Down the road from the store!

MCSD has been working with CalTrout since 2014 on a restoration project involving land along the Mad River Bluffs at the end of School Road and Ocean Drive. This project began as way to address the decommissioning and reclamation of the District’s Percolation Ponds that were previously used to discharge treated wastewater. The project includes the conversion of these ponds into off-stream habitat for salmonids and other species. It also includes constructing trails and a Mad River Access point in the bluff area at the west end of School Road. CalTrout, with the support of MCSD, has obtained grant funding from the Coastal Conservancy, Fish & Wildlife, the State Habitat Conservation Fund, the Wildlife Conservation Board, and matching funds from CalTrout, Redwood Community Action Agency and the District. CalTrout worked with the District, SHN, Northern Hydrology & Engineering and GHD to prepared design documents, obtained the necessary permits (including CEQA) and bid the Project. The bid for the construction of the Project was recently awarded to Kernan Construction and is scheduled to begin on August 15. With the beginning of construction, the Mad River Bluffs Trails at the end of Ocean Dr. will continue to be closed until the completion of the project. A full project update and presentation will be provided at the MCSD Board of Directors meeting on September 7, 2022, at 7 p.m., which is an open and public meeting.
