Brand: Yagua
Size: Toro (6” x 54)
Factory: J.C. Newman PENSA
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
The Yagua is another cigar from Drew Newman, J.C. Newman’s fourth generation.
At our J.C. Newman PENSA factory in Nicaragua, Drew heard of an old style of rolling ci**rs from the factory’s general manager, Lazaro Lopez. Lopez runs the operation down at PENSA and his grandfather used to bundle ci**rs uniquely in 1940’s Cuba. He would bind the finished ci**rs together without any molds or presses. Rather, he would use leaves from the Yagua, a Cuban royal palm tree, to give these ci**rs a shape.
The ci**rs are rolled a little more wet than usual and once the humidity stabilizes, they take the shape of the other ci**rs inside the leaf. Every Yagua will have a slightly different shape. Packaged in a crate style box, these really give off an antique and rural appearance. A U.S.A. Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper incases Nicaraguan binder and filler to***cos. Just like the J.C. Newman Cigar, The American, there is nothing else in the industry like it.

It’s called Paladin de Saka; it’s the newest cigar from Steve Saka and the latest that is described as what happens when his company uses the best of the best materials. That lineage starts with Sin Compromiso, a cigar whose name translates to without compromise. The idea behind that brand is that it uses a blend that Saka says is made without concern for price or other constraints.

Paladin de Saka is a further refinement of that concept, in that Saka says this cigar uses the best of the materials that are selected for Sin Compromiso, i.e. taking the cream of the somewhat literal crops. Paladin de Saka is a 7 x 50 Churchill that mostly uses the same to***co varietals as Sin Compromiso: a Mexican San Andrés negro “cultivo tonto” wrapper over an Ecuadorian hybrid habano binder and fillers from Nicaragua. The one difference between this and Sin Compromiso is that Paladin de Saka uses Pennsylvania ligero in the filler. One other difference is that Paladin de Saka uses a regular box press instead of the soft press found on Sin Compromiso.

“Cultivo Tonto” refers to a unique growing method, inspired by how farmers in Japan grow certain fruit. Farmers remove the plant’s lower leaves so that the maximum amount of nutrients can be sent to the upper leaves. Because of this, the yields of these plants are lower and the price for the to***co is much higher.

Saka previously described the cigar as “a touch more robust” than the regular Sin Compromiso.

Like something from a Joseph Conrad novel, the newest version of CAO Amazon Basin features a Brazilian to***co that’s grown in the Amazon rain forest and transported by boat down the Amazon River before it’s blended into this limited-edition cigar.

The tropical to***co is called Bragança and its methods for cultivation are quite unorthodox. According to brand owner Scandinavian To***co Group, seedlings for Bragança are planted in the soil a full yard apart from each other, resulting in half the yield of other to***co crops. Once culled, the leaves are packed tightly into tubes called carottes (similar to the condensed cylinders of andullo) where the to***co undergoes a six-month fermentation. The carottes of to***co are then loaded into a canoe and paddled out of the jungle on the Amazon River, eventually completing its journey from the heart of darkness to the STG Estelí factory in Nicaragua, where CAO ci**rs are produced.

CAO Amazon Basin
The image of to***co in a canoe gliding along the Amazon River certainly gives this release a literary air, but STG believes that the Bragança in the filler truly brings an exotic note to the cigar. At 6 inches by 52 ring gauge, CAO Amazon Basin is composed of a dark Ecuador Sumatra wrapper, Nicaraguan binder and a filler blend of Colombian and Dominican to***co that accentuates the Brazilian Bragança.

Another distinctive trait quite unique to the CAO Amazon Basin brand is the rope-like to***co tied around each cigar serving as its band. These tropical toros started shipping last week in rustic, primitive-looking boxes of 18, and retail for $12.99 per cigar. Only 6,000 boxes have been made for the U.S. market.

This isn’t the first time that STG has used unusual to***cos for its CAO brands. Releases like CAO Orellana and CAO Fuma Em Corda are extensions of the Amazon Basin series, which started in 2014.

It’s not as if the Oliva Serie V Melanio needed improvement. With its Sumatra-seed wrapper and bold blend of Nicaraguan to***co, the cigar was already a complex smoke that was both critically and commercially successful. This didn’t stop Oliva from taking it to the next level, which it did when it came out with the same cigar in a maduro version. Changing the Sumatra wrapper to a dark leaf of Mexican San Andrés turned an already extraordinary cigar into an absolute blockbuster.

The Oliva Serie V Melanio Maduro Churchill is powered by its core of Nicaraguan to***co but the Mexican cover leaf adds a new dimension resulting in a complete work of balance and substance.

The cigar is made in Nicaragua at Oliva’s Tabolisa factory and shows a luxurious procession of rich, regal character starting with notes of German chocolate cake that segue into a smoke of baking spices, malted chocolate and lively, cedary accents. Polished and precise, the large Churchill is a bit of a commitment, but we urge you to take that time.

Since purchasing the company in 2016, Belgian owner J. Cortès has proven to be a worthy, respectful steward of the brand, maintaining the high standards that continue to put Oliva on the Top 25 list year after year.

As a sentimental nod to the past, Casa Cuba evokes the early era in Arturo Fuente Cigar Co.’s timeline when the family was producing ci**rs with Cuban to***co on the back porch of their home in Tampa. That’s the memory of the late Carlos Fuente Sr., the second-generation Fuente cigarmaker. And this was the idea behind Casa Cuba, which was the last blend he created before his death in 2016.

A few things have changed since those humble days in Tampa. Fuente has established a handmade cigar empire and now operates out of the Dominican Republic where Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia. produces more than 30 million ci**rs a year. The patriarch is now Carlos “Carlito” Fuente Jr., who runs the company with limitless energy. But while Carlito was busy with brands like the Fuente Fuente OpusX and Rosado Sungrown Magnum R, his father wanted to return to a cigar that reflected the elegance of simplicity. “Traditional” is a word that’s often used to describe Casa Cuba, as it stresses balance over strength.

The names in the line are a reference to the Cuban game of dominoes, and the Doble Cuatro tempers each subtle, spicy note with sweet intonations of molasses and licorice. It’s a bow to the past as Carlos Fuente Sr. saw it, and a lovely cigar no matter your family history.

Along with excellence and distinction, consistency has always been heavily weighed when we create our annual Top 25 rankings. And no cigar company has been as consistent as Padrón. It was the first manufacturer to be named Cigar of the Year for 2004 when we started publishing this awards list, and now, 17 years later, Padrón has produced the No. 1 cigar of 2021. This is the fourth time for Padrón to be named Cigar of the Year, making this family-owned business the record holder. Furthermore, Padrón has now occupied a place in the top five every year but one, for a total of 16 times.

The Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series was released in 1994 when the company celebrated 30 years in business. The cigar was made by company founder (and Cuban émigré) José Orlando Padrón and his son Jorge. The idea was to make a high-end cigar from exceptional to***cos with more age. Before 1994, Padrón’s production was mostly made up of its flagship brown-label brand. It was a good cigar at a good price—and still is—but a creation for an anniversary as big as 30 years had to be taken to the next level. The final product was a cigar of sun-grown, Cuban-seed to***cos from Nicaragua. It was José’s idea to give the ci**rs the signature box-pressing. He wanted a smoke that resembled the ci**rs he used to enjoy in Cuba. “Not that we invented the box-press,” said Jorge Padrón, “but at the time there weren’t any box-pressed ci**rs in the market.”

That presentation eventually changed the landscape of the premium industry. The 1964 Anniversary Series was an enormous commercial and critical success, inspiring other companies to follow suit and box-press their ci**rs as well. Today, box-pressed and trunk-pressed ci**rs are commonplace in the market.

From the Family Reserve to the Serie 1926, Padrón’s brands have been a mainstay on every Top 25 list this magazine has ever released, but this is the first time a cigar from the 1964 Anniversary Series has been named Cigar of the Year. The Torpedo serves as a fine example of everything the Padróns wanted to achieve. Box-pressed and attractive, it starts with a woody, nutty core that gradually becomes more complex. Notes of hazelnut are uncannily precise and segue into a rich, opulent smoke of cocoa bean that settles onto the palate like the fine confections of a chocolatier. The draw and burn are perfect and the cigar’s only flaw is that it ends.
