GAINEY VINEYARD
SAUVIGNON BLANC
SANTA YNEZ, 2023

In 1962 the Gainey family purchased 1,800 acres of undeveloped land stretching across the eastern end of Santa Ynez Valley. Within a year, they started a cattle operation and converted 600 acres into farmland for vegetables, fruit, flowers, and hay crops that have sustained the family for generations. They eventually planted 50 acres of grapevines, nurturing a dream he had of one day producing a Gainey family wine.

Gainey’s three ranches are located in two of Santa Barbara County’s most esteemed appellations: the Santa Ynez Valley and the Sta. Rita Hills. Each ranch offers a unique combination of soil types, microclimate, sun exposure and grape varieties, ensuring great complexity in their wines. They grow warm climate varieties at Gainey’s Home Ranch in the warmer, eastern end of Santa Ynez Valley and cool climate varieties at their Evan’s Ranch and Rancho Esperanza in the cool, marine-influenced Sta. Rita Hills appellation. All three ranches yield grapes of exceptional character, allowing Gainey to craft 100% estate-grown wines.

Crafted entirely from grapes grown at the warm climate Home Ranch in the eastern Santa Ynez Valley, the Estate Grown Sauvignon Blanc boasts bright citrus, honeydew melon, mineral and subtle herb aromas. On the palate, the wine is rich, mouthwatering and beautifully structured, with vibrant grapefruit, melon and guava flavors culminating in a long, crisp finish invigorated by zesty citrus, spice and mineral tones.

SALEM WINE CO.
PINOT NOIR
SEVEN SPRINGS

Salem Wine Company is a second label produced by Evening Land Vineyards. The intention behind the project is to make wines that are approachable both in terms of flavor profile and price point. There are no shortcuts or compromises in production however, as all the fruit for their 2023 Eola Amity Hills Pinot Noir comes from Evening Land’s historic estate vineyard, Seven Springs Vineyard. Similarly, the fruit is handled with the same care in the winery as wines that are bottled under the Evening Land label.

Seven Springs is farmed biodynamically by the Evening Land team, and the fruit for this cuvee comes primarily from east facing blocks. Though it is over 90% Pinot Noir, there is a touch of Gamay included, giving it a bit of fruitful exuberance and generosity.

Cranberry-ruby in the glass, this is a wine of lifted fruit and flowers; Morello cherry, blood orange, hibiscus and fresh raspberry come to mind. Fresh, light-bodied, a flash of spice on the palate adds zip to what is an immensely drinkable wine with a polished finish. There is no hiding the energy of the cool climate Eola-Amity Hills here.

For all the garbage, head straight here

🗑️ 🗑️ 🗑️ 🗑️ 🗑️ 🗑️ 🗑️ 🗑️ 🗑️ 🗑️ 🗑️

Pro tip: what’s pictured, isn’t what they want you to buy. They will bend over backwards to make sure you don’t buy them. They will do everything they can to push you towards their “import direct” and “winery direct” wines.

They are a $6+ BILLION company & you don’t make money in this industry by selling things at, barely above, or below cost.

You also don’t make money, in a 20%-30% GM industry, by giving away 33.3% when you spend $60, or 40% when you spend $100.

They’re smarter than that. They’re just banking on the fact that you fall for their tricks.

When they sell you “a wine you can’t get anywhere else”, it’s because they use their Goliath size to work down wineries/importers/distributors to take less margin so they can take all the margin.

All that profit goes back to the Trone brothers with corporate offices in MD & FL. (Google David & Robert Trone).

This is a PSA, not just for us, it’s for all your locally owned & operated shops.

We are all

PICK OF THE WEEK - a shop favorite.

BODEGAS ATALAYA ‘LAYA’
ALMANSA, SPAIN

The Bodegas Atalaya Winery is a relatively new project within the Gil Family Group. It is located in the Almansa D.O, east of Albacete Province among Valencia, Alicante and Murcia, in the transit zone between the Castilian Plateau and the Mediterranean Sea. The winery and vineyards are located 3 kilometers north of Almansa at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level. The soils here consist mainly of limestone. The predominant grape varieties are Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouchet), a variety native to the area, and Monastrell (also known as Mataró or Mourvèdre).

Laya comes from the younger vines on the Atalaya estate, it’s a powerful wine with muscular tannins and luscious fruits. The 2022 is 70% Garnacha Tintorera and 30% Monastrell, fermented in steel and aged for 4 months in French oak. It’s an absolutely fabulous wine for its bargain price point and a perennial customer favorite. Dense, savory and rich. Intensely colored with aromas of brooding black fruits, licorice, espresso, and pepper. The medium-to-full palate flashes brambly blackberries, raspberry, vanilla & dried potpourri herbs.

🍾 is not inexpensive, and there is a reason for that. It’s a very special place & the wines that come from there are special. This we invite you to TRY this small production Grand Cru Champagne for just $35 (regular retail is $50+).

Jean Lallement is an estate of just 4 hectares, or almost 10 acres, split between Verzeney and Verzy. Lallement’s vineyards are about 80% Pinot Noir & 20% Chardonnay.

Moet & Chandon is said to produce nearly 2 million cases annually. Clicquot isn’t far behind. Jean Lallement ekes out just 1,700 cases of estate-grown Champagne per year 👀

PICK OF THE WEEK

CHATEAU JOUANIN
CASTILLON - COTES DU BORDEAUX

Current owner Georges Taix’s father came from Béziers, in the Languedoc, to settle in Bordeaux. He started a machinery company, and bought Chateau Jouanin as his residence, using the vineyard and winemaking as his hobby. Today, Georges continues to run his father’s company, and with his wife and son Pierre, also manages the winery.

Côtes de Castillon is located due east of St. Emilion and south of Fronsac and is a large appellation with 2,832 hectares under vine. The appellation includes 9 communes with close to 350 growers inhabiting the appellation, but around 100 of them work with local cooperatives. The finest terroir is located on the plateau with large deposits of limestone and clay soils. Further down the slopes, you find more clay, gravel and sand. On the plateau, the soils are like that which you find in some of the best St. Emilion terroirs.

This blend of 90% Merlot & 10% Cabernet Franc has everything you could ever ask of an entry level Bordeaux—deeply colored with lovely red & black cherry and plummy fruit; some savory wood spice & creamy vanilla; medium-to-full in body, silky smooth in texture with just enough tannin clinging to the lengthy finish. This is a great entry into Bordeaux & with a couple years of bottle age on it, is in a really great spot right now.
