Wine aging vessels play a pivotal role in shaping the character and complexity of the final product. From traditional oak barrels to modern materials like concrete and stainless steel, to throwbacks like clay amphorae, each vessel imparts unique characteristics to the wine. We break down the difference between each option in our latest Sur le Zinc blog post.

At the heart of the Henry Marionnet estate is a plot of undrafted, pre-Phylloxera vines that are thought to date back as far as the 1820s. Today's blog explores the ramifications of the Phylloxera epidemic and explores the Marionnet's commitment to saving and developing heritage varietals, thus ensuring their legacy will be carried on for generations to come.

Perhaps the most seismic shift in the modern wine world took place over 150 years ago. In the 1860s, vigneron in the Rhône began to see their vineyards die off for no discernable reason. The condit…

Welcome to Alsace, a region in northeastern France known for its breathtaking landscapes and exceptional wines 🍷 Nestled between the Vosges Mountains and the Rhine River, Alsace boasts a unique microclimate that shapes its distinct terroir. The region's diverse soils, combined with a range of grape varieties, make for an exciting wine journey. We're proud that Domaine Mann – Vignoble des 3 Terres, an Alsatian producer that represents the best of the region, is a part of the Martine's Wines portfolio. Reach much more about the (very nerdy) specifics of what makes this estate special in our latest blog post.

Located in the northeastern corner of France, neighboring Germany, Alsace has a winemaking history that dates back centuries. Key to this region’s uniqueness is its position between the Vosges and …

Thanks to Matt Walls for publishing a retrospective of Domaine Bernard Burgaud's Côte-Rôties in Decanter. It was fascinating to read about the evolution of the wines, of which vintages dated from 2008 back to 1988. Walls praises the wines' longevity, citing a number of factors, including destemming, a brief maceration, the limited use of new oak, favorable terroir, and, of course, the weather conditions of the vintage.

What is the key to Côte-Rôtie's longevity? Matt Walls ponders this question while tasting 11 vintages spanning 30 years from Domaine Burgaud.

This month's featured wine is the Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas Rouge Clos Derrière Vieille. The vineyards are located along the northern side of the Dentelles de Montmirail and benefit from the cool terroir that allows for slow ripening, yielding fresh, complex fruit. Clos Derrière Vieille borders the village of Gigondas, and its 3.42 hectares of calcareous marly soils were planted in the early 1990s via selection massale. The plot is naturally fenced by woods.

This month's featured wine is a stellar Beaujolais that over-delivers on every level. The Domaine Paul Janin et Fils Moulin-à-Vent Heritage du Tremblay is made from old vines grown in the parcels of Les Burdelines and Les Greneriers, located in Romanèche-Thorins. All farming is organic and the wine is vinified with minuscule amounts of SO2. It's structured and complex – the perfect accompaniment to your holiday table.

The story of Paul Janin et Fils is that of cru Moulin-a-Vent – this reference-point estate has been growing Gamay here for over a century. The Janins are champions of this appellation, elevating its status through the steady creation of handcrafted wines. Practicing sustainable and organic methods for decades, the estate has recently applied for full certification, which they will receive in 2024. Work in the cellar is traditional, with long macerations and tank aging. With the fifth generation of Janins poised to join the family business, this is a Beaujolais estate that celebrates its heritage.

Our inaugural wine of the month is the 2018 Niepoort Lagar de Baixo Tinto. Though Niepoort was founded as a Port house, over the past 30+ years, the estate has expanded into crafting dry wines from prime locations across Portugal. The Lagar de Baixo is from the up-and-coming Bairrada region and is made from its signature red grape, Baga.

Dirk Niepoort, the fifth generation of the family and the one who spearheaded the house’s development of dry wines, has long had an interest in the Baga variety and the fantastic terroir of Bairrada. In 2012, with the acquisition of Quinta de Baixo, he jumped in with both feet and has since been crafting wines like the Lagar de Baixo. In this bottling, he showcases the expressive nature of Baga by using minimal extraction and fermentation In lagares and stainless steel with carbonic maceration. Aging takes place in old barrels and freshness and elegance are the hallmarks here. This crushable red is medium-bodied, bright, and red-fruited.
