I'm sure you're all, like, "Hey, but it's a satellite AOC"; to which I respond "Sure, it's an outer cru, certainly not Grand Cru Classe, but the vintage, man!... 2015! Where are you going to find a 2015 (anything Bordeaux), let alone for under $30"?! Tasted blind. Bought a bunch. Worth every penny.

AIX Rose 2023 on Sale $15.99 - (reg $19.99)
[Pronounced "X"] and indicating the source appellation Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence, an area within France's greater Provence region. Comprised of the varieties you'd expect from Provence: Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault. 90+ ratings from Wine Enthusiast & James Suckling. But then, of course, there's 'Whispering Angel' ($23) and even though it presents practically identical qualities, it's worth the extra money bc of the poetic name. Right?

From a 120+ year-old vines planted above the Agly Valley near the town of Maury about 30 miles north of the border with Spain and 20 miles inland from the Mediterranean. The winery produces 'Brave' only in outstanding vintages - they declassified 2018-20. 360 bottles made; 6 are here now. Tasted two weeks ago - worth every penny. Label and vineyard each pictured.

ADVANCED NOTICE: MONDAY FEB 24: WINE & DINE EVENT AT SQUARE BURGER
Part wine tasting, part wine buying, part fine dining, part formal and fairly advanced wine education, McKInney Wine Merchant and Square Burger are embarking on a series of monthly dinners a week from Monday. The finishing touches are going on the menu later today and will be published. Those who are aware of the capabilities of both businesses - esp the talent of Chef Craig Brundege - will be booking early (today) by calling Square Burger at 972-542-0185. We plan to seat up to 44 guests. 5 course dinner will include Scallop & Celery Root Puree; Pecan Crusted Snapper; Duck Breast and Braised Short Rib. Best Nog EVER!

NORTH COAST NOG
A classic prepared by my late friend, Russ Frasier of Humbolt Co. CA. First served at the Rio Dell Lodge circa 1958
12 Eggs, separated
2C sugar
4C Brandy (if possible, 2ea Korbel Classic and Korbel "XS") can sub bourbon but it's 'hotter'
2C Light Rum
1Q Milk
1Q Whipping Cream
Beat egg yolks well, add sugar and beat until smooth. Slowly add/belnd liquors then milk (you can trim liquor qty by 1/3 if you don't want to knock everyone on their butts, but NO less!)
Whip egg whites until stiff and fold in. Ditto whipping cream.
SERVES 4!

Lesson for budding somms over a cup of coffee. "Deciphering a Typical French Label": The PLACE is most important - here, sourced from near the village of BUSSIERES in the MACONNAIS region (Macon-Bussieres / Appellation Macon-Villages). In this case a 1.8 acre vineyard at the foot of a mountain known as le MONSARD. The French insist you know that Macon Whites are Chardonnay, hence no mention of grape variety. Out of respect for place, the winery name is not emphasized: "Les Heritieres du Comte Lafon" (Heirs of Count Lafon). The Propietor's office (and winery) is located in an area between the villages of Milly and Lamartine - in (southern) Burgundy. Absent from the label bc "of course we are!" - Certified Organic & Biodynamic. Now you know a little more. It's what we do. PS, this Chardonnay arrives today - $40
