Varietal spotlight!! 🚨‼️‼️🚨 Moscatel de Alejandra is also know as Moscato di Alexandria in Italy. Maybe you know the grape from your grandmother’s fridge or maybe, like me, it was from the least expensive chug-able wine you could get your hands on. Often misunderstood, Moscato is a very aromatic grape found all over the world. It has a wide range of styles: slightly fizzy, low alcohol Moscato d’Asti, prestigious layered dessert wines from Marsala, or dry and salty like this Spanish version. Always aromatic, this particular bottle is great for summer with notes of lychee, grapefruit, and white flowers. Not sweet at all, this wine is lean and slightly salty wine with great balance and would pair nicely with some fresh seafood. 🦞 or 🦪 maybe?

We are so excited to welcome winemaker Cole Thomas of Madson Wines to pour and discuss their newest releases. The team at Madson has quietly been producing world-class wines from impeccably farmed vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains since 2018. Many of their wines have graced our shelves since the day we opened the shop. Both Mike and Ryan are personally members of the Madson wine club! So this tasting is long overdue.

This is natural wine done right- all vineyards are organically farmed (viticulturists Ken and Abbey are locally renowned masters of regenerative agriculture, as well as being some of the most serious wine geeks I’ve ever met), all fruit is hand picked, all fermentations are native, interventions in the cellar are minimal, and small sulphur additions are only done at bottling. These are serious wines that stand up to the best that California (and France) have to offer.

THIS FRIDAY!
We love Keegan’s wines! They are some of the most popular local wines in the shop, specifically the Pinot Noirs from both Volkmann and Regan Vineyards.

Keegan completed the enology program at UC Davis and continued his education at Mumm in Napa and Church Road Winery in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand before returning home and working his way up to Assistant Winemaker at Testa Rossa. His solo project, Assiduous, is a celebration of the terroir and climate of the Santa Cruz Mountains; minimal intervention, an organic approach, and an eye for elegance make Assiduous wines a memorable experience.

Wine list:
2022 Assiduous Grüner Veltliner ‘Mesa Rio Vineyard’
2022 Assiduous Pinot Gris
2022 Assiduous Chardonnay ‘Regan Vineyard’ 94WE
2022 Assiduous Pinot Noir ‘Volkmann Vineyard’ 95WE
2022 Assiduous Pinot Noir ‘Regan Vineyard’
2023 Assiduous Merlot ‘Kells Vineyard’
2022 Assiduous Malbec ‘Black Ridge Vineyard’

Wine varietal (and region!) spotlight:
This one’s a little more fun- it’s a Nebbiolo, but it’s called “Barolo.” Why? Because Italian wine labels require a bit more thought!
Barolo is a DOCG, or very exclusive region, within the Piedmont region of Italy. To carry the “Barolo” label, wines are required to be made with 100% Nebbiolo grapes, no additions or substitutions.
Barolos are characterized by being one of the bigger, heavier-hitting Italian wines. They are usually made to be aged and are therefore typically in the $50+ range.
If you’re drinking now, we recommend decanting beforehand!

Lambrusco. Just hearing the word elicits an automatic response from me – a sigh, a big grin, my mouth starts watering and I get a sudden, undeniable craving for salumi & cheese. Lambrusco is one of my favorite Italian wines. Heck, it’s one of my favorite wines, period! How can you resist a RED wine that is slightly sparkling AND served cold??

How fun is that?? To celebrate World Lambrusco Day, we’ve put together a tasting of some of our favorites to treat your tastebuds and quench your thirst! Take advantage of this RARE opportunity to taste several Lambruschi side-by-side, so you can put together a selection of fun, festive, fizz for your upcoming get togethers. These wines will add something special to all your parties, BBQ’s and pizza nights! -Mike Guerra, Advanced Sommelier

Meet winemaker/owner/one woman show Faith Armstrong of Onward Wines and taste her lineup of naturally made, sustainably farmed, delicious and unique wines!

Born on a tiny island in British Columbia, Canada, traveling to school in a little boat called the Onward, her journey to winemaking was more of a meander than a straight line. She started in sales and marketing, and then went into production, which led her to UC Davis for some more formal training. Post graduation, she started at Frank Family where she worked her way up to Assistant Winemaker before branching out on her own. Onward’s focus is single-vineyard, site-driven wines from environmentally responsible growers–and, the wines are vibrant. A mother of four and a one woman show, Faith is an absolute force! She is known for making some of the original Pétillant Naturel in California (and for teaching many other winemakers how over the years), and for her elegant and affordable bottlings, from Skin Contact Malvasia, to Zinfandel Nouveau.

Varietal alert 🚨!! Dolcetto (pronounced Doll-Che-toe) translates to ‘little sweet one’ but wines are confusingly tart. Native to Piemonte in northern Italy, it’s usually harvested earlier than other red grapes in the area, Barbera and Nebbiolo. This Dolcetto from Renzo Castella is grown in the village Diano and possesses an impressive purity of fruit and delicate floral undertones while retaining a touch of Italian rusticity & earthiness. Aromas of purple plum, violets, blackberries, roasted almonds, and clove at the onset. Fine tannins and a savory quality balances the acidity and fruit. We love to pop this for a weeknight with some pizza or in this weather, something grilled.

GEMINI TASTING- tonight!
Friday June 7th
It’s Gemini season and Chaney and Lea both happen to be Geminis! They’ll be showcasing eight wines tonight- two very different representations each of four grapes. Represented by the “twins” in astrology, Geminis exhibit dual personalities, which is why this tasting is so two-sided! They say you can never know a Gemini completely..... We’ll tell you what the grapes are, but we won’t tell you the style they’re displaying; you’ll have to find out for yourself! Grapes varietals: Chardonnay, Nebbiolo, Cabernet Franc, and Touriga Nacional

Thursday June 6th

Evan, this one’s for you! Beat the heat with a refreshing Sauvignon Blanc tasting! Sauvignon Blanc is the classic summer wine- we’re of half a mind that it’s what Nancy Sinatra may have been referring to in her hit song “Summer Wine”... see if you can pick up notes of “strawberries, cherries, and an angel’s kiss.”

We’re pouring SB’s in all sorts of styles and from all around the world tonight. We have classic New Zealand styles, elegant French choices, some from the U.S., and even Chile! Come by to be reminded why Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most popular grapes on planet Earth!

Varietal alert!! Barbera (sometimes we slip up with the nickname Barb) is an Italian grape varietal known for its juicy, bramble berry aromas with low tannin and a deep color. Native to Piemonte in Northern Italy, this grape has made a name for itself in California. This version here is grown in the Santa Ynez Valley and has flavors of plum, blackberry, sage and graphite. It’s fresh, lean, and great with food. Winemaker Alison Thomson is behind Lepiane, a tribute to her great grandfather.

Delta wines are among some of the best quality-for-price domestic wines we know! Period. End of story. If you recognize the name, it’s because we featured Delta previously – and folks LOVED their taste, price and environmental commitment* to organizations including the Surfrider Foundation. It’s time to revisit these impressive, delicious wines – along with a couple tasty releases from their sister label, Brick & Mortar.

If you’ve been around the shop lately, you’ve met Lea. She has worked in the restaurant industry for a decade but has now transitioned to the wine side. She’s a lover of old world vino, a fan of “geeky” wine, and is in a constant battle with Ryan over the record player (she doesn’t like the jazzy stuff?!). Lea will be pouring seven of her current favorites in the shop this Friday; come say hi and see how few jazz albums she can manage to play Friday night! 5-7 pm!

Varietal alert! Gewürztraminer is a super expressive German varietal that is a mouthful (both to say and on the palate!) This grape is always aromatic but our favorite expressions (like this one) have some fresh acidity to balance out the fruit and flowers. Tomorrow we’re tasting with who made this delicious wine from Alsace, France. Sharing a border with Germany, wines from this region tend to be fresh due to the cooler climate. This slightly off-dry style is perfectly balanced with aromas of honey, rose petal, apple, lemon, and lychee. Try this with Muenster cheese, roast pork, or a savory tart. ancoravino_losgatos

Varietal alert! Mourvèdre is a French grape most know as a blending component for Rhône GSMs (meaning Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre.) This wine here is %100 Mourvèdre grown in El Dorado County, CA. From the aptly-named ‘Goldbug‘ vineyard, this gorgeous wine is an inky, deep purple that smells like purple things (lilac, boysenberry), dusted with pepper and spices. Tart with some spicy ginger quality in the mouth, the tannins are plush and velvety. We agree with that this is “science as art.”

Wine varietal alert! GrĂźner Veltliner from . This grape is usually found in Austria but is planted in California as well. Grown in the Santa Lucia Highlands, this wine is layered and highly aromatic: white flower, lemon, and spice on the nose. Weighty on the palate with a fresh, long finish. Drink with your summer salad or white fish! We love this awesome wine from one of our favorite local winemakers.

Wine varietal spotlight: Savagnin!
(sah-vahn-yin)
This is an interesting white grape heralding from the Jura region of France. Savagnin famously makes an oxidized version of wine called “vin jeaune” (meaning “yellow wine”), but this version made by Domaine Berthet-Bondet is a classic white wine! Showcasing lees, citrus zest, and some yeast on the nose, the palate finishes with some crunchy green apple, pear, bitter almond, a long salty finish. Best with food!
