“Old World French and Italians - some Value, and some Luxury!”
Hosted by Sarah Hurley, Touton Selections
The “Value” wines:
M. Touton “Brut de Peche” Sparking NV
France - $15
Castellani Pinot Grigio 2023
Sicily, Italy - $14
Castellani Sangiovese 2019
Tuscany, Italy - $17
The “Luxury”:
Arnoux & Fils “Vieux Clocher” Gigondas 2020
Rhone Valley, France - $28
A solid selection for Chateauneuf-du-Pape lovers, Gigondas AOC brings a lot of value for the price. A blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre. Good to drink now, but will improve with age to 2030+. This wine is harvested from rocky soils with large pebbles and red clay. It undergoes traditional vinification with partially destemmed grapes. It is then aged in large oak barrels for 6-12 months, resulting in a wine deep purple in color, an elegant Gigondas with a complex nose of red fruit followed by a palate of black fruits, and slight tannin.
Tenuta di Ceppaiano “Keith Haring” Super-Tuscan Rosso 2017
Tuscany, Italy - $25
Future winemaker Piergiorgio Castellani was just a student in NYC, passionate about art, and befriended an up-and-coming artist named Keith Haring. The two hit it off, and in no time started working on an idea that would become the famed "Tuttomondo" mural in Pisa. Haring gifted to his friend a wine label of his own design to commemorate their work together. Years later, the Castellani family developed this commemorative cuvee to honor Haring and their unique friendship—a complex blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Notes of wild rose, dark cherry, mint, cassis, and licorice are backed by warm notes of vanilla, cedar and spice. A perfect match for pasta and spicy Mediterranean fare. A portion of sales proceeds go to support the work of the Keith Haring Foundation.
Terre del Barolo Riserva 2016
Piedmont, Italy - $35
The ‘king’ of Northern Italian wines. The Terre del Barolo wine cooperative has been a favorite for years. For less than what other ordinary Barolos sell, you can have a Riserva. Using only the best Nebbiolo grapes from the best spots, Riserva Barolos are required to have five years of aging (instead of the usual three) and are meticulously cared-for to insure their exceptional quality. Rich, blackberry, plum, and dark cherry, to savory notes of to***co and chocolate, this wine is sure to impress.
