We taste 1000s of wines each year. This is THE BEST red wine, under $40 retail, that I have personally tasted this year.

After success in both Napa Valley (Revana Family Vineyard) and the Willamette Valley (Alexana Vineyards & Winery), Dr. Madaiah Revana sought out to extend his portfolio of terroir driven, vineyard specific wines to the southern hemisphere. After visiting the Uco Valley in 2008, he discovered untapped potential for world class wines. With surgical precision, and a quality driven philosophy, he continues to produce inspiring wines from inspiring landscapes.

This 100% Cabernet Franc comes from a single block within the estate vineyards at the foot of the Andes Mountains. At more than 3,800’ above sea level, the vineyards benefit from these deeply alluvial lands with abundant solar exposure. This variety, after Malbec, is the one that has evolved best in the last five years. The winemaking team strives to obtain varietal typicity with this high-altitude Cabernet Franc - complex and well structured, with elegant tannins and the perfect balance of tannin from 15 months aging in French oak barrels.

This vintage displays a concentrated aroma of jam, red peppers, and to***co, while having well-structured, full-bodied notes on the palate. While it is a big, big wine, it has a real sense of elegance – the iron fist in a silk glove – type of feeling. The finish goes on forever.

Almost 90 years after its founding, Maison Gabriel Meffre has evolved since its beginnings as a small family business of just ten hectares of vines. Founded by Gabriel Meffre & his wife in 1936, its rise to the status of ‘Négociant-Eleveur’ in Gigondas has been nothing short of spectacular. Now, with over 800 hectares of vineyards, they have gradually become the largest grower-producer of AOC Rhone wines.

A blend of 60% Grenache & 40% Syrah, the 2020 shows a dark crimson color (deeper than most CdR) that leads to aromas of black fruits, brushy herbs & spices. The palate has some real depth to it, flashing flavors of ripe black cherries, stewed plums & wild berries. Medium in body, the darker fruit flavors are polished by soft tannins & notes of white pepper, grilled rosemary & sage. We tasted this & then bought every single bottle we could get our hands on. You might want to do the same - $10 doesn’t get much better than this.

VERA DE ESTENAS, BOBAL
UTIEL REQUENA, SPAIN

Southeastern Spain’s Utiel-Requena is not a D.O. one would usually associate with classically structured wines of balance and nuance, mostly due to the “quantity-over-quality” mentality that has afflicted Southern Spain, and specifically the Bobal grape. With 90,000 hectares under vine, Bobal is the third most planted grape variety in all of Spain. Recently, a handful of quality-minded growers, using artisanal farming and vinification, are producing highly individual wines with true complexity.

Founded in 1945 by Francisco Martinez Bermell, Vera de Estenas has been crafting wines from their 47 hectares of estate fruit since their inception.

This 100% Bobal is fermented in concrete tanks and old American barrels. This medium bodied red shows a beautiful intense dark cherry color. Notes of dark fruit and plum with some herbaceousness. Medium soft tannins and medium acidity. A very versatile wine and an excellent value.

SANCERRE ROSÉ

Wine grapes have been grown on the estate since 1789. Before the 1960s, however, the wine was consumed only by the family itself or shared with good friends.

Made up of 30 parcels of vines with an average age of 15 years. Terroir plays a key role at this estate. Michel, Philippe and Benoît Girard’s vines are planted on each of Sancerre’s three different soil types: Terres Blanches (clay and limestone), Caillottes (chalky limestone) and Silex (flint). The brothers favor judicious blending of the separately vinified cuvées to create wines with real complexity and balance.

A textbook example of finely wrought Sancerre rosé, this is hard to keep your hands off, but keep in mind that it will age effortlessly for numerous years. (Don’t believe the myth about the ageability of rosé; especially Pinot Noir rosés from northern France. They are often even better the year following their release.) A short maceration on the skins here typically laces the wine’s charming but deeply layered nose with the essence of elegant green citrus, flint, pink rose, passion fruit, and fresh green herbs. There is a lovely savory note that adds a little extra complexity and tension in your rosé.
