Winter Pollen Patties 2024
Did you know there is an optimal winter temperature for hives to economically move around the hive? Low 40’s allow colonies to cluster and consume honey at the most optimal rate in order to sustain til spring. Too cold and it’s difficult for them to move to the honey, too warm they spread out and start consuming more honey. With these warmer temps I’ll do what I can to help the lighter yards. These patties are mostly sugar, light protein , lipids , nutrients, vitamins and minerals. They provide emergency food, absorb moisture, boost the hives early, and help track hive growth. This food is used by the bees to help replenish their fat stores and encourages the start of the next generation. These are the dark brood combs the bees use to raise their nest. Later, honey super boxes will be added to collect the honey. Thanks for watching. Enjoy.
Winter Beekeeping in Indiana. When the cluster reaches the top of the frames they can use a little help through winter.
Deck the Halls with Local Beeswax Candles.
There are places in all businesses that require a jump to the next level. In beekeeping, there are hobbyists, side liners , and commercial levels. Every level comes with new challenges. For my entire career I’ve had to lift everything. I still do. For one weekend I rented this equipment to move bees out of a windy apiary. I never grew up on a farm, and always envied beekeepers with access to lifting and loading equipment. When I learned how much it costs I thought how do I do that. I still don’t know 😄. A friend taught me, there are no problems just creative solutions. I’m trying to embrace that more and maybe have a little fun along the way
Come see what’s been brewing this Friday (10/20) 11-1pm at Smoking Goose Meatery meet the maker tasting event. Experience treasures from the honey chest.
The official unofficial Hive of the Indy 500 bees 🙂 safe in their new home.
It’s only May and we’ve already done over a dozen relocations. Each one is different. We genuinely enjoy meeting the people as much as the bees.
Pulled out some beautiful slabs of comb near 48th and kessler today 🐝
Fall Apiary Feels. There isn’t much more I can do for the bees at this point. Reflect on all the building, splits, maintenance, harvesting, ect. There is a lot of hope going into winter, knowing a handful of colonies will be lost. As a provider of beehives for hundreds of Indiana residents, it is my job to bring though as many healthy hives as I can. Thankful for the new yards I’ve placed bees in, the people who support the efforts, the learning, the grind, and a little slower pace to spend more time with family and friends.
