Georgian style wine-making is called 'Qvevri' named after the egg-shaped clay vessels designed to ferment the grapes and mature them to Orange wines we enjoy today. Some families continue to use vessels hundred of years old. The wine-making process is a communal activity, keeping those ancient methods in tact. The tradition of Qvevri wine-making defines the lifestyle of local communities and forms an inseparable part of their cultural identity and inheritance, with wine and vines frequently evoked in Georgian oral traditions and songs. That is why in 2013 UNESCO recognized it as essential to humankind’s cultural heritage. This distinction did more than identify these ancient clay pots as important historical artifacts; it acknowledged the enduring power of a living tradition.

Happy Pinot Noir Day! Pinot Noir is the world’s most popular light-bodied red wine. It’s loved for its red fruit, flower, and spice aromas that are accentuated by a long, smooth finish.

Pinot Noir is one of the few red grapes that’s commonly made into red, rosé, white, and sparkling wine! How are you celebrating Pinot Noir day?

Portugal and the UK became best buds when the Brits helped Portugal defeat the Spanish for their independence. On a roll, the Brits started beef with France including taxing the heck out of French wine imports and in turn giving Portugal the sweetest of deals, allowing Port wine to become 'vin du jour'. Pressures of demand led to adulterations, accusations and scandal across Douro. To protect their commodity, new Prime Minister, Marquês de Pombal created the first legislation to establish standards in wine production.

“To life, to life. L’chaim” 🍷

• The latest alcohol advice ignores the value of pleasure, Emily Oster writes.

The debate about the health benefits of alcohol has gone on for decades. In a 1991 segment on “60 Minutes,” a French researcher claimed that red-wine consumption was responsible for good health in France. While some scientists set out to prove this idea, others soon cast doubt on the possibility that red wine could really have any causal relationship with longevity. A number of researchers are now arguing that basically any amount of alcohol is bad for you.

Excessive alcohol consumption clearly leads to significant problems, physical and emotional. However, Oster notes, public-health advice is sometimes based on a “lexicographic” standard—putting the effects on health first, second, and third, and ignoring other considerations, including enjoyment. “A lexicographic standard applied to, say, meat consumption would hold that we must always eat burgers well done, because that is the best way to avoid any risk of E. coli, even though well-done burgers are tasteless,” she writes.

“Pleasure-agnosticism could make sense if the best available evidence indicated substantial harm from even moderate drinking. It does not,” Oster continues. “In 2018, The Lancet published a comprehensive study on the link between alcohol consumption and cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses. And the results indicate an upward trend in cancer, in particular, as alcohol consumption increases. But the effects at moderate levels of drinking—say, one to two drinks a day—are very small.”

‘If you do not enjoy, or actively dislike, alcohol, then the abstinence standard might be the right one for you. But many people do enjoy a drink from time to time,” Oster continues at the link in our bio. “If we accept that pleasure has value, and that the data are muddy, then the moderation standard makes more sense.”
