🚶♂️ Eighth Day of the Maltese Way of St. James
⛵ Seventh Day of Navigation (Salina - Palermo)
📅 Tuesday, July 23
Our night navigation proved to be a test of endurance. Battling heavy rain and rough seas, we set up the sprayhood to protect the command post. As dawn broke, we finally glimpsed the impressive Mount Pelegrini and docked at Adorno Marina in Palermo.
Recharged and ready, we wandered through Palermo’s lively streets, marveling at the restoration of its historic palaces and the magnificent Duomo. Miguel Angel Ruiz found fresh inspiration for his 'Gravities' series as we admired the Quattro Canti.
The Cathedral of Our Lady Maria Assunta, with its Norman design and Baroque details, provided a profound moment as we stamped our Pilgrim’s Passport. We then journeyed to Monreale, where the cathedral’s world-renowned mosaics and the Romanesque cloister captivated us with their beauty.
Our exploration continued with a visit to the Teatro Massimo, Palermo's cultural landmark, and the ancient Parco Archeologico di Segesta. The Doric Temple and Theater at Segesta harmonize with the surrounding landscape, showcasing the region's historical splendor.

🚶♂️ Seventh Day of the Maltese Way of St. James
⛵ Sixth Day of Sailing (Lipari - Salina - Palermo)
📅 Monday, July 22
This morning, we descended to the port using our dinghy, departing from Marina Corta to visit the Cattedrale di San Bartolomeo. The ascent through Lipari’s narrow, winding streets led us to the fortress at the island's peak, where we explored the town hall, the famous Filippino restaurant, and the incredible Archaeological Museum—one of Italy’s most important underwater archaeology sites. Throughout the old town, we discovered numerous Neolithic remnants that connect us to the island's ancient past.
After refueling, we navigated past Porto Pignataro, circling the eastern coast of Lipari. We marveled at the clear waters of Canneto Bay, a stunning mix of emerald and turquoise hues, thanks to the pumice stone mines in the north. Despite the choppy seas, we made it to Salina, where we anchored in the peaceful bay and stocked up on provisions, including the island’s exquisite white wine, Denomination of Origin Salina.
As evening approached, we prepared for the most challenging part of our journey yet—the 80-mile crossing to Palermo. We set sail at 20:00 h, facing waves up to 2 meters and a stormy night ahead. But the spirit of adventure keeps us pushing forward. 🌊
Captain’s Log:
11:30 h: Refueled in Lipari, set course for Salina.
14:30 h: Anchored in Salina.
20:00 h: Departed for Palermo, 80 miles ahead. Rough seas, stormy night.
Stay tuned for our next log as we navigate this epic maritime journey!

🛥️ Day 6: Taormina - Reggio Calabria - Lipari 🌅
📍 Taormina - Reggio Calabria - Lipari
Our journey today began in the early hours, untying from the buoy at Taormina with the night still surrounding us. As we sailed into the legendary Strait of Messina, the calm waters began to stir—a subtle nod to the mythological clash between Scylla and Charybdis. Despite the turbulence, we maintained our course and made it across to Calabria.
🌄 Reggio Calabria By morning, we arrived at the port of Reggio Calabria. Here, we took some time to address minor issues with the boat and explore the city. Our journey led us to the impressive 'Museo Archeologico Nazionale Reggio Calabria', home to the magnificent Riace Bronzes. These ancient Greek sculptures, dating back to the 5th century BC, are a true testament to the artistry of the time.
🥘 Local Flavors and Stamps Before departing, we indulged in local delicacies at a charming restaurant and added another stamp to our Pilgrim's Passport—a tangible memory of our visit.
🌊 Setting Sail for Lipari By noon, we left Reggio Calabria behind, heading towards the island of Lipari. The sea was calm, with Stromboli’s smoky puffs visible on the horizon, guiding us to our next destination.
🌅 Lipari Arrival As the sun set, we anchored at the picturesque Marina Corta in Lipari. The beauty of the island was not lost on our artist of the sea, Miguel Angel Ruiz, who captured the moment in his sketchbook. After a day filled with exploration and reflection, we enjoyed a peaceful evening on board.
Captain’s Log 📜
04:00 h Cast off, wind and sea calm, temperature 24º C.
