Ugh, I was supposed to have a class running tonight and I got so distracted and anxious with traveling mishaps (our daily driver is currently stuck in my sister’s driveway in Utah, super fun!) and with the election I just can’t do it. I didn’t promote it properly and I’m sorry. I hope you all have gotten out your vote though!

🚨 TL;DR: IT’S MY BIRTHDAY WE ARE CLOSED TODAY TUESDAY AUGUST 27TH!!! Love you bye🚨

Hi! If you don’t know me, I’m Sarahjane, and I’m the proprietor of Bay-Made. I’m an artist and illustrator myself, and running Bay-Made is my absolute honor. It’s my birthday: I’m 34 today! And I’m taking the day off to spend it with my best friend so we’ll be closed, but I just want to take a moment and say just how grateful I am for my friends, family, and community. (Also quick shoutout to my birthday twin !!)

This last year has simultaneously been one of the best and worst of my life, a juxtaposition which honestly broke my brain a little. All while some of the most horrific things happened on the world stage, I moved, which improved my life drastically; suffered from depression after years of burnout and world weariness; which degraded my life drastically. I lost several uncles to sickness, but became an aunt for the tenth time over and ALSO became a great-aunt for the first time. I learned to stick my fingers in the soil, and I adopted a dog who turned out to be more mentally ill than myself, which has given me much-needed intention in my life. I started making art and writing again for the sake of making art again, and worked through one of the biggest art blocks of my entire career.

I’ve lived my life this last year just one day at a time, one cup of peppermint tea with honey and half and half at a time, and I can say coming out on the other side: life is better. Life is richer.

I’m so grateful for those in my life that have reached out, been there for me and kept me grounded. I’m grateful for the sun on my face and my scruffy little dog and my 3 perfect cats, getting to be surrounded by art and make art every day, and to be seen so truly and loved. May this next year be a continuation of this gratitude, to show up for every day being grateful to experience it. Much love!

Closed Thursday 7/18. Depression sucks. I’m doing so much better than back in October but I still have bad days, though far fewer. July, while always nostalgic, drags up a lot of bad memories and feelings along with the good. I’m sorry I can’t open today but know my heart bursts with love for this community of artists and those that support them. Eternally grateful. Back tomorrow.

We have a guest dog at the shop named Frank, and he actually wants to meet you, unlike Ginger, lol. I’m dog sitting for a couple weeks for some pals so if you need a dog fix along with your cat fix, come say hi. He’s a good boy and I’m hoping his chill demeanor helps socialize Ginger even more. Also, I love that his belly band looks like a Carhartt tool belt 🤣

Weird experience! Had someone apply to have their product in our store that used AI for all the art. AI I don’t think is inherently evil. I know it is being used for exciting things in the medical field, for instance. However, artists are tradespeople. You can’t use AI to have a meal cooked for you, or fix your toilet, or wire your home. You either do it yourself or you pay someone to do it for you. Art should be accessible, but working with an artist costs money. A lot of money, for a big project like this one was. Ideating with AI, ok, whatever. Taking this product beyond ideation and selling it commercially? Hire an artist, period. Everything that is beautiful around us outside of nature itself was made by a creative person. Don’t devalue what we do, and definitely question the use of AI in what you consume and buy. Much love! 💗
