Theater Square Wine & Spirits encourages everyone to vote, and drink responsibly!

Proof & Wood Ventures, Inc. invest in and develop spirits brands, and also age their own spirits. Their core business is sourcing and bottling fine American whiskies, but they also import other high-quality spirits from around the world that were not available in the US previously. Founder Dave Schmier is delighted to be able to create both cocktail-friendly bottlings for value-focused bartenders and high-end collectors’ editions for connoisseurs. The name comes from the two things controlled as a blender and finisher of fine spirits, and the two things that are incredibly important to any spirit’s flavor: the proof at which it is bottled, and the wood of the barrel in which it is aged. This election year Proof & Wood shares the DC Collection.

Lobster Reef was started by the Brown family. No, not those Browns, but rather the people behind Cape Campbell Wines. They joined the Marlborough wine industry in 1980. Initially they grew grapes for other companies, but in 1992 they started their own company. In 2002 they expanded when they bought a block of land in the Blind River sub-region of Marlborough. Other loyal contract growers provide consistently high-quality fruit so you're guaranteed a great glass of wine. Their Lobster Reef label celebrates the unique, rugged coast which is just s stone's throw from the vineyard. It gets its name from the brightly coloured Rock Lobsters that have made the Marlborough coastline their home longer than anyone in the area can remember.

Lobster Reef Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is crafted to maximize the grapes' freshness and flavour. Aromatic and generous, the wine offers hints of stone fruits like peach and apricot on the nose, with underlying notes of citrus and herbs. The palate is concentrated with tropical fruits like guava, pineapple, and mango flavors. A vibrant and firm acidity zips along through the core. The wine reveals accents of lemongrass, and honeycomb on the finish. This varietal pours a rich golden colour. The finish is long, clean, and invigorating. It delivers, and is a best-seller vintage after vintage. Enjoy with lobster, other shellfish, or a simple fresh salad.

Happy International Chocolate Day!!! The history of chocolate can be traced back to 450 B.C., originating from Mesoamerica, present-day Mexico. The word “chocolate” is derived from the Nahuatl word, “chocolatl,” meaning “hot water” and the Aztec word, “xocoatl,” meaning “bitter water.” According to legend, chocolate found its way to Spain in the 16th century through Hernan Cortes, a Spanish explorer who discovered cocoa during his journey to the Americas. From then on, chocolate soon spread to other parts of Europe. The time-consuming process required to produce chocolate made it an expensive treat, which was restricted to the upper class. In 1828 the chocolate press was invented by a Dutch chemist called van Houten, eliminating the problem. The machine was able to squeeze roasted cocoa beans in order to obtain the fine cocoa powder used to make chocolate. This not only made chocolate more accessible to the common man, but also mass production possible. In the 20th century, chocolate is still being enjoyed all over the world, in a wide variety of exciting flavors and formulas. Cocoa is now grown and exported from over fifty countries, at over 4.7 million tons a year. It only makes sense that chocolate is celebrated on 13th of September, as Milton Snavely Hershey was born on this day in 1857. He was a renowned American businessman, known as the chocolatier who founded The Hershey Company, manufacturer of the Hershey’s confectionary brand.

Barton 1792 Distillery was established in 1879, and it continues today as the oldest fully-operating distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky. Situated in the heart of bourbon country on 196 acres, the distillery boasts 29 rickhouses, 22 other buildings including an impressive still house, and the legendary Tom Moore Spring. Barton 1792 Distillery is named in honor of the year Kentucky joined the United States.

Not only does it taste delicious, but it is also highly versatile- perfect for sipping on the rocks, mixing, cooking, baking, or in a cup of coffee. A great alternative to Bailey's Irish Cream. Flavors of bourbon, hot chocolate, pralines, and coffee cream are all present. Rich and smooth, this liqueur has all the creamy and chocolate truffle flavors you love, all expertly blended with fine bourbon.

MyStory Wines invite people to start a conversation. They believe in friendly discussions between friends, family, and neighbours. And the best way to start a conversation is to tell a story. They dedicate space on the label of each of their bottles for you to write your name and tell your story. After all, your story is yours to tell. The philosophy behind MyStory Wines Company is to produce approachable, food-friendly wines that over-deliver for a price. The wines are vinted and bottled in Templeton CA, from fruit growing in the Central Coast of California, Paso Robles AVA, and Templeton Gap District. The wines have no added sugar or grape concentrate, and are vegan.

The idea of MyStory really is that of Alexei Khimenko. He was born and raised in Moscow. After graduating Bolshoi Ballet Academy, he joined the famous Bolshoi Ballet Grigorovich Theatre. He later deported from Mother Russia to America, and opened Aleksey’s Market in Nashville, TN. Then he began a wine and spirits wholesale distributorship, expanding into Aleksey’s Imports Chattanooga. Then he was a Managing Director of a Wine and Spirits Division. Alexei dreamed of combining his background in art and theatre with his experience in the wine business. He also wanted to focus more on family. He wanted to tell his story, and to inspire others to share theirs.

The story of Malbec can be traced back to southwestern France, namely the small Cahors region. The first records of the grape date back to the 16th century when it was labeled Auxerrois. The name Malbec was introduced at some point in the 1780s, most likely because Monsieur Malbeck planted it in Bordeaux. It really put itself on the world wine map in the mid-1880s when the variety was introduced in Argentina and planted in the Mendoza region. This totally revitalized the varietal. Today it is planted in many countries, and does exceptionally well in California.

What makes the limited release MyStory Malbec different from the historic Malbecs is flavour profile. This is due to the barrels used during a 3 month additional aging, and what they impart to the wine. These barrels are from B.R. Distilling Company in Memphis, and used for their Blue Note Juke Joint Survivor Barrels. The wine tastes of blackberry jam, blueberry, raspberry, caramel, black cherry, unsweetened chocolate, toffee, and a touch of wild sage. Black currant is intertwined with subtle vanilla notes from the bourbon barrels. Flavors are balanced, and rich with layers of pleasantly assertive tannins overlaid with enticing oak. Multilayered. The finish is rich and complex. While enjoyable currently, this intense 15.8% red wine will continue to improve with proper cellaring for another 3-5 years in bottle. It will pair nicely with lamb loin, or a rosemary infused rack of lamb. Also works well with hard cheeses, and many Italian dishes.

MyStory, Malbec, Lot #018, Paso Robles, California, 2020, $23.99

08/24/2024

Armagnac is a distinctive kind of brandy produced in the Armagnac region in Gascony, in southwest France. It is distilled from an Eau-de-Vie usually made from a blend of four grapes including Baco 22A, Colombard, F***e Blanche and Ugni Blanc, traditionally using column stills. This is in contrast to the pot stills used in the production of Cognac, which is made predominantly from Ugni Blanc grapes. The resulting spirit is aged in oak barrels before release. Production is overseen by the Institut National de l'Origine et de la Qualité (INAO) and the Bureau National Interprofessionel de l'Armagnac (BNIA). Armagnac was one of the first areas in France to begin distilling spirits. Because the overall volume of production is far smaller than Cognac production, the brandy is less known outside Europe. In addition, for the most part it is made and sold by small producers, whereas cognac production is dominated by big-name brands.

Founded in 1832, during the reign of Napoleon III, Armagnac Castarède is the oldest Armagnac House. This unique know-how passed down to the six generations who have succeeded each other deserves their reputation of excellence. The Castarède estate is located in Gers, the heart of the Bas Armagnac. The castle dates back from the 16th century. It is surrounded by vineyards dedicated to the four grape varieties previously mentioned. The Castarède family possesses one of the most important collections of vintages. Ennobled by King Louis XVIII in 1818, the Castarède family gave the company its name and its coat of arms. Today that coat of arms is their logo- helmet, a greyhound, cross, and a heraldic shield.

By law, an XO Armagnac must have at least 10 years in oak. Armagnac Castarède Réserve de la Famille 20 Year Old massively over-delivers. This XO is a minimum of 20 years. Their casks are coopered from Monlezun Oak. Monlezun oak tends to be more tightly grained, and richer in tannins as compared to French Limousin oak, thus more ideal for a slower maturation process. Once the Armagnac has begun aging, the casks are stored in Maison Castarède's two cellars. After the long beauty rest, each cask of is brought to 40 proof before being bottled by hand. Castarède Réserve de la Famille is a light copper in colour. It is rich and harmonious. The nose is powerful and warm. The bouquet has notes of fruits, roasted coffee, butterscotch, vanilla, leather, and cinnamon. The palate is of glazed ripe plums, toast oak followed with arrays of spices, nutmeg, mixed fruits, and a slight hint of rancio. With a bit of honey too, it is well-balanced by a creamy, vanilla undertone. The finish, which is long and sweet, has a hint of caramel.

Castarède Réserve de la Famille 20 Year Old $57.99

08/13/2024

National Prosecco Day is celebrated today, 13th of August. It represents a time to raise a toast to the remaining days of the season. As we bask in the warmth of the resounding rays of summer, this day encourages people across the US to embrace life’s everyday celebrations. The sparkling wine Prosecco is made from a variety of grapes. One of the oldest is Glera. However, Prosecco can also be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir. Primarily grown and bottled in the Veneto region of Italy, Prosecco's draw is its elegant mousse. In wine-speak, the mousse is the lovely, persistent bubbles. These bubbles give Prosecco the sparkle that makes it so appealing for celebrations. Along with a touch of sweetness, a light-body, and refreshing aromas, Prosecco exudes an easygoing sense of fun. With a wallet-friendly price tag, Prosecco is perfect for any celebration. As the most sold sparkler in the U.S., it is fitting that this long revered aperitivo of choice for Italians should earn its own ‘National Day’ of recognition. Some say no other beverage defines the Italian philosophy of la dolce vita, or the good life, quite like Prosecco. As summer's fun lulls into autumn’s social afterglow, National Prosecco Day reminds us to enjoy the fruits of our labours. It’s as simple as picking up a couple of bottles of Prosecco, inviting some friends over, and savoring summer's end.

Our favourite Prosecco is Bellissima. It is from a collection of premium wines, all grown organically, and thoughtfully made in Italy. In Italian, Bellissima doesn’t just mean beautiful, but “most beautiful”. This is what inspires these wines, developed with the help of one of the world’s most beautiful women, super model Christie Brinkley. The vineyards are located about 50km due north of Venice, in the heart of Italy’s Veneto region, near Treviso, a lovely city known as the original producer of Prosecco. With its rolling hills, its ancient cathedrals, and the rivers Botteniga, Paive, and Sile flowing throughout its walled urban center, it is a place of unmatched natural beauty. Bellissima Prosecco has a uniquely complex floral aroma. This DOC Brut is made with 100% Glera grapes, and produced with the Italian Sparkling Winemaking technique: a natural secondary fermentation using the "Martinotti-Charmat" method. The wine has a fine and persistent perlage. It shines with delicate aromas of green apple, and light flavors of bread crust. A very versatile wine for food pairings, with its pleasant acidity and freshness, try it with vegetable tempura, crudités, and party friendly snacks. Look for the eye-catching bottle with an homage to Sandor Botticelli's "Birth of Venus" on it. Cin Cin!

August Bourbon Product Showcase
"15 Stars Fine Aged Bourbon - Private Stock”
Proof: 107
Mash Bill: (undisclosed)
Age: 7 & 15 years

Independent bottlers who show up in the crowded American whiskey field can be challenging - but this bottler has proven their worth. The father and son team of Rick and Ricky Johnson have jumped right into the deep waters and have not flailed yet. They have (over the years) put out a parade of straight bourbons, finished bourbons or blends of straight rye.

This first release of Private Stock Bourbon from 15 Stars is labeled as “7 & 15 YO,” and is an all-Kentucky blend of straight bourbons, though no distilleries are cited. It has a herbal and minty bouquet, with complex impressions of dried herbs into dark fruits that has both juicy/fresh/dried cherry elements. On the palate, this private stock embraces sour cherry and earthy rye, along with cocoa and molasses. It drinks quite easily for the proof point and is quite elegant for drinkers who prefer the flavors found in particularly mature Kentucky Bourbon.

We have 3 in stock behind the counter and we invite you to come by and add it to your collection. It’s priced at $137.99 + tax. We look forward to your visit to the Theatre Square Wine and Spirits - 651 South 4th Street in Louisville.

Pasqua Wines is a historic Veronese winery, owned by the Famiglia Pasqua. Their winery was founded in 1925. Today it is recognized worldwide as a producer and ambassador of prestigious Veneto wines. Pasqua combines a century of experience and deep understanding of the potential of the Valpolicella terroir with innovation in winemaking style. Their wines mainly represented through various expressions of Amarone, and labels representative of the east coast of Lake Garda, up to the Soave area. Their wines are an ensemble of time, composed of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Each bottle holds history, and knowledge passed down from generation to generation, combined with a glance towards the future. Their wines are intended to withstand time, expressing fullness, maturing, and evolving.

"In fair Verona, where we lay our scene..." Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare

Pasqua Romeo e Juliet is a red wine all about love and passion. This rosso is a blend of Corvina, Croatina, and Merlot. The grapes are picked by hand, and then left to dry in wooden crates in a drying loft. There, by means of humidity control and air circulation, the grapes lose around 30% of water content, thus achieving a high sugar concentration. This method is called Appassimento in Italian. It is an ancient, and artisanal drying technique. This raisination will also create a more lush, round, and velvet mouthfeel. Given that the grapes have differing ageing times, vinification takes place separately in steel tanks; thus the final blend is created at the end of this process. The wine is then aged in oak tonneau barrels for a period of three months.

In the glass it is a gorgeous, dense, and deeply coloured wine. Full of concentrated black and red cherry flavours, with plenty of hints of leather, and of spice. The palate has a layered texture, with muscular tannins providing a long finish. It is a wine of passion, longstanding tradition, and its strong link with its city of origin, Verona, and her rich history, culture, and beauty. If wine “is the Poetry of the Earth to the Heavens”, as Mario Soldati said, it is also a story, and this wine tells the love story that made Verona famous all over the world, the very myth that attracts thousands of tourists every day to visit one of the most romantic places, and invites them to leave and exchange messages of love in the courtyard of “Juliet’s house”. An original photograph of Juliet’s courtyard by the extremely talented photographer Giò Martorana, has become the only look for these wine bottles, an unmistakable element of their identity.

Perched upon a cliff overlooking the left bank of Bordeaux’s ancient meandering Durezes River stands Château Fonfroide. A cold spring on the property gives the chateau its name, and helps irrigate the 185-acre estate vineyard. History is rich here, firmly rooted in the limestone, and in the clay soil that has been both tilled, and cared for by the Dutheillet de Lamothe family for well over 300 years. Their wines are a compelling homage to the family’s deep winemaking experience.

A blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscadelle, Château Fonfroide Blanc has an absolutely beautiful pale yellow colour, with a very slight green tint in the glass. The bouquet is both expressive, and elegant, with tropical fruit notes, citrus, exotic fruits, and white blossoms like acacia. The palate is fresh, well balanced, and dry, with grapefruit notes, and a pleasant finish. It pairs perfectly with appetizers, lighter summer fare, and seafood such as scallop brochette, or salmon tartare, or even with spicier Asian inspired dishes. This wine will also complement dishes with tarragon, asparagus, shaved fennel, or citrus. Serve it chilled, and enjoy now, or choose to wait a couple of years as the profile continues to develop. Lively, round, well structured, and refreshing, it is an excellent choice for these hot summer afternoons. Cheers!

Crow Canyon produces wines with intensity, classical varietal fruit flavors, and distinct Californian terroir. Led by Christophe “Cris” Legrandjacques, their winemakers strive to craft wines that are easy to drink, and flavorful. These lots are crafted into wines that deliver wonderful texture, taste, and value.

After harvest, the Chardonnay grapes were gently pressed and fermented in stainless steel under temperature-controlled conditions to preserve the crispness and ripe fruit flavors. The wine went through a secondary malolactic fermentation for creaminess, and then was oak-aged sur lie for additional complexity and toastiness. The wine was gently filtered and fined prior to bottling.

Deep, golden yellow in the glass, the wine exudes a plethora of appetizing aromas: agave, hazelnut, cream, apple, pear, white blossom, and lemon meringue delicately spiced with dried cardamom, coriander and nutmeg. This dry, medium-bodied wine has hints of lemon mixed with tropical fruit, and light touches of vanilla throughout the palate. Pineapple notes continue on the smooth, lingering finish.

Use this white for your next dinner party. Pairs well with grilled seafood, risotto, and roasted chicken. Cheers!

KWV, or Ko-operatiewe Wijnbouwers Vereniging van Zuid-Afrika (Co-operative Wine Growers Association of South Africa) is a producer in the Western Cape region. It was founded in 1918, the same year as that country's first democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela, was born. In the space of just over a century, the country, along with its wine industry, has seen many changes. KWV played a major role to unite wine producers during the industry’s fledgling years. KWV features prominently in the pages of South Africa’s history.

With access to grapes from more than 50 farms and 400 vineyard sites across the Western Cape’s Paarl, Stellenbosch, Swartland, Perdeberg, Malmesbury, Darling, Elgin, Robertson, and Wellington regions, KWV’s ability as a commercial producer to source the finest quality grapes for a premium expression of the Cape Winelands is unrivalled.

The winemaking team takes care when selecting grapes to ensure they meet KWV’s exacting quality standards. They handle the grapes expertly before and during transport to KWV’s cellar facilities in Paarl. This site covers nearly 32 hectares, at the heart of which stands KWV’s imposing Cathedral Cellar, built in 1930.

A triptych is generally regarded as a set of three items intended to be appreciated together to understand the whole. KWV Cathedral Cellar Triptych hinges on the same philosophy: vineyard, winemaker, and cellar. Those three things work in unison to create a red blend which is a seamless harmony.

Triptych is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Tempranillo, Petit Verdot, Petit Sirah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Malbec. This layered and sophisticated red blend exudes aromas of plum, cherries, white pepper, red fruit, to***co leaf, and cedary oak. The palate reveals velvety tannin textures with a well-rounded, persistent finish. Red berries, cassis and Turkish Delight, with subtle hints of dark chocolate and dried spices are all present. The wine is juicy with a firm tannin structure. It is perfectly balanced with a neatly tapered lingering finish. The wine was racked to barrel where it underwent malolactic fermentation. It was then racked from the lees and returned to barrel for further maturation in French oak for 18 months. Enjoy this wine on its own, or as an accompaniment to meat casseroles, game dishes, and any other flavoursome red meat.

Having established a vineyard in the early 1970’s in Bolognano, located in the heart of Abruzzo at the base of Gran Sasso, Marcello Zaccagnini’s philosophy has always been tied to the land. His slogan, “Wine, art of man”, comes from his work with the world renowned naturalist artist and early proponent of sustainability, Josef Beuys. The tralcetto (stick) is an actual grapevine cutting from the vineyards that is tied by hand onto each bottle, representing the connection between the wine and the land. Zaccagnini’s mission is to invest in, and promote the culture of the people, environment, and wine-making processes that represent the values of Abruzzo, as well as making the winery a cultural hub for artists, musicians, scholars, and wine enthusiasts. Marcello has accumulated a world class art and sculpture collection that is on public display in the winery, as well as in the vineyards, and supports many art festivals throughout the year.

Zaccagnini's Pinot Grigio has a tropical fruit bouquet, and extremely pleasant aromas are on the nose, leading to a fresh, well-balanced wine. It possesses great minerality, a generous mouthfeel, and a crisp, refreshing finish. The wine is made from grapes from a single vineyard. The vines are farmed sustainably, and hand harvested. Fermentation occurs with gentle grape pressing, cold skin contact, vacuum pressing, and a low temperature maceration. The entire fermentation process is carefully managed so the wine can preserve all of its delicate and complex aromas. It rests on the lees for 3-4 months, and then further aged in stainless tanks before bottling.
