Update: Hernandez is now in custody.
During the early morning hours of Saturday November 4, 2023 the residents of 1577 County Road 245 were the victims of a home invasion. A male and a female entered the home with the intent to commit a robbery. During the crime Dustin Grimes was fatally shot in his bedroom while trying to protect his wife. After the murder, the offenders proceeded to steal from the residence and kidnapped his wife before fleeing the scene of the crime.
Some time after this Ms. Grimes managed to escape her captors while they were trying to force her to withdraw money from an ATM in the East Lawrence Area. Seeing the opportunity to escape she ran for her life and found refuge in a nearby convenience store where she was able to call Law Enforcement.
Lawrence Counties Deputies and Moulton Police Officers arrived at the home on County Road 245 where they discovered Dustin Grimes deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.
Law Enforcement, with the help of Ms Grimes were able identify two suspects and obtained
Warrants for Murder, Robbery and Kidnapping.
Auburn Renee Moore of New Hope, Alabama and Jordan Cesar Hernandez of Decatur, AL. The identity of a third person that was involved is being withheld at this time for investigative purposes.
Moore (not pictured at time of this release) was arrested Saturday night in Decatur.
At this time, Hernandez (pictured) is still at large and he should be considered armed and dangerous.
This is still an ongoing investigation.
Sheriff Sanders would like to acknowledge Ms Grimes’ quick thinking and decisive action that led to her escape. Sanders also expresses sincere thanks to the Moulton Police Department and the ALEA State Bureau of Investigation for their assistance regarding the investigation. Additionally, He thanks the Decatur Police Department and the Morgan County Sheriff's Office SWAT team who assisted Lawrence County Investigators and the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office SWAT in apprehending Moore.
All persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
