Killer animated video of an Offshore Wind Farm mono-pile installation. Too bad there's no audio explanation or music...
In the beginning of the video you will see "rock dumping" in the installation area, this provides a stability and helps with future scour protection. At 00:55 you can see a yellow ROV on the seabed keeping a keen eye on the subsea work. The yellow ring with the colored "balls" that is temporarily placed around the mono-pile is kinda cool... The colored balls are buoys or air filled "floats". This ring around the mono-pile base acts as an air curtain to provide a sound barrier during the subsequent installation via the vibrating head. The yellow section of pipe with the work platform and boat landing that gets installed on top of the mono-pile is called the Transition Piece. The TP gets bolted and grouted into place. After the mono-pile installation a second heavy lifting ship and barge will install the Tower. Then the parts of the WTG (Wind Turbine Generator), the Nacelle (houses the rotor hub and gear box) and blades. Lastly the array cables (AC), offshore substations (AC to DC) and export cables (DC) to the beach for carbon free power.
