You all snailed it! 🐌 This is a mid century escargot set!
French cooking has always been popular in Western society, but it really took off in the 1950s and 1960s. Julia Child introduced French cooking to domestic audiences in 1961 with her cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking. However, escargot still seems to be one of those dishes that is seen as exotic to American foodies. What do you think?

You all knew exactly what this one was! It is a Victorian era inkwell!
An inkwell is a small container used to house ink for the purpose of writing. The first inkwells are believed to have been invented by the ancient Egyptians thousands of years ago! They were made in a plate of materials, such as stone, bone, glass, and many forms of metal.
Inkwells were still used even after the invention of the fountain pen as a place to refill the pen’s ink reservoir, but fell completely out of use by the invention of the ballpoint pen in the 1940s.
Do you have an inkwell? Let me know!

Do you like atomic mid century style? I sure do! ✨
Founded in 1945 by George Stanford, Stanford Art Pottery of Sebring, Ohio has many great examples of mid century ceramics. You may already know them by their adorable corn themed dinnerware collection! 🌽
Tragically, a catastrophic fire destroyed the Stanford Art factory in 1961, ending their production of pottery. They sold through their remaining backstock of products and went fully out of business by the mid 60s. A sad end to a creative business.
Do you like these dives into vintage history? Let me know!

Here is the revel from this week’s “What is it?” Wednesday! You all answered a year long question for me. The image depicted on the front of this mug is a group of chestnuts in their husks!
In the 19th century horse-chestnut trees were planted on top of beer cellars to protect the beer buried underneath from the hot sun. The shallow roots of the tree didn’t damage the cellars, and the trees leaves provided shade for the ground, and for the brewers.
Eventually, it became common to gather together under the chestnut trees to drink cool beer together and eat simple foods. Beer gardens exist all over the world today, and are still shaded by chestnut trees!
This rare Lenox Belleek mug would have been in production during the time of the “beer garden’s” inception, and may have been used at a beer garden back then! What a cool piece of history!
Have you ever been to a beer garden? Or tired birra alle castagne (chestnut beer)? Let me know!

Happy Wednesday, everyone! I hope your week is going well. ❤️
We have a bit of a mystery on our hands. Today we are looking at a mug with some kind of plant/fruit/seed motif on the front. I can’t figure out what it is depicting. I thought it might be hops but it doesn’t look quite right.🤔
Do you have any ideas?? Please leave them in the comments!

It’s time for the reveal for last week’s “What Is It?” Wednesday! This little amber fish dish was the start of our journey here at Sugar Maple, but it has a long history!
The “Greentown” Dolphin covered dish was designed by glassmaker Charles E. Beam, who had extensive experience in glass factories before joining the Indiana Tumbler and Goblet Company in about 1897. Beam won first prize in a glassware design contest held by the National Glass Company in 1900, earning $500 for his winning design! His design was then produced at the National’s McKee and Brothers Glass Works in Jeannette, PA in 1901.
The dish would later be reproduced between the 1950s and 1970s by The Kemple Glass Works and the St Clair Glass Co. Our dish is most likely a mid century reproduction.
Did you like learning about this piece’s history? Let me know! ❤️
Happy Wednesday, everyone! ☀️
Let me introduce you to our beloved amber fish dish! 🐟
My mom, Cindy inherited this dish from her grandmother after she passed away.
It has always carried a tradition of holding Swedish fish for candy craving grandchildren, but it wasn’t always a candy dish! 🍬🍭This piece of amber glass had a special purpose.
Can you guess what it was used for? When do you think it was first made, and when was it reproduced? Leave your answer in the comments! ❤️
