There’s a reason that Cabernet is the king of Red wine grapes. When Cab is right it is more delicious than darn near anything. This week we have the privilege of offering you a screaming deal on a 95 Point Cabernet that is as right as it can be. While it’s true that Contadina is the entry level wine in Burgess Cellars’ Cab lineup, the quality of this 2017 vintage is absolutely remarkable. The nose bursts from the glass with enticing scents of Luxardo syrup, cigar humidor, rose water, grilled herbs, and pencil shavings. Every swirl and sniff reveals a new layer of aromatic complexity and really does a nice job of setting the stage for good things to come on the palate. The entry delivers the kind of wonderfully ripe fruit that we all crave with awesome raspberry puree, kirsch liqueur, and crushed cherries dancing in perfect harmony. As the wine moves from the entry to the finish, toasty oak serves to add some density as well as notes of cola, allspice, and warm brown sugar to all that exuberant fruit. The finish offers the kind of symmetry that great wines must have with lingering layers of humble earth, fine grained tannin, sweet vanilla, and strawberry liqueur all oscillating into and out of perception with each passing sip. What a pleasure it is to drink a wine of this quality!
