The wines of Crete are incredible! Tonight we pour Greek wine as a benefit for Iliana, a winemaker who lost all of her vineyards in a recent forest fire.

New Zealand is a wealth of wines, from meaty Syrah in the north, to soul stirring Pinot Noir around Canterbury.

In the south region of Central Otago, most vines sit under a hole in the ozone layer, and the extra UV light gives the red grapes an almost purple hue.

Near Christchurch, an ancient tar pit holds fossils of giant extinct birds (with the wingspan of a bus!). New Zealand’s birds are still important, and just before the harvest most vineyards are netted to keep the birds from eating the grapes.

In Hawke’s Bay, an old river diverted course, leaving a ribbon of large river stones, on which some Bordeaux-style blends grow.

And there is the magic Chenin Blanc grown in Gisborne…

The Fiano grape variety is originally from Campania (where Pompeii is located). Fiano is a unique grape that has a rich, lush texture, an aroma similar to pears and citrus, and it pairs incredibly with seafood, also pasta with creamy sauces.
