Chianti used to be all tart and edgy and it has evolved into something that has as much capacity to satisfy as any of the finest Reds in the world. This week we were fortunate to score a deep discount on the 92 Point 2021 vintage of Nipazzano from the renowned Italian producer, Frescobaldi. The nose offers a lush perfume of blue flowers, plum skins, cedar, and cocoa. Frescobaldi doesn’t tell us what the blend is but it’s certainly not all Sangiovese. Darker tones persist on the entry with a wonderful spread of fruit that layers blackberries and black cherries atop lifted, Sangiovese-oriented, notes of raspberry puree and kirsch liqueur. Fine grained tannin encircles appealing toasted walnut, anise, and baking chocolate giving the back of the palate a real sense of volume and substance as well as conveying the kind of stature that makes it really feel worthy of being called a Riserva. I love wines that punch above their weight and this is a textbook example of what I’m always hunting for in terms of that quality / value intersection. You guys are going to be thrilled with this one! Grab a half case.
Food Pairing:
This delicious Chianti Rufina Riserva is tailor made for pairing with classic Italian dishes. I made an old school classic the other day that would have been perfect for this impressive Red, chicken parmesan. I make a really simple homemade red sauce that goes on top of those perfectly pan fried, parmesan and panko crusted chicken cutlets and then topped with fresh mozzarella before finishing briefly under the broiler to get that ooey gooey lovin’ going on. It’s not exactly a light dish but it is pretty darn satisfying and it is going to crush with this wine!
