, Master Sommelier

2023 McManis Family Vineyards Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon
Lodi, CA
McManis Family is unique for this price point; they are family owned and operated for 5 generations, they are Certified Sustainable, and all of the fruit going into the wine is estate-grown. Dark garnet in color with a bouquet full of blueberry, blackberry and black cherry notes and a hint of smoke. Medium-bodied on the palate with juicy black currant and black cherry flavors, it finishes with rounded, creamy tannins and a hint of mocha. 100% of the fruit for Cabernet Sauvignon came from Lodi. Aged in French and American Oak for 4-6 months. Great value!

*2020 Bodegas Olivares “Altos de la Hoya” Monastrell
Jumilla, Spain
The 2020 Monastrell “Altos de la Hoya” from Bodegas Olivares actually includes ten percent Garnacha in the blend. Monastrell, known in other parts of the world as Mataro or Mourvedre, is a dark, meaty wine that imparts blackberry and plum, along with black pepper, violet, and smoky notes. The wine is aged in French oak, in a combination of barriques and foudres, with only a very small percentage of the barrels new in any given vintage. This example comes in at 14.5% ABV, and delivers a deep and complex nose of cassis, black raspberries, smoky campfire, a touch of anise, cedar and spice. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a good juicy core of fruit, moderate tannins and a long, complex finish that closes with just a touch of raisiny fruit tones.

Valentine’s Special: A Wine and Chocolate Tasting Event!
Thursday 2/13/25 5p-7p
$10 per person, with $6 off any bottle purchased

When you think of romance, and Valentine’s Day, what related items come to mind? Roses, Chocolate, Fine Wine, Jewelry are the most iconic. It seems logical to put the chocolate and the wine together in the same experience, as we often do– but there’s an underlying issue that gets frequently ignored: it is very hard to get chocolate and wine to actually pair together. Why? There’s a rule in wine and food pairing: if the food has a sweetness factor, the sweetness of the wine must match or be greater than the sweetness of the food– or else the sweeter food can make the wine taste bitter or sour in comparison. Another factor is that both chocolate and red wines contain tannins, complex compounds that are astringent and bitter and create a drying sensation in the mouth– when combined, the effect is amplified.
What we’ve put together this week, are wine and chocolate pairings that should actually work. Sorry, we don’t have any necklaces or other jewelry to sell, and we don’t have roses either– but wait, we do! A dozen bottles of rosé wine would last a lot longer and make a much better gift than a dozen flowers, don’t you agree?!
Come join us this Thursday for a $10 wine and chocolate pairing experience, and find the perfect Valentine’s gift as well.

Lodali Moscato d’Asti D.O.C.G.
Piemonte, Italy | $21
Chocolate pairing: White
Yes, we’re aware that ‘white chocolate isn’t actually chocolate”. It’s still delicious. Lodali Moscato from Asti is a top quality example from an awesome Piemonte producer, with layers of honey, jasmine, beeswax and pairs very nicely with a lot of desserts, of course. The slight effervescence helps clear the palate of the buttery white chocolate. If not white chocolate, try it with cheesecake!

Cleto Chiarli Centenario Lambrusco di Modena DOC Amabile
Emilia-Romagna, Italy | $17
Chocolate pairing: Milk
The fruity raspberry notes of this effervescent wine pair well with the chocolate flavors, while the fizziness helps clear the palate. Cleto Chiarli Lambrusco is one of our top choices for food pairing, with a wide range of food, although our favorite with savory dishes is the ‘Lambrusco di Sorbara’ bottling we normally carry. This bottle of “Lambrusco di Grasparossa” is not quite as dry, and a deeper red color with more robust berry notes.

Joseph Drouhin Beaujolais-Villages
Beaujolais, France | $21
Chocolate pairing: Milk
There’s probably no better benchmark reference for affordable Beaujolais than Joseph Drouhin. This wine made from Gamay Noir in the southern region of greater Burgundy, exhibits a bit more fruity character than Pinot Noir, partially due to carbonic maceration. For our chocolate pairing, this is probably the closest thing there is to mimicking just eating a fresh raspberry. “A truly convivial wine. Owing to the careful blending of various terroirs, the result is a wine of great charm. It has a lovely raspberry color and a brilliant hue. The nose is both refined and intense, with notes of violet, peony and red fruit syrup. As you drink it, it feels fresh and silky. Both freshness and fruit remain for quite a long time on the palate.” -Veronique Boss-Drouhin

Gran Passione Rosso
Veneto, Italy | $15
Chocolate pairing: Dark
A romantic wine of great passion, indeed! A velvety, voluptuous blend. Merlot is blended with Corvina, the main component of Amarone wines from the Valpolicella region just outside of Venice. This “Baby Amarone” style encapsulates the charms of one of Italy’s most popular prestige wines. Made with the same labor and flavor-intensive appassimento method that produces benchmark $100+ bottlings of Amarone, the basic premise is to dry the grapes off the vines, intensifying sugars, aromas, flavors, and acidity. This intensity can only be matched by the darker, more serious levels of chocolate.

Quinta de la Rosa Ruby Port
Porto, Portugal | $21
Chocolate Pairing: Truffles
This is the quintessential wine that chocolate will always pair best with, a brandy-fortified port style wine. I opted for a ruby rather than a more ‘boozy’ and nutty Tawny port, to contrast better with the Sherry pairing at the end. The Ruby Reserve is fermented slightly longer to guarantee a dry finish, ensuring that the brandy is well incorporated. Young and vibrant with pretty red cherries and berries with a surprising body and long finish, this is a lighter style ruby that works perfectly, but careful, it’s 19.5% ABV.

Alvear Carlos VII Amontillado Sherry
Andalucia, Spain | $29
Chocolate pairing: Peanut Butter Cups
“The NV Amontillado style Carlos VII has a medium/dark color, notes of toffee, roasted nuts and coffee, but finishes dry with great acidity and penetrating almond flavors. This is pretty impressive and the Solera method wine that is the base of this cuvée is at least 15 years of age.” - Robert Parker
I’ve always heard that peanut butter cups and Sherry was a thing, but never tried it, so I’m excited to share the experience with you!

Did you ‘dry January?’ If so, you made it! You might be interested in easing back into alcohol with moderation in mind, and this week’s lineup is a great way to make that transition. Free Tasting this week: Exploring “Low and No” Wines
Thursday 2/6/25 5p-7p

“Low and No” (Low Alcohol/No Alcohol) isn’t just a catchphrase, and not just a fad either, it’s a trend that appears to be here to stay. It also dove-tails perfectly with wines that are considered “low-intervention”, that are healthier for not just the consumer but for the planet as well. The really great news is that the best quality wines of the world are already lower in alcohol, as a result of lower intervention in the process. Think of it this way, it is not like ‘diet’ food, expecting to sacrifice enjoyment for the sake of your health– low intervention wines are more like a ‘farmer’s market’—where you expect products to both taste better, and be better for you. It’s simply a matter of avoiding producers and regions known for taking shortcuts and focusing too much on lowering costs or maximizing efficiency.

Going beyond the low intervention/lower alcohol approach, if you want to enjoy the wine-drinking or wine-pairing lifestyle while remaining alcohol-free, no-alcohol wines are your answer. They are more typically “high-intervention’ wines, extensively processed to remove the alcohol from the wine which can be a bummer on both the flavor and texture of the wine itself. It’s difficult to find good examples, but we’re excited for the few we have, including the first wine of the lineup below:

Leitz “Eins Zwei Zero” Alcohol-Removed (Dry?) Riesling
Rheingau, Germany | $21
Low-Intervention?: NO
Alcohol Free: YES
Popular and straightforward non-alcoholic Riesling from Rheingau, the world-renowned growing region for Riesling grapes. Orange, rhubarb, and tarragon flavors. Charmingly versatile as a compliment to food. Clean and crisp with a dry finish. This one really surprised me, I didn’t strictly do a ‘dry January’ but I did truly enjoy drinking this while just cutting back and being a bit more conscious of my health this last month. It drinks somewhat closer to a dry Riesling vs. a typical Riesling, in my opinion.

2023 Naturalis Sauvignon Blanc
South Australia, Australia | $13
Low-Intervention?: YES
Alcohol Free: NO
Low-Alcohol: YES
The Angove family are one of the pioneers of the Australian wine industry, and now leading the way in Organics. Naturalis is their organic label, and every bottle is sealed knowing the wine is better for you, better for them and better for the environment. Bright and clear with olive green hues. Limes, guava, and passionfruit with delicate herbal edges. Lively and refreshing with abundant fresh fruit characters and a clean, fresh finish. “At no stage during the grape growing and winemaking of Naturalis Organic wines have we used any synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, fertilisers or inputs of any kind. Everything we use comes from nature, pure and clean. Certified Organic Wine, Sustainably Farmed, Vegan Friendly, and Minimal Preservatives.”
Sidenote: a single french fry can contain more sulfite-based preservatives than an entire bottle of wine! Most foods contain sulfites, so unless you have tons of food sensitivities, ‘sulfites’ are most likely not the 'culprit'.

Chateau Puech Redon "Apparente" Cinsault 2020
Languedoc, FR | $23
Low-Intervention: YES
Alcohol Free?: NO
Low-Alcohol: YES
You may have heard of Natural wine (or Raw wine), for which there is a loose actual definition but most wines referred to as a ‘natty’ wine are at the extreme end of the ‘low-intervention’ and ‘organic’ scale. A natural wine that is done correctly shouldn’t taste like a sour ale or a substitute for the red wine vinegar in your upper cabinet. This delicious wine is made from 85% Cinsault, 8% Mourvedre, and 7% Grenache from certified-organic estate vines just northwest of the ancient city of Nimes and just south of the Cévennes mountain range. All 52 hectares of vines are farmed organically. The three varieties are harvested at different times and thus vinified separately. Fermentation is spontaneous native yeast in concrete vats, then in March, the three grapes are blended and aged further in concrete, with no usage of SO2, bottled unfiltered and unfined. In the hands of Cyril Cuche and natural winemaking icon, Eric Texier, this is a pure, raw expression of the low tannin, high acid Cinsault grape. Ripe strawberry, stewed blueberry, lavender, spice, and lightly mossy notes, and will easily pair with any gamey dish.

2019 Chateau Maris “Les Planels” Syrah Blend
Minervois, FR - | $25
Low-Intervention: YES
Alcohol Free?: NO
Low-Alcohol: YES
Europe’s first “Certified B Corp” winery, also Demeter and EcoCert certified and one of the “top five most environmentally friendly wineries in the world”. As far as organics and low-intervention goes, this example is to the extremes. If you take the Chemin des Planels, you will walk along vertically-stepped dry stone walls. These walls, typical of La Livinière, serve to mitigate the erosive effects of water and maintain the soil on the terraces where the “Les Planels” Syrah grapes have been grown for over 35 years. Surrounded by pine trees, the vineyard receives ample exposure to the sun.. This vintage fully expresses the typical La Livinière terroir. Notes of thyme, rosemary, menthol, and a touch of lavender, this aromatic bouquet propels you into the heart of the vine. On the palate, some notes of sautéed black cherries, blackcurrant, licorice, pepper and cold meats. Dark purple color. Rich, full-bodied, yet elegant and seamless, with an impressive texture. An integrated acidity and a beautiful elegance, making you come back to the glass. Aging potential: 7-10 years. Grape Varieties: Syrah & Grenache (15% max).

2023 Heinz Eifel “Shine” Dornfelder Red
Rheinhessen, GER | $14
Low-Intervention: NO
Alcohol Free?: NO
Low-Alcohol: YES
From the banks of Rhein full of bountiful sunshine, this slightly-sweeter profile wine made from the Dornfelder grape is fun. It has a ‘grapey’ quality that is slightly reminiscent of Beaujolais. This isn’t cloyingly sweet, and not as sweet as most dessert wines, but certainly a great choice to drink slightly chilled, and although it’s not a low-intervention wine, this lower-alcohol option is still a healthier choice even with more residual sugar involved. Most ‘sweeter’ profile wines still contain less than 10g/L of sugar, which is extremely less sugar than most other food and drink products. A ‘coke’ contains over 100g/L!

Jan 2024 Cru Selections
1/16/25

SIlverado Vineyards “Borreo” Single-Vineyard Napa Zinfandel 2018 (PREMIUM)
Napa Valley, CA | $33 (NEW)
By the stats alone, looks to be a heavy-hitter of a Zin. Pricing online is all over the place, average price listed on wine-searcher.com of $49, another website selling it for $75 a bottle. I don’t think it’s worth that, but should be a great deal for the Cru anyways. The original release date of the 2018 vintage was in 2021, so it’s effectively been cellared for the past 3 years. Strangely enough, there’s not a lot of info available about this one, but it’s 100% Zinfandel, aged 14 months in French oak, 10% new with the other 90% only one-time use. Alcohol: 15.2%, expect spicy cola notes with a big midpalate of fig, ripe blackberry and pepper notes with a vanilla oak finish. The vineyard sits on the Borreo Ranch property that was founded by Felix Borreo, an Italian immigrant and Napa grocer who built a stone and redwood winery on the property in 1888.

Silverado Vineyards “Borreo” Single-Vineyard Napa Sangiovese 2018
Napa Valley, CA | $29 (NEW)
This wine is a great deal as a regular pick, at $29 retail value. I’m excited to have one of these Napa Sangioveses, a trend that started back in the 1980’s called the ‘Cal-Ital’ movement. I may have told this story to some of you, but my favorite wine I ever had was a 1994 vintage of Clos du Val Sangiovese out of Napa, that a friend of mine opened at his house sometime around 2004. At this point, it’s not the best wine I’ve ever had, or the most expensive, by far– but in everyone’s wine journey, there seems to be a wine that is an ‘ah-ha!’ moment, that sets your brain afire– something that you can’t describe because your palate is trying to form new neural pathways in your brain to make sense of the new sensory experience. Expect lighter crunchy red fruit aromas with some tomato leaf, giving way to delicate and succulent notes that offer a mix of bright fruit against a leathery texture, followed by a hint of blueberry pie with lots of tension and a touch of earthy tannins on the finish.

Chateau Puech Redon "Apparente" Cinsault 2020
Languedoc, FR | $23 (NEW)
A real unique and nerdy wine for the Cru, a ‘natty’ wine that is done correctly without tasting like a sour ale or a substitute for the red wine vinegar in your upper cabinet.

Rio Madre Graciano 2021
Rioja, Spain | $15
Graciano has been best known as a blending grape used in Rioja to add color, depth and perfume to Tempranillo. It also thrives in the nearby region of Navarra and a few dedicated winemakers in California and Australia are making single varietal bottlings. Graciano’s black fruit and lush tannins make it a perfect pairing to grilled or smoked red meat, as well as game. Rio Madre Graciano shows the most jovial, tasty and fruity character of the variety. It is the result of the efforts of Jorge Ordóñez and Bodegas Ilurce to produce a 100% Graciano wine from D.O.C. Rioja. Very dark on the nose, with lots of raw spices, charcoal and some green peppercorns on top of the blackberries. Very full-bodied and spicy, with fine grain tannins. All of Jorge Ordonez wines are organic and dry-farmed.

Firestone Vineyard Red Blend 2017
Paso Robles, CA | $17
I was intrigued by the blend, the source, and especially the fact that it’s got some age on it, being a 2017 vintage. The 2017 is composed of 62% Petite Sirah, 20% Zinfandel, 12% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Syrah. The Petite Sirah adds a hearty base of rich roasted plum with hints of blueberry while the Zinfandel and Merlot contribute lush preservative-like fruit characters. The Petit Verdot and Syrah add a hint of spice on the silky finish. Pair this versatile wine with anything from pasta and pizza to seafood, red meat or dessert.

Firestone Vineyard Pinot Noir 2019
Santa Barbara County, CA | $17
Another deal this month from Firestone, founded in the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara county in 1972. The valley enjoys great diurnal shift, up to 50 degrees difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures, which is great for developing both ripeness and acidity within the grape. This light, easy-drinking Pinot Noir displaying classic raspberry, rhubarb and strawberry notes with a balanced finish.

Mont Gravet GSM 2023
Southern France | $10 (VALUE pick, get 2 for 1)
Deep ruby in color with a hint of purple. Intense aromas of ripe red and black fruits, followed by notes of earth and spice. A hint of cloves and pepper. The wine is very well structured, with a perfect balance of elegance and ripe and silky tannins. An unbelievable value, our favorite “cheap red”!

Schug Sonoma Coast Sauvignon Blanc 2021
Sonoma Coast, CA | $23 (NEW)
This well-balanced Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from cool-climate vineyards in the southern end of the Sonoma Coast AVA. The Grossi vineyard north of Petaluma contributes spice and bright, tangy acidity. The Leveroni vineyard south of Sonoma adds the unique floral character of the Sauvignon “musqué” clone. The resulting blend has a bouquet of lemon and grapefruit zest, leading to lush fruit flavors of white peach, passion fruit, and honeydew melon. It finishes with a refreshing minerality and vibrant acidity. 91 points, James Suckling.

Chateau Ste. Michelle “Eroica” Riesling 2022
Ancient Lakes and Yakima Valley, WA | $22
Launched in 1999, Eroica is a labor of love for two of the world’s great Riesling producers - one from the Old World, Ernie Loosen of the Loosen estate of Germany, and the other from the New World, Chateau Ste. Michelle of Washington state. Eroica is named for Beethoven’s Third Symphony. To protect flavor intensity, grapes were harvested at night when the vineyard temperatures were coldest. Berries went direct to press, avoiding the possible loss of freshness caused by a crusher / destemmer. A cool fermentation for 3 weeks with fruit-driven yeasts created a seamless integration of fruit, sugar and acid to heighten fruit flavors. 100% Riesling, 12.0% ABV, pH 2.90.

Joel Gott Central Coast Rosé 2022
Central Coast, CA | $15
For a large ‘mass market’ California producer, Joel Gott isn’t bad, it’s a good go-to grocery brand if you can’t find something more unique. This rosé was a deal for us most likely because of the vintage year, but it’s still drinking well and it’s an interesting mix: 76% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, 5% Carignan, 2% Albarino, 1% Counoise, 1% Cinsault. Get some extra bank for your buck for a great party wine, porch pounder, or maybe just pour over ice with some soda water, a splash of white vermouth and an orange peel for a nice holiday ‘low ABV’ cocktail.

Charles de Fere “Jean Louis” Blanc de Blancs
Tardenois, France - $13
Jean-Louis Denois, a sixth-generation Champenois, established his own operation in 1981 at Fere-en-Tardenois, just twenty miles outside of Champagne. Their Blanc de Blancs Reserve is produced methode traditionnelle and aged for a year in bottle before disgorgement. A perfect aperitif, with notes of green apple, lemon, apricot and pastry. Inventory is limited, so you can also choose the V***e de Vernay Classique Brut (black label bottle) from previous month’s tastings, if you think you like it over the de Fere.
