Being that time of year again, those interested in doing plaques for crew, sponsors, etc., we really need to be getting pictures together that you want to use and I need the information you want on them. Also, if anyone else is interested, these make very nice gifts to give your sponsors and supporters to show your appreciation for their help throughout the year. I can do different sizes and they can be done in a variety of ways. 8x10 single plate plaques (such as most of these) are $15 each and multi-plate plaques are priced job-by-job. Please message me or call me at 965-659-8258 if you have any questions.

* You do not have to be one of our cars we letter to take advantage of this. As long as we can get a good picture of your car, we can do these *

Welshan’s Extended Vacation Pays Dividends

By Brian McLeod

EASTABOGA, Ala. (Jan. 7) — Jason Welshan is known to sometimes work round-the-clock hours as he continues to build his Savage Race Cars brand into a potential car-building powerhouse in his home region, so it was an overdue respite when the Maryville, Tenn., driver and his wife Leanne took time for a week-long winter vacation to Cape Coral, Fla.

That trip was extended when the originally-scheduled Crate Racin’ USA Winter Shootout Series-sanctioned Hangover at 411 Motor Speedway in Seymour, Tenn., fell victim to snow, cold weather and predicted rain on Jan. 1 as the calendar rolled over to a new year. The event was canceled, and Welshan made the decision to stay a few extra days in the Sunshine State, and instead made his first racing appearance of the season in the season-opening Ice Bowl (presented by Racecar Engineering) Saturday night at Talladega Short Track.

“We stayed in Florida and just chilled and relaxed, and gathered our thoughts up heading into a new season,” Welshan said. “My wife Leanne also helps me run the shop, so she’s really got two jobs because she works full time at her other job. It’s stressful at times, and we had a real good time down there on vacation. I had my head clean when we returned, and I was ready to get after it.”

Perhaps Welshan should take a vacation more frequently. The veteran driver, who won last year’s national title on the Newsome Raceway Parts Crate Racin’ USA Dirt Late Model Series with four victories during a year-long campaign in which 19 races were completed, blasted out of the gate in the organization’s winter miniseries with a flag-to-flag victory in a 40-lap main. He added exclamation points to his weekend summary by topping the qualifying session over a 41-car field with a lap clocked at 14.635 seconds, and then winning a heat race by leading from start to finish while steadily extending his lead in the preliminary event.

The Main Event Rolls
When feature time rolled around the next day, Welshan’s new Savage Race Cars entry was ready to fly, and fly it did. Welshan led every circuit in the main in what he called “a near-perfect” weekend, and registered his second-career victory in the prestigious event at the Adam Stewart-managed facility. His last win in the annual affair occurred in 2021.

Welshan left behind a late-race battle for the second spot between Bo**er Brooks and Jeff Smith, but the close racing between the trailing duo sent Smith spinning on the final circuit, leaving him with a 16th-place finish in the 25-car field.

Brooks continued to a runnerup finish over Trevor Sise, Oakley Johns and Wyatt Wilkerson.

This One’s for Mamaw Dee
A few weeks before the victory, Welshan’s grandmother passed away, leaving an emotional hole in both his often-gentle heart, as well as his racing program. It was a huge personal hit that brought a bulky, heavy-set man to his knees, and a turn of events that still resonates with sadness as a new season dawns.

“She was more like my mother,” Welshan said, his eyes starting to show tears at the precious memories. “She took care of us, but she never went to the races. She’d call me, and always wanted to know how we’d done that night. She was afraid I’d get hurt, and she was always real protective, so she couldn’t come watch because it made her nervous. We were so close, and I know she’s the main reason I am who I am today.”

Still stinging from the loss of someone so dearly close to him, Welshan was met by his daughter Emily just outside the winner’s circle, and the pair shared a long, emotional embrace. Unspoken memories of his grandmother flowed between them, and his own perspiration from the race mixed with tears as the duo comforted each other before taking part in victory lane ceremonies.

“It’s just really tough for me…” Welshan said, his voice trailing into the distance while so many good memories appeared to swirl in his thinking patterns. It almost seemed like there wasn’t enough room in his mind for both sadness and happiness, and Emily’s unexpected presence meant much.

“My daughter…she really got me tore up and teared up with that hug,” Welshan said. “It was a really special moment. That’s about all I can say.”

A Crew Comes Together
Welshan is often first to credit his success to others in his closest circle, whether it be sponsors, supporters, volunteers or full-time employees who have been hired to continue the current upward path of his company. Savage Race Cars was started from scratch, and continues to dig away and create its own niche in a competitive industry.

“Dink Dankans actually built that race car,” Welshan said. “We just hired Kyle Courtney on a full-time basis, and it’s probably one of the best decisions I’ve made. He’s a young guy, and already doing a great job and making a difference for us. There’s just so much going on at our shop, and now I’ve got some tremendous help as we continue to grow the deal. We decided to build my primary race car first, and apparently they did an excellent job.

“The car was just sitting there with no laps on it, and then when 411 [Motor Speedway’s Hangover] was canceled at the start of the season, we arrived at Talladega [Short Track], and we hadn’t even seated the brakes yet. I had hardly any brake pedal in that heat race we won, and had to drag the brake pedal for about eight laps. It was a fabulous, perfect weekend for us, and our first appearance for Mike Clonce Racing, who has joined us for this year. We picked a good weekend to break the ice with him, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Sponsors and Schedules
Welshan’s Hux Motorsports-fielded, Savage Race Cars-built machine carried sponsorship from J&J Trucking, Mike Clonce Racing, Fike Fabrication, Competition Racing Equipment, Team Huskey Logistics, Crate Engine Technology, Millwood Plumbing and Allen’s Pools.

The series next moves to Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla., for the three-day Sunshine Nationals slated Jan. 19-20, which is the third edition of an annual collaboration with DIRTcar Racing’s Pro Late Model division.

I want to make a quick mention as to why this car is important to me. I did some research tonight and ironically, this Sunday will mark 20 years exactly that I have been associated with the Cardwell family. How it happened, I am really not sure, but for some reason Buster Cardwell either called me or came to me at the racetrack, i honestly cannot remember, and told me he had a couple gocarts he needed numbers for and asked if i were interested in doing them. Of course I knew who Buster was, but I really had no interaction with him or any of his kids. I think I was done racing by the time Jason started, and had only been doing this for maybe a year. The only time I had really been in the same room with him was a few years earlier when he came to pick up a car they had bought at Scott Miller's garage next to my house. I know many of you will remember the red car with the bowtie on the fuel cell. I think Buster raced it for a few years and then Clyde got the rest of the life out of that car. But even at that, I dont think that was where we got acquainted, I was just a person there, but somehow we got together on those gocarts. Three of them actually, a red one, white one, and blue one. That led to doing Jasons car the next year and from there a 20 year relationship that I am still proud to say today is my longest running relationship I have. I remember some of the good times I had at his shop. This may not be a good time, but I remember the first time I went there thinking someone is going to come around this curve and hit this shop, then a couple years later, someone came around the curve and hit the shop. It was just a wonder no one was in there and got hurt. Nobody else may remember this, but i think back to one time I was over there and Buster was driving, i think, a Chevy Cavalier that had some funky spoiler on it that looked like it was from fast and furious and someone asked him about it and he said he was doing R&D for the Car of Tomorrow for NASCAR. That was just something I would have expected him to come up with. I really took Buster as someone who didnt take life all that seriously. He was always in a good mood and sometimes i thought he was having the most fun when he was aggravating people. Even as the end was nearing, I always saw Buster as not wanting anyone to feel bad for him, he fought hard and I was proud of him for the fight I saw from him. But, unfortunately, I think we all knew what was coming and honestly, it felt like losing a member of my family. I said all that to say this, this car is important to me because 20 years ago this week, Buster Cardwell gave a guy starting out in race car lettering a chance to do some work for him when he didn't have to. He could have went to anyone, probably most of whom could have done him a lot better job than I was capable of at the time. But the trust he put in me then, and the trust his family has put in me for the next 20 years means something to me that I cannot repay him. I just hope he looks down Saturday night and is happy with what we have been able to do in his honor.

We want to thank everyone for their support during what has to be one crazy year for everyone. Over the last year and a half, I have been fortunate enough to be able to add a few new things to my business that will hopefully open some new avenues to exciting new products and services to add to what we can do already, but most exciting, I have been working diligently over the last two months on the construction of our new shop which will finally enable customers to bring their cars here if needed and allow us to expand our trophy business. A special Thank You to everyone who has helped and will be helping in getting that finished and operational. But most of all, I want to thank everyone who has given me a chance to work with them over the last 20 years. I know everything has not always worked out perfectly, and to be truthful, I have never heard of anyone who had 100% of everything go perfect. But I have the best and most loyal customer base in the business, and that is what I am looking for and most appreciative of. Finally, as we are about to embark on year number 20, I have been asked the same question at least once a day, and that is "how much will your wraps be this year?" I have spitballed a couple things with people, but I have not had a good answer on that subject. But over the last couple days I have thought a lot about it and I think I have come to a decision and will be releasing details on 2022 pricing later next week. Once again, thank you to everyone who has had any part of helping me get to my 20th anniversary, we wish you all the best in this holiday season.

Hearing the news today, we want to add our condolences to Danny Helton on the passing of his daughter. Danny always made sure she was represented on his car and I could always see him light up when he would talk about her when I was up there. Everyone please remember him during this time

We are sad to hear about the passing of Gerald Perry. It will be sad to not see him at the track, as he he was always someone I enjoyed spending time with and he was always nice to me. There really is not a comfort to a situation like this, but I do find some comfort in knowing the kind of life Gerald lived and the testimony he leaves behind. I had a preacher tell me once that the hardest thing about his duties was when he would do a funeral and had to struggle to find something good to say about the person. I am sure that will not be a problem with Gerald, the likelier problem will be having enough time for people to say all the good things about him that they can.

You always hear a lot of sayings, songs, etc. about "Going Home". Maybe Donald McIntosh is an example that it is possible to go home, and as it seems, not miss a beat on his way to the 2019 Schaeffer's Fall Nationals Championship. Congratulations to Donald, Crew Chief (and my longtime friend) David Bryant, Car Owner Larry Garner, and the rest of the Blount Motorsports team

The Durrence Layne Winter Shootout Series is a nice little 604 crate series that kicks off with the Ice Bowl and goes through the first of March. Jimmy Elliott kicked off the season with a win in the Ice Bowl and rode that momentum through to this seasons Championship. Jimmy probably has more convenient options closer to him that he could use for his lettering, but I appreciate that he has been a loyal customer and a hard racer

I can count on maybe a little more than one hand people who are the definition of a "WHEELMAN" I will not argue names, but i am not sure many will argue that Clyde Stanton is on that list. I am not sure he has ever sat in anything that he has not made fast, and when you go fast, you win Championships. Congratulations on this one and I wouldn't doubt we are right back here again soon

Over the years, I have watched Steve Owens do a little Pure Mini Racing, a little Street Stock racing, and I think even a little Enduro racing may be on the horizon. I have appreciated that he has allowed me to be a part of the ride and it makes me feel good that someone who works hard on their program is rewarded with a track championship

Congratulations to Wayne Rader and Jason Rollins on their Track Championships for Hux Motorsorts at Volunteer Speedway. I met Jerry Hux about this time last year, although I had been familiar with him for many years. I appreciate him and his team using us for their lettering needs and I am sure this is not the last time we will be talking about championships for them

Sometimes you can look in someones eyes and see that they mean business. I got that impression early this year when James Parrott told me in his shop he was aiming for the Sportsman Championship. With a great season, he did what he set out for and I am glad to be a part of it. Congratulations
