Ángel is a healing artist and co-curator of Sunday’s Bake and Make Sale. She had the vision to make a collective recipe book featuring recipes from any attendee who wants to contribute.

In preparation for Sunday, Ángel has hand bound the book. Now, it awaits the life-nourishing recipes.

So, we invite you to share a beloved recipe! We’d love to hear a bit about why you feel inspired to share it in this context, and/or anything else that you feel significant to share.

There’s two ways to share:

1) via the Padlet link in bio
2) bring the recipe to write directly in the book, or have Ángel add, at Sunday’s event

We have a few ideas of how this book will develop: we will likely digitize it and sell as part of this fundraiser, and several ideas we’ll keep secret for now regarding the actual, tangible collective recipe book. Stay tuned!

SLIDE 1: Intro to Ángel, cultural traditions and lineages of international solidarity that tend to life

SLIDE 2: Invitation to share recipe

SLIDE 3: Padlet instructions!

The illustrated kites adorning the event flier are there on purpose.

For many years, the kite has symbolized defiance, survival, hope and freedom in Gaza and beyond. Also for many years, especially in this last 365 days of genocide, people from many places throughout Earth have crafted kites from cloth or paper, whatever they may have, to fly into the sky messages of witness and solidarity.

In this last year, the increasing visibility of many years of violence unto Palestinian peoples and lands has deepened global conversations and actions around the interconnections of these colonial struggles – from Palestine, Afghanistan, Sudan, DRC, the U.S. Southeast, Tongva Land / Los Angeles and many, many more places.

These are cultural practices: making kites, sharing experiences, wisdom and story so that connections can be made toward building liberated worlds. These are everyday practices that make life possible and meaningful.

This Bake and Make Sale draws on these powers of everyday cultural practices such as making food, baking bread, making connections through conversation, thought & action, nourishing one another, crafting visionary and pragmatic things.

We invite you to gather with us to witness, nourish and connect during this one year mark of deepened genocide. We invite you to gather to raise funds for Healing Our Homeland, a Palestinian women-led grassroots movement distributing aid to people in Gaza and throughout the region.

We are deeply grateful to the makers and bakers contributing. We’re still in the process of confirming a few, so this list isn’t complete!

Weekends at the Shop

Alexis Pauline Gumbs , in the vivacious legacy of Audre Lorde, teaches that survival is a promise made in the context of what we are navigating — life-affirming delight, disaster, relationshipping with Earth and every living being human and beyond; it is life in honor of our ancestors, who survive through our breathing, presence and remembering. It is life finding ways despite genocidal forces working against existence.

In this context, we invite you to gather at the Shop this weekend to nourish collective survival. will be here Saturday & Sunday 9am-12pm. You are welcome to gather with us, to drink cafecito and tea — and if you choose it, they adorn it with the heart-balm that is rose.

There will be postcards for Palestine, texting letters for Sudan, and resources from free posters to links examining how the current genocides unfolding in front our eyes are linked, and how those forces are being navigated and dismantled from here to Guatemala; Haiti to Afghanistan, and every place humans and beyond live and die.

While there will be specific resources and actions, this will be a capacious space. There will be blank postcards open for you to create art on, and send to whoever you may want to share them with. We invite you to bring a book to read or sketch in, a journal to write in.

Starting at noon this Saturday, there will be an Earth Day Festival down the street at , the 3rd annual festival hosted by . There will be other events throughout the weekend to honor earth and 4/20, and we invite you to start your day with some cafecito and convivencia at the Shop. Let us nourish ourselves as we share in resources to punch up and share in practices of collective survival.

Have you ever felt the hug, connection & presence that a cup of tea can offer? Has a cup of tea rejuvenated you, helping you face a day of work or a challenge? Have you experienced deep conversation or giggles over a cup o’ tea?

If so, then this weekend at the shop is for you
If not, then this weekend at the shop is *also* for you

We’re so very pleased to welcome Masalawali for a pop up this Saturday & Sunday, 9AM-12PM. Masalawali is a Q***r, Desi-owned & operated pop-up chai shop & collective liberation space dedicated to decolonizing South Asian traditions thru offering up damn good cups of chai…& thru offering up space for cultivating solidarity.

On the menu:

☕ , classic masala chai made with loose black tea steeped with fresh & ground ginger, cloves, fennel, cardamom, black pepper & WAY less cinnamon than corporate chai tea lattes

🥥The LA Special, vegan/dairy free, GF, tree-nut free & keto-friendly masala chai blended with coconut milk

😋Naasto (Snacks in Gujarati), mix of sweet & savory snacks to dip, devour & bring out the best flavors in your chai (GF & Vegan options)

I’m drawn to the ways Bijal, the Founder, is contextualizing masala chai. For instance, LA is home to the 5th largest concentration of South Asians & South Asian Americans in the US, yet there are no genuine chai shops. ¿Por qué?

Another example: in the US, many without regard for chai’s cultural roots & present practices have “discovered” chai, then appropriated it as either a bland, stale tea mix or syurpy too-sweet situation, robbing South Asian cultural signifiers to market & sell “chai tea lattes,” drinks ripped from their vital geographies, peoples, history, culture…& FLAVOR!

Context can support understanding, relationship & co-creation of caring power within & across groups harmed by oppressions. In this context, making & pouring tasty cups of chai means Bijal is also dedicated to cultivating spaces of nourishment & solidarity for South Asian & other communities harmed by colonial forces.

Come, have a cup of tea.
Welcome to Masalawali Weekend at the Greengrocer.
