Last night’s OREGON v CALIFORNIA Chardonnay blind-tasting was one for the books. Overall, the incredible high quality of West Coast Chardonnay was on display, but it was the Oregon, reduction-driven wines that most charmed a room full of Napa winemakers, vintners, sommeliers, and industry friends most.
The favorite wine blind was, hands-down, Walter Scott 2021 X Novo. 2021 was a breakout vintage for OR Chardonnay, and this wine clearly showed why all eyes are on the Eola-Amity Hills right now.
The 2nd and 3rd place favorites were also from OR, with a lot of Eola-Amity fruit: 00 Wines “VGW” and Morgen Long.
Stylistically, the OR wines had much more in common with each other and came from a similar school of thought, while the California wines exhibited a broader palette of richness, phenolics, and fruit profile.
Overall, the premise was slightly flawed—our comparison was less about two whole states of production and more about the entirety of California and one small corner of Willamette Valley: the Eola-Amity Hills. (We added Eyrie in the Dubdee Hills to give OR a bit more range.)
Thanks to Artie of for being a helluva host and for inspiring this tasting—a toast to the incredible quality of Chardonnay made in the US today.
And thanks to for documenting this event!
