Thanks to everyone who who came out to support our Spanish wine and tapas pairing on Wednesday eve.

We have two more events on the calendar scheduled over the next couple of weeks. Join us this upcoming Thursday (10/13), for our skin-contact white “orange wine” class and our second installment of pairings on 10/19.

See information on each event below for details.

Join us on October 13th to explore the world of skin-contact whites a.k.a. orange wine. We will help you understand the viticulture and winemaking techniques of producers who’ve specialized in skin-contact way before orange wine became in vogue. Whether you’re a fan of the rustic or sleek style, or simply want to demystify “orange wine”, this is a great opportunity to learn about and taste wines from producers who are focused on making really great wine and unwittingly at the center of this movement.

A Taste of the Pacific Northwest with
We are excited to announce the second pairing in collaboration with Scale! Join us on October 19 at Scale Fish Market for a pairing of wines and seafood from the Pacific Northwest! We will feature four different wine pairings congruent with regionally inspired ingredients from Oregon and Washington. There will be two different time slots running from 6:30-7:30pm and 8:00-9:00pm. Our first pairing in the series sold out quickly, grab your tickets today!
 
*This event will be standing with countertop space to use. If a seat is required for personal reasons please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate.

Mijenta Anejo Gran Reserva Tequila is aged 18 months in Acacia, American oak, cherry and French oak. It is a high quality tequila, with notes of chocolate, to***co, dried fruits, and spices. You definitely sense the caramelized agave on the palate, but not dominating in the way some Gran Reserva Anejos can get. All the same, it has a long and smooth finish. This is definitely a staff favorite here at the shop. It goes without saying, but goes better with saying that the packaging is also stunning!

The ethos of Mary Taylor’s wines is to make lesser-known European regions and varietals accessible to the public. I can honestly say after meeting Mary during a tasting here at the shop, I was taken aback by her authenticity, encyclopedic knowledge of all things wine and humility. Since then, her project to source grapes from growers, who make distinctive wines from their respective villages, has grown tremendously and garnered a national presence in wine shops across the country. Sometimes, “expanding the brand” equates to cutting corners and bringing an inferior product to the market; however, Mary is vigilantly attentive to her vision of bottling honest wines with the farmer in mind while adhering to regional and local traditions – as a result, her wines truly evoke a sense of place. New to the shop is the dry, full bodied Macabeo, from the La Mancha DO in Spain. This is a collaboration with Bodegas Martinez Saez which is an independent, multi-generational, family owned farm with a winery.

Pierre-Vincent Girardin is no doubt a rising star in Burgundy. His first vintage in 2017 was a major success and since then the cuvees have only rapidly improved. Pierre Vincent is the son of the famed Vicent Girardin, but make no mistake Pierre’s project is singular and unique. Most of his whites are from a Mersault estate, which are terroir driven and highlight the mineral character of their respective villages — this is in part to finding good-quality oak barrels and being judicious with the amount of oak he’s imparting to his wines in the cellar. In addition, he is producing silky, elegant mineral driven reds from Aloxe-Corton, Beaune, Pommard, and Volnay. Here we have the 2019 Corton Le Clos du Roi Grand Cru which is delicate and beautifully balanced from limestone terroirs, and yields a pure and elegant style of Pinot Noir.

When it comes to cabernet sauvignon from Napa (or California at large) there’s a prevailing industry sentiment that there are wines from Dunn and Corison (which are no doubt elegant and age-worthy wines) vs. everyone else (sadly an overwhelming majority) that’s not using such a deft hand in the vineyard or cellar. Consequently, public perception/consumption of most cabernet from California equates to massed produced, oaky, fruit bombs on steroids lacking structure and depth; however, the wines from , a grower who truly loves and cares about winemaking, defy that notion. At 12.5% abv, the 2018 Massa Vineyard cabernet sauvignon, from the Carmel Valley AVA, is a high toned, polished and an elegantly structured expression of cabernet sauvignon done with a light hand, which is drinking beautifully right now but will also be great in the long haul.

We love all of the wines from Arpepe and stock them on the shelf year-round. We are featuring their “Rosso di Vatellina” as our wine of the month because this nebbiolo from Lombardy is pretty, perfumed and delicate (though not lacking in density or length) which is perfect for grilling during the summer months, but lean enough to be drunk on its own.

The Barrell Private Release Series is a project in detailed blending on a scale small enough to allow extreme precision.

The Private Release Series lets us exercise our blending expertise while maintaining a single barrel-like scale controlled entirely by hand and by palate. Our goal is always to maximize the best attributes of each component. Every ounce of every ingredient changes the overall character of these blends, as does the barrel that each one is aged in. For that reason, these barrels take months to polish and perfect. While we may be able to replicate the recipe for these releases, the unique nature of each ingredient and the barrel they are married in makes every bottling singularly special.

Each release of our Private Release Whiskey is a unique blend of whiskeys. Once created, these blends are married in single casks, many of which were previously used for other spirits and/or wines. Each Private Release Whiskey series has slightly different base whiskey and is entered into a finishing cask at a different time.
