Thank you all for the convivencia 🫂

We’re closed for winter break and will re-open Saturday Jan 4th, 9am to 7pm.

May this winter bring rest, nourishment, and a re-organization of the economy around the care and interests of the collective: universal healthcare, universal basic income, access to housing, food, time and life; liberation for all oppressed peoples, lands and sentient beings.

We are grateful for getting to co-create this place with y’all. Getting to practice new ways of being rooted in ancestral wisdom and not the everyday cruelty of robber baron capitalism, with you kin, is a blessing.

However the story of this particular brick and mortar unfolds, we look forward to continue making community and nourishment together.

🥧 Bake Sale with
🗓️ TOMORROW Saturday 12/21
⏰ 10am - 12pm or sell out
📍 El Sereno Greengrocer

🍫 Mole Brownies - made with black cocoa,   black mole, topped with sesame seeds. Deeply chocolatey, chewy, and rich, you can taste chilis and spice at the forefront with heat hitting right at the end 🤤

🧀 Cheddar and Scallion Biscuits - savory, buttery, magical. Eat them on their own, slice them with sweet preserves, or do as one fam did and bring your eggs and sausage patty to the bake sale and make your own breaky sandos on the spot!

🍈Guava & Goat Cheesecake Bars - oh guayaba! oh goat cheese! the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. House made guava jam and guava paste.

Rum Fruit Cakes by the Slice
👵🏾 Inspired by Corrine’s Grandmas Black Cake

Rich, moist, boozy, tons of flavor, and so very pretty. Corrine brought samples to our most recent Nourished Book Club gathering, and they were gone before I could take a picture!

She also shared how she grew up making Black Cake with her Grandma as it’s a tradition across the Caribbean, including Jamaica where her family has roots. Her Grandma decided to change it up a bit, and made her unique version. When Corrine was an adult, and her Grandma had passed, she decided to re-create it. And in true Grandma style … this beloved recipe wasn’t written down.

So Corrine drew on her childhood memory, her Dad’s memory, and Diasporic stories and recipes to make a cake similar to her Grandmas. And then she realized … change was part of the spirit of her Grandma’s Black Cake, of Diaspora and of tradition… and so this offering includes Corrine’s baking genius 🤩💫

El Sereno GreenGrocer and Community Wellness Apothecary invite you to a radically nourishing gathering this Sunday. That the calendaring stars have aligned for these Herbalists availability is a miracle, and we are grateful. This winter season, share the gift of wellness…

🌸 Pachamamita Herbal Maker’s Holiday Market 🌍

🗓️ Sunday 12/15
⏳10am to 3pm
🌿Featuring Beloved & Brilliant Community Apothecaries:

These community Herbalists reflect thousands of years of BIPOC partnership — a creative, evolving relationship with Pachamama — to co-create healing and wellbeing. We are grateful to have been connected with them and their healing through the years in a variety of ways. Summer of Kinfolk Botanica has been GreenGrocer’s resident apothecary since we’ve opened. We’re grateful to fellow Herbalist and Grocerx Shabina for introducing us to Daisy of earlier this year.

Erika and I have been home herbal medicine makers for over a decade, and the vision is that one day El Sereno GreenGrocer shelves are adorned as much with fruit, veg & fungi as with herbal nourishment. A greengrocer in our practice and understanding, is also an apothecary. 🍵🌿🫖

We’d hoped these offerings would be made by us and other community apothecaries such as the ones gathering this Sunday. We trust that some version of this vision will manifest at the right time and place one day.

For now, we hope you join us for this healing market. Replenish your winter home apothecary, gift healing goodness to your beloveds, and connect with these brilliant Earth-medicine makers.

dear beloved comelones,

we’re so grateful for how you’ve shown up and made what we were told was impossible, possible.

we’ve tried wholeheartedly, and while we’re so close to financial sustainability, we’re not there yet. after many attempts to secure bridge funding after our business plans a and b failed, we’ve opted to use the cash we do have to close as ethically as possible.

we don’t want to close, and are here for being connected to resources! we believe in miracles. if you or someone you know can gift or loan 500K at low interest, we’re here to talk!

your go fund me support back in september gave us the capacity & inspiration to go for another round of meetings with banks, non-profit lenders, and network weaving. and still, no bridge funds.

our last day of service will be january 31 2025.

together we made this miracle grow and operate for nearly 2 years. thank you.

IREKUARHIKUA means WAY OF LIFE in the P’urhepecha language. It is the way of life Marlene has practiced throughout her self-care journey that is also a collective care journey. IREKUARHIKUA is a food project ran this badass community-based cocinera, where seasonally inspired nourishment is offered, rooted in ancestral comida casera and corrida; and where much of the produce is grown on the East LA urban farm homestead where Marlene makes home.

Several years ago we were introduced to the life changing flavors and textures of IREKUARHIKUA at our sister site, . wove a community gathering catered by Marlene, and Erika and I melted in the pleasure of this nourishment. Since then, we’ve only ever eaten Marlene’s nourishment at the Garden, where we’d pick up her offerings on a weekend morning to share with fellow land stewards. The ways Marlene brings alive ancestral foodways in all ways of life continues to inspire us.

So come, beloved Comelones. Join us for our first weekend back from break.

Let’s gather to welcome winter and nourish ourselves amongst convivencia, and damn good food. Praise the ancestors and Marlene!

Ángel is a healing artist and co-curator of Sunday’s Bake and Make Sale. She had the vision to make a collective recipe book featuring recipes from any attendee who wants to contribute.

In preparation for Sunday, Ángel has hand bound the book. Now, it awaits the life-nourishing recipes.

So, we invite you to share a beloved recipe! We’d love to hear a bit about why you feel inspired to share it in this context, and/or anything else that you feel significant to share.

There’s two ways to share:

1) via the Padlet link in bio
2) bring the recipe to write directly in the book, or have Ángel add, at Sunday’s event

We have a few ideas of how this book will develop: we will likely digitize it and sell as part of this fundraiser, and several ideas we’ll keep secret for now regarding the actual, tangible collective recipe book. Stay tuned!

SLIDE 1: Intro to Ángel, cultural traditions and lineages of international solidarity that tend to life

SLIDE 2: Invitation to share recipe

SLIDE 3: Padlet instructions!

The illustrated kites adorning the event flier are there on purpose.

For many years, the kite has symbolized defiance, survival, hope and freedom in Gaza and beyond. Also for many years, especially in this last 365 days of genocide, people from many places throughout Earth have crafted kites from cloth or paper, whatever they may have, to fly into the sky messages of witness and solidarity.

In this last year, the increasing visibility of many years of violence unto Palestinian peoples and lands has deepened global conversations and actions around the interconnections of these colonial struggles – from Palestine, Afghanistan, Sudan, DRC, the U.S. Southeast, Tongva Land / Los Angeles and many, many more places.

These are cultural practices: making kites, sharing experiences, wisdom and story so that connections can be made toward building liberated worlds. These are everyday practices that make life possible and meaningful.

This Bake and Make Sale draws on these powers of everyday cultural practices such as making food, baking bread, making connections through conversation, thought & action, nourishing one another, crafting visionary and pragmatic things.

We invite you to gather with us to witness, nourish and connect during this one year mark of deepened genocide. We invite you to gather to raise funds for Healing Our Homeland, a Palestinian women-led grassroots movement distributing aid to people in Gaza and throughout the region.

We are deeply grateful to the makers and bakers contributing. We’re still in the process of confirming a few, so this list isn’t complete!
