Owners Tom Hyland and Rick Lopez met several years back at Morrell & Co. Last summer, over some great wines and food, Tom said "Hey Rick, do you want to open a wine shop together". Rick responded, "absolutely!" One year, a few great lawyers and a liquor license later they opened Gowanus Wine Merchants!

Faccia Brutto tasting Saturday! Taste their full lineup of Brooklyn-made traditional Italian liqueurs, including the limited seasonal treat, Nocino. Nocino is a walnut liqueur with a rich bittersweet profile that makes it a perfect after-Thanksgiving digestif. (Or you can pour it over ice cream or dump a slug in your coffee if you want to feel like a millionaire.) Brilliant digestifs (and an ace aperitivo to replace Campari on your bar cart) is what Faccia Brutto does, some come taste them all and get expert cocktail advice while you’re at it. Saturday 4-7pm. Tastings always free at Gowanus Wine Merchants.

Bardstown Bourbon tasting Friday! Could you use a drink? Come taste the good stuff. Heck, the GREAT stuff. Bardstown has been the contract distiller behind some of your favorite whiskeys, and now they’re applying that expertise toward their own bottlings. Their wheated bourbons (Pappy is a wheated bourbon btw) from revived Kentucky legend Green River and their own Bottled-in-Bond 6 yr, their high-rye 6 yr bourbon, and hold onto your hats… their limited Amrut Cask, a blend of 8 to 14 yr whiskeys finished in Amrut Indian Single Malt casks. It’s spectacular and free to try. Friday, Nov 8 5:30-8pm.

MEET THE WINEMAKER! Thursday, Nov 7: Taste wines from the California vineyard closest to the Pacific Ocean with winemaker Rachel Martin. The aptly named Oceano wines is in Spanish Springs in the newish San Luis Obispo AVA. The ocean fog and marine breezes protect the grapes from harsh sun, ensuring that they never over ripen, making for vibrant wines that are naturally lower in alcohol. Come try her elegant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, both or which feel distinctly California while avoiding the cliches that can dog lesser wines. Thursday Nov 7, 5-7:30 pm. Tastings are always free at Gowanus Wine Merchants.

MEET THE WINEMAKER! Friday, October 25: Meet Swick Wines winemaker Joe Swick and taste four of his expressive Oregon and Columbia Valley wines: The Flood, Only Zuul, Chillable, and Bring It. All of Swick’s wines are natural in the best way — naked and raw as possible while fun and delicious. (“Wine that tastes like wine, not kombucha,” as Joe says.) Friday, October 25, 5:30-8pm. Tastings are always free.

Most bonkers tasting of the fall? Friday, Oct 18, come try Empirical’s BRAND NEW spirit, Cilantro! Plus, experience their incredible Doritos Nacho Cheese Spirit. What do they taste like? And yes, that’s still hard to imagine, which is 100% the reason why you should come by Friday to taste them and Empirical’s other utterly unique spirits created from whole cloth by former chefs at Noma in Copenhagen. And you’ll also get to taste a Cilantro Margarita courtesy of a one of the city’s great mixologists. Friday, October 18, 5:30-8pm.

Taste a piece of New York Whiskey history. Saturday, 4-7pm: Taste New York Distilling’s standout gins and incredible expressions of rye. And not just any rye — Horton Rye, a variety that hadn’t been grown commercially since the 1800s and they revived from 10 seeds. You have to try these rich, complex whiskeys that go well beyond the generic spice character of typical rye. And don’t sleep on the gins, which were developed by cocktail maven Allen Katz to shine however you want to use them — from a G&T to pre-prohibition cocktails like a Gin Daisy. Saturday, Oct 12, 4-7pm.

Taste 25 year-old Scotch! Plus two single malts from storied independent bottler Cadenheads and a lovely Calvados. Super Scotch tasting Friday October 11 5:30-8pm. Cadenheads is Scotland’s oldest independent bottler. They source the best barrels from top distillers and ages them to create incredible, distinctive expressions of Scotch. Come try their 10 year Glencadam and a 6 year “An Orkney” (There’s only two distilleries on the islands, and one is Highland Park. Just FYI.) The Enigma is a 25 year-old blended whiskey and you have to experience it for yourself. Rounding out the tasting, in deference to apple season is Chateau du Breuil’s lovely Calvados in a unique mallet-shaped bottle. Tastings are always free.

MEET THE WINEMAKER TASTING! Friday 5:30-8pm, taste the wines of Château Lestignac with winemaker Mathias Marquet. Camille and Mathias use no machinery in their vineyard, which is why you see these partners in life and wine on horseback. Taste four wines, from a fresh Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon blend, and a 100% Semillon Orange Wine, to lush, vibrant reds blends. Camille and Mathias inherited the family farm in 2008 and set about streamlining the vineyard to focus on prime locations and integrated a diverse garden and livestock to establish a genuine polyculture, complementing their mindful, organic farming approach. Their inaugural vintage as Lestignac was in 2009, marking the onset of their transition to biodynamic farming by 2011. Beyond the vineyard, the farm boasts an array of over 200 fruit trees, 80 chickens, and 20 sheep. And of course, horses. Friday June 28, 5:30-8pm. Tastings are always free.

Free Friday Tasting: Bourbon and Rye with 2023 Craft Distiller of the Year. Try Starlight’s Carl T. Bourbon and Old Rickhouse Rye, and Blackberry Whiskey, plus limited Brooklyn and Toasted Barrel bottles.

Starlight is a family-owned farm-to-glass distillery in Starlight, Indiana. The Huber family has been farming in Starlight since 1843, when that part of southern Indiana near the Ohio river was regarded as the wine and brandy capital of the U.S., but it took 150 years before state laws allowed them to make their own ports and brandies. In 2013, Starlight Distillery was finally granted a permit to produce whiskey. Just 10 years later, they won the American Spirits Council of Tasters’ award for Craft Distiller of the Year. Taste their everyday and special, limited bottles Friday, June 14, 5:30-8pm.

MEET THE MAKER TASTING Thursday June 13, 5:30-8pm. Come taste Antica Torino Vermouths and Stellare Aperitivi with Vito and Paola, who are also generously supplying Italian nibbles for the evening. 2024 is the summer of Vermouth, where more and more people are enjoying it on its own, not just as a cocktail component. Antica Torino’s vermouths are delicious and remarkably well priced compared to certain famous Italian vermouths. Their Stellare Aperitivi are perhaps an even greater bargain, with red bitter Primo, which is flexible enough to power both spritzes and Negronis, and savory, herbaceous Secondo (try it in a Vesper or Co**se Reviver #2).

TASTE UNIQUE TEA GINS! Thursday June 6th, 5-7pm. Guilder’s is a collaboration between distillers and a Taiwanese tea master. Their Canton Dry is a relatively straightforward dry gin with the unique twist of goji berries. Their Green Tea and Red Oolong gins are both made with tournament-grade teas from award-winning family farms. They are remarkable and the experience of tasting them is something we are proud to offer. The name Guilders refers to groups who, when tea was highly taxed in England but gin was not, would smuggle tea in gin bottles
