STEPHANE USSEGLIO
LES AMANDIERS
VIN DE FRANCE

The tradition of winemaking in Stéphane Usseglio’s family goes back to his grandfather, Francis, who moved to Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Italy in 1931 and created what is now Domaine Pierre Usseglio. Stéphane’s father, Raymond, founded his own estate in 1964, and Stéphane took charge in 2004.

Richer than a Côtes-du-Rhône, this is a stunning value from a family whose name is synonymous with excellence in Châteauneuf, where they’ve been making top-tier wines for 75 years. This wine is crafted from 100% organically certified estate fruit—mostly Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre—grown chiefly in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and family sites in Lirac and the Côtes-du-Rhône. If the story ended there, this wine would qualify as a straightforward Côtes-du-Rhône. But winemaker Stéphane Usseglio went rogue by tapping one of the family’s plots outside the Côtes-du-Rhône and also adding a tiny bit of supple Merlot to the blend. That’s why this bottle bears a vin de France label. And to throw off convention completely, the wine is not vintage-labeled, although 100% of it came from 2021.

Deep ruby in appearance, with brooding purple and blue near the concentrated center. Intense aromas of black and red berries, along with rich tones of thyme, primrose, and baking spices. Well-integrated tannins are balanced by lively acidity on the palate. Flavors of black raspberry, fresh strawberries, and deep spice notes persist sip after sip. Drink now–2027.

PICK OF THE WEEK

CELLERS CAN BLAU
BLAU RED WINE
MONTSANT, 2021

Located south of Barcelona in El Molar, Tarragona, Cellers Can Blau—a solar-powered winery—is the Gil Family’s most distinctive project in terms of varietals and soil types. Cellers Can Blau only produces three red blends, all sourced from their estate vineyards. The grapes are dry farmed, without any pesticides or herbicides. The resulting wines are complex, with notable mineral characteristics, due in large part to the remarkable slate soils that make this area unique.

Cellers Can Blau has 86 acres of vineyards planted on the sloping hillside of the Sierra de Montsant, at an altitude of 2,000 feet. The vines are on average 40-years-old, and consist of just three varietals: Mazuelo—or Cariñena (Carignan), Garnacha (Grenache), and Syrah. Each is planted in soils to which they best adapt, naturally enhancing the personality of each grape. The Carignan is planted in sandy and clay soils; the Garnacha is planted in slate soils (known locally as llicorella), and the Syrah—in limestone soils.

Vivid garnet color. Rich scents of dark berry compote and baking spices. The palate is medium bodied with flavors of fresh blackberry, blueberry and black raspberry fruit. Well-balanced with fresh, fruity acidity and softly polished tannins. The finish is long, and fruit laced with a touch of exotic spice. 50% Carinena, 25% Grenache, 25% Syrah

PICK OF THE WEEK

LADEIRAS DO XIL
GABA DO XIL TINTO 2019

Ladeiras do Xil is named for the hillsides along the Sil River (literally “slopes of the Sil”), which, along with the Miño River, is the lifeblood of the Ourense province, including the Valdeorras and Ribeira Sacra wine regions. Ladeiras do Xil produces a highly-coveted collection of extremely low-production, single-vineyard grand cru red wines: Valbuxán, As Caborcas, Falcoeira, and O Diviso, along with two white wines: Branco de Santa Cruz and Falcoeira Branco. All are field blends of indigenous grape varietals reflecting the purity and transcendence of one of the most exceptional terroirs in Europe. Ladeiras do Xil is a life’s project to recover and vindicate the exceptional sites along the Sil and Bibei rivers, uncovering their grand cru potential.

The pioneering duo of Pablo Eguzkiza and Telmo Rodríguez started working in the Val do Bibei in 2002. Recognizing the potential to make world-class wines in this historic valley, they began a project restoring vineyards that would take more than a decade to come to fruition.

This is a young, unoaked Mencía with 13.44% alcohol that fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, where it matured for 12 months before bottling. It’s intensely aromatic and expressive, varietal and with the wild rusticity of the zone. The palate is medium-bodied, with very fine tannins and a soft mouthfeel.
