Have you ever felt the hug, connection & presence that a cup of tea can offer? Has a cup of tea rejuvenated you, helping you face a day of work or a challenge? Have you experienced deep conversation or giggles over a cup o’ tea?
If so, then this weekend at the shop is for you
If not, then this weekend at the shop is *also* for you
We’re so very pleased to welcome Masalawali for a pop up this Saturday & Sunday, 9AM-12PM. Masalawali is a Q***r, Desi-owned & operated pop-up chai shop & collective liberation space dedicated to decolonizing South Asian traditions thru offering up damn good cups of chai…& thru offering up space for cultivating solidarity.
On the menu:
☕ , classic masala chai made with loose black tea steeped with fresh & ground ginger, cloves, fennel, cardamom, black pepper & WAY less cinnamon than corporate chai tea lattes
🥥The LA Special, vegan/dairy free, GF, tree-nut free & keto-friendly masala chai blended with coconut milk
😋Naasto (Snacks in Gujarati), mix of sweet & savory snacks to dip, devour & bring out the best flavors in your chai (GF & Vegan options)
I’m drawn to the ways Bijal, the Founder, is contextualizing masala chai. For instance, LA is home to the 5th largest concentration of South Asians & South Asian Americans in the US, yet there are no genuine chai shops. ¿Por qué?
Another example: in the US, many without regard for chai’s cultural roots & present practices have “discovered” chai, then appropriated it as either a bland, stale tea mix or syurpy too-sweet situation, robbing South Asian cultural signifiers to market & sell “chai tea lattes,” drinks ripped from their vital geographies, peoples, history, culture…& FLAVOR!
Context can support understanding, relationship & co-creation of caring power within & across groups harmed by oppressions. In this context, making & pouring tasty cups of chai means Bijal is also dedicated to cultivating spaces of nourishment & solidarity for South Asian & other communities harmed by colonial forces.
Come, have a cup of tea.
Welcome to Masalawali Weekend at the Greengrocer.
