Ensuring quality from the start
Ensuring Quality from the Start 🧼🫧
At Robert Clay Vineyards, we believe that high-quality wine starts long before the grapes are harvested. The number one mistake winemakers make is a lack of cleanliness. Missing even one spot can ruin a wine or require additives and processes to save it. That's why we go to extreme measures to ensure all our equipment goes through a meticulous 3-part sterilization process, repeated three times, prior to harvesting the grapes.
Winemaking is often said to be 95% cleaning, and for good reason. Proper sanitation is crucial to prevent contamination and ensure the quality, aroma, and flavor of the wine. Even a small lapse in cleanliness can introduce microbes that spoil the wine, leading to costly and time-consuming remediation efforts.
By maintaining such rigorous standards, we ensure that every bottle of wine we produce is of the highest quality, free from contamination, and true to its intended flavor. Cleanliness is not just a step in our process; it's the foundation of our winemaking philosophy.

✂️Progressing steadily in the pruning process, we’re making headway at a slow but consistent pace. With the completion of the 181 block, we now only have the remaining Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon blocks left to tackle for the 2024 pruning season🙌🏻
Embracing the art and science of viticulture 🍇✂️
Transitioning to cane pruning using the Guyot method isn’t always straightforward, especially when we encounter damaged vines. This video takes you behind the scenes to show how we adapt and make decisions to ensure the health and productivity of our vineyard, even when faced with less than perfect conditions.

🍷2023 Robert Clay Vineyards Estate Merlot being gravity fed into new Radoux French Oak Barrels. No pumps! One more way we introduce as little oxygen as possible to our wines.
This Merlot is the wine that almost wasn’t!
After the hailstorm in April, we “re-pruned” the Merlot block and started over. Praying for the best!
We harvested less than one ton of that 2nd crop; which made one full barrel.
We’re excited to get this one in barrel, let it age a few years and see how it turns out🌟
🎄Christmas came early!🎄
Picked up these sexy new barrels and couldn’t be more pleased. Will be doing some serious aging of our 2023 Estate Cab and Merlot

Super Fine Blend barrels epitomize the harmony between wood and wine, born from a pursuit of perfection. Meticulously crafted from select, rare wood sourced from premier forests, its unique grain tightness enhances the wine’s aromatic complexity. Released gradually during aging, it imparts fine, soft tannins, making it ideal for extended aging. Due to its limited production, stemming from raw material availability, it’s a coveted choice for prestigious global wine estates. Known for its high aromatic potential and gentle extraction, it’s a quality investment for winemakers. It stands as the world’s leading premium barrel.

Removing all the secondary fruit in preparation for harvest tonight. Secondary fruit is the fruit that set after Mother Nature “pruned” the vines via the April hailstorm. There isn’t much of it but, this second crop is not ripe and without the right numbers we don’t want it getting mixed in with the good stuff!
