Have you considered hiking the 46 Adirondack High Peaks? We're offering a 46 High Peaks Workshop in October that covers a wide range of topics relevant for Aspiring 46ers: the history of hiking the 46, route selection, “trail-less” peaks, hiking efficiency, backcountry safety, rules & regulations of the region, and a demonstration of proper equipment. We will also discuss Leave No Trace skills and ethics throughout this course to protect this region of New York’s Forest Preserve for generations to come as we enjoy them.

10th Annual Fire Tower Light Up the Night Event

The NYS Chapter of the Forest Fire Lookout Association is pleased to announce the 10th Annual Lighting of the Fire Tower Event! Saturday, September 2nd at 9:00 pm they hope to have a light begin to shine in the cab of many towers across NYS, including the ones here in Newcomb! Last year they had so many wonderful volunteers that they were able to light 33 towers! They hope to increase that number this year. In the event of rain, the event will be held on Sunday, September 3rd at 9:00pm.
The event is done to honor the men and women who worked in these historic towers; protecting homes, businesses, communities and surrounding forests. The plan is to place a light in fire towers around the state from 9 to 9:30pm. We invite you to go to locations around Newcomb where you can look up, see the light on the horizon and remember that there was a fire tower observer there watching over our community.
