From Boomer to Gen Alpha: How Generation Names Are Invented

*People can be categorized into many groups — location, race, gender, political affiliation — but age is a great common denominator. Generations are classified by agreed-upon time periods, and everyone falls into one of these groups, from the Silent Generation of the 1920s to the up-and-coming Gen Alpha.

Scientists baffled after discovering Earth has two secret mountains more than 100 times TALLER than Everest

*Since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay first reached the summit of Mount Everest in 1953, conquering the world's highest peak has been a goal of almost every serious mountaineer on the planet.

But this famous peak pales in comparison to two secret mountains, which are more than 100 times taller than Everest's 8,800-metre summit, scientists have discovered.

Reaching heights of around 620 miles (1,000km) these continent-sized 'islands' of rock dwarf anything else found on our planet.

CNN insider reveals shocking 'truth' of why ailing network has laid off 200 staff

*CNN is laying off 200 workers from its TV division because it has become so 'bloated' and overstaffed with people who do the bare minimum, it is claimed.

'Layoffs all the time - they needed to cut the fat,' an insider, in response to Thursday's firings.

The mole added that the network is 'very duplicative' - with many workers whose roles closely overlap - and that it is a 'money pit.'

The firings, meanwhile, come as part of CEO Mark Thompson's long-in-the works restructuring plan - one that seek to put emphasis on CNN's digital future instead of the news channel.

In a statement issued Thursday morning, Thompson warned that future is still unclear - while revealing to The New York Times how CNN is now set to roll out a streaming service that will feature all of its most well-known stars.

The layoffs, as a result, will affect the network's traditional TV operations, he said - though it still remains unclear if any big names were affected.

'Layoffs all the time - they needed to cut the fat,' the source said in response to the station announcing it was laying off about 200 staff from its struggling TV division.

Edward McLean, owner of the Washington Post, before Senate committee investigating the Teapot Dome scandal. McLean lied for Albert Fall, stating he had loaned Fall money. 1924.

*The Teapot Dome scandal was a political corruption scandal in the United States involving the administration of President Warren G. Harding. It centered on Interior Secretary Albert Bacon Fall, who had leased Navy petroleum reserves at Teapot Dome in Wyoming, as well as two locations in California, to private oil companies at low rates without competitive bidding.[1] The leases were the subject of an investigation by Senator Thomas J. Walsh. Convicted of accepting bribes from the oil companies, Fall became the first presidential cabinet member to go to prison, but no one was convicted of paying the bribes.

Before the Watergate scandal, Teapot Dome was regarded as the "greatest and most sensational scandal in the history of American politics".[2] It permanently damaged the reputation of the Harding administration, already hurt by its handling of the Great Railroad Strike of 1922 and Harding's 1922 veto of the Bonus Bill.[3]

Congress subsequently passed permanent legislation granting itself subpoena power over tax records of any U.S. citizen, regardless of position.[4] These laws are also considered to have empowered Congress generally.[5]

More big-name earnings are due, and President Trump is due to address Davos

Investors are juggling the implications of Trump 2.0 with AI excitement and earnings.

Stock futures edged lower early Thursday, ahead of President Trump's expected video address to Davos at 11 a.m. ET, after which he plans to take questions from European executives.

Days into his new term, Trump has reinvigorated enthusiasm about artificial intelligence with a $500 billion AI-infrastructure project, Stargate. But he has also leveled a range of tariff threats, spanning Canada, Europe, Mexico and China.

Meanwhile, earnings continue to roll in. GE Aerospace, American Airlines and Texas Instruments are among the companies expected to report results Thursday.

In recent trading:

Stock futures ebbed. The S&P 500 closed within 0.1% of a new record on Wednesday.

Tech stocks led losses. Nvidia, ARM and Oracle shares declined premarket after rallying Wednesday on the Stargate announcement. Elon Musk has since expressed skepticism about the project.

Bitcoin continued to retreat. The cryptocurrency slipped below $102,000, after hitting a new intraday record above $109,000 earlier in the week.

Treasury yields were broadly flat. The benchmark 10-year Treasury settled on Wednesday at about 4.6%.

Overseas stocks were mostly higher. Germany’s DAX index edged up after closing at a new record on Wednesday. Stocks rose in Tokyo and Shanghai, but slipped in Hong Kong.

The yen crept higher against the dollar. The Bank of Japan is expected to raise interest rates Friday, which would boost the currency.
