Plato once remarked that the inventor of beer must have been a wise man, but he was mistaken. In truth, beer was discovered by women. Not only did they make this crucial discovery, but their contributions over the centuries have been instrumental in shaping the brewing process as we know it today. Around 7,000 years ago, women in Mesopotamia began mixing cereal grains with water and herbs for food purposes. Through this intuitive act, they unknowingly created a brew that would spontaneously ferment into what we now call beer.

As women continued experimenting with the process, they became experts in producing this cloudy, thick, yet highly nutritious liquid. Their skill and knowledge grew to the point where, according to historian and beer sommelier Jane Peyton, women were the sole producers and sellers of beer for thousands of years. This tradition carried on until the Middle Ages, when beer brewing took a significant leap forward with the introduction of hops, a discovery attributed to Abbess Hildegard of Bingen. This remarkable woman, who was also a theologian, writer, and botanist, found that hops not only added bitterness but also extended the drink's shelf life, revolutionizing beer production.

However, with industrialization, women’s central role in beer production began to fade. Despite this, more women today are reclaiming their place in the industry, enjoying, producing, and sharing their passion for a drink that, contrary to common belief, was never exclusively a man's creation. The rich history of women in brewing reminds us of their often-overlooked contributions, especially in shaping one of the world’s oldest beverages.
