🚨New bag alert 🚨
Introducing dayzo coffee] ! Chris Robbins cut his teeth on coffee working multiple barista gigs while also managing world class musicians. Chris has a reverent approach to coffee; his bags showcase all the minute details that make his roasts taste as good as they do. He operates locally in Eagle Rock, and we’re honored to be the first (but certainly not last) retail space to offer dayzo coffee] !

Ok folks. I'm signing off after 5 years.
Thank you all for your loyal support and for the memories. What a ride Virgil Village! Particularly the last few years thru the pandemic - glad we could step up as your local shop.

There's been a market at this location since the 1930s. Really proud to be a part of that legacy and glad to say that even with this latest transition Corner Shop lives on!

Expect to see the new owners at the shop in the coming days if you haven't met them already!

Much love and all the best,

Reza

I know we’ve told this to a few regulars, some of the distributors we work with, and friends of the shop - I’ve joked about it and alluded to it and incorporated this news full - now it’s time to really share it with the public:
Early this Summer, Cornershop was put on the open market and purchased. The new ownership made it clear to me, the manager and main buyer, that they were going to lay off the vast majority of the staff. I have decided to go down with the ship and leave the shop with the rest of the staff* at the end of this month.
I just want to say I appreciate all of the trust and support our customers have given the shop over the years. I’ve truly loved serving this community and I’ll very much miss sharing the little beautiful things I love with all of you. This goofy job has changed my life and I’m forever grateful to you all for enabling that change!
We’ll have a physical and digital tip jar out for the next ten days - all will go directly to the staff who are losing their jobs - and we’ll be running sales for you, our customers that are losing this era of Cornershop. I’ll still be in the neighborhood and would love to see you all at and
With Love,
Patrick

Stemberger Zelen

If you’re anything like us, the rising temperature might have you craving a nice, cold Negroni. If you like approaching your cravings obliquely (as we often do) Stemberger’s Zelen might hit the spot.

This rare, native variety from Karst, Slovenia has its showy “green” notes on full display. Eleven months of skin contact with unpressed berries is followed up with three more days of maceration in used oak.

The result is an intensely refreshing wine loaded with notes flashy citrus oil, bitter herbs and tea like tannins. This wine is a favorite for sipping on hot days with fresh salads or grilled veggies.

Springtime is officially here, and now that we’ve collectively adjusted our machine clocks and acclimated our bioclocks to daylight savings time we can finally get out here and enjoy it with a glass that calls to mind the season’s pleasures: ’s Pinot Gris, a powerfully funky threshold-sitter, with one foot in red and the other in orange.
35 year old vines reach their roots deep into the soil, bringing forth a minerality that recalls the fevered productivity of the spring thaw in the Willamette Valley, a taste of bloody terra cotta and underbrush reaching into the sunshine; floating above that is a taste of the quickening of May flowers, color and aromas to come hidden in their armored buds. Subtle, deep and very much of the earth, this is a true beaut.

“Aecht Schlenkerla’s long been a favorite of mine and this offering from the excellent tank container project (which imports entire shipping cartons filled with lager-temp beer from Europe to be canned in the states) does nothing but strengthen this passion. Die Kreuzen isn’t just a classic Milwaukee hardcore band, it’s the state of maximum fermentation in brewing, when the yeast is at it’s foamy peak and the tank is fit to burst with wild suds. This beer is made with long-lagered, fully mature Helles blended with a fresh batch of their Marzen Aufkräusen, rejuvenating the helles with yeast at the peak of their productivity. The result is gorgeous, smooth and nutty with a beguiling depth competing with ridiculous drinkability.
Prost!”

A fine day for a picnic just down the street. We’re pairing this bottle of Vibriá Surlie with tasty food from our friends at and Corner Shop snacks.

This Macabeo is family-made and organic, bright and sunny, perfect for a beach day as the weather warms up. Notes of tropical fruit are balanced by bright acids. As highly refreshing as it is drinkable!

You know how small talk can suddenly mutate into large talk? One minute you’re trying to pass a little time chatting in the bathroom line and the next thing you know the firmament erodes and you’re p*ering right off the edge of an existential cliff, caught up in a sudden burst of insight into your world-historic position? And you still need to p*e?
Anyway, that happened to me the other night. I told someone I’d just met what I do for work and they responded with “what’s your FAVORITE thing about beer?” and like, I know it was a tactful way to get to know me, and no harm was intended, but the question really hit me on the broad side of my head. There wasn’t a tip-of-the-tongue, shoo-in answer.
I finally found it: Beer allows us to directly experience, with the most sublime of our senses, the continuity of culture. I was thinking of cellador when I said it: their fermenting culture is literally continuous, fed and maintained for over a decade, long enough to sport genetic drift and become its own thing. Their use of California’s abundant agriculture (in this case masumoto farms, lyrical innovators in old-ways organic agriculture) and brewing techniques borrowed from Belgium, create an inseparable whole, a beautiful experience that captures the ineffable qualities of the perfectly ripe peach, sunshine over fields of grain, yeast wafting through the air, the funk and delight of microscopic productivity. Tasting their beer gives us access, even briefly, to a slower world, one of carefully observed and gently bent traditions. This vintage of Slide Down My Cellar Door marks the first anniversary of my rabid support of Cellador’s mission, and I am here to tell you there will be a second, a third, and so forth.
Cheers!

There wasn’t a tip-of-the-tongue, shoo-in answer - half a dozen Simpsons jokes flitted through my brain but that felt like an easier out than I should take, and not everyone raised themselves on the Simpsons-Seinfeld syndication block after school.

“‘I have some Timbo merch.’ Never did I realize that utterance would lead me to imbibe ’s Timbo Pils that was canned the very same day. Needless to say, my Friday peaked earlier than I would prefer, but fresh Mosaic-hopped pilsners wait for no man. As Patrick smiled upon me in his Timbo sweater, my palate was graced by a gentle grassy bite with dank berries throughout the sip, culminating with a ephemerally bittersweet malty finish. 2022 may not be so bad after all.” -Le Roi

Brewed as Highland Park’s house beer, Refresh is a perfect example of a brewer’s lunch beer - simple at first gulp, but with a beguilingly delicate structure upon deeper consideration. Intricately layered grains provide a malt backbone suggesting grilled corn and crispy sesame crackers, with traces of apple and pear throughout. It all resolves in a burst of grassy notes and salinity, lightly evoking kelp and freshcut hay.
This works beautifully with Be U’s Bahn Mi’s, never competing with any of the base flavors but slowly accentuating them, element by element. A perfect lunch, best enjoyed walking up Hoover in against the sunshine.

Cellador’s Witbier rewrites everything I know about wheat ales, taking the soft, floral edged qualities and, through barrel, culture, and adjuncts, amplifying them into a heady bouquet of bergamot orange, perfume sample packets and oolong tea with shadows of allspice and spicy barrel tannins lurking on the edges. Pillowy yet deep, this is a like-with-like pairing with Be Ú’s menu, particularly playing off the popcorn chicken and lemongrass tofu options!

Our Story

Corner Shop brought life back into a little brick building from 1925 and quickly made it the neighborhood’s most convenient spot for high-quality drinks and snacks. We’re no 7-11, but a place where you can find delicious and sustainable groceries. We’re serious about providing the best tasting food we can get our hands on -- it’s what a good neighbor would do. That’s why we use bread from local bakeries and charcuterie imported straight from New York. Plus, with a huge selection of craft beers and wine, we’re truly a next-level bodega. So stop by the corner and grab something fresh -- we’re always here to help you find just what you’ve been looking for.
