FENTON LAKE IS...now open for ice fishing effective Friday, January 5, 2024. The ice has been deemed thick enough and safe for ice fishing and was stocked most recently on Wednesday, January 3rd with 800 rainbow trout. The state park is open every day from 7:00 am till 6:00 pm for dayuse and the five electrical sites are open for overnight camping throughout the winter by reservation only.

Also, please be aware, that all forest roads are now closed and gated for the season to all vehicular use.
Those same roads are available for recreational use if accessed via foot, ski, snow shoes or snow machine.

STATE OF THE FOREST...December 5, 2023.
All forest roads will remain open through the end of the year for all recreational use. Whether you are camping, wood gathering or looking for that perfect tree, please be prepared for snowy, icy conditions on the forest roads. Highways 4 and 126 are free of snow and ice...for now.

All forest service campgounds are now closed for the season except for Vista Linda Campground off hwy 4 south of the Village of Jemez Springs. (open year-round, first come, first served). Fenton Lake State Park is also open year-round. The five electrical sites remain open throughout the winter and are available by reservation only.

The lake is currently closed to all fishing, as there is a thin layer of ice completely covering the lake. Too thick for fishing, too thin for ice fishing. We'll keep you posted on the ice thickness.

All rivers throughout the Jemez are now covered with ice...and snow, making for difficult fishing. The Jemez River south from Battleship Rock and below the village is the exception in that it remains generally ice free and is stocked consistently throughout the winter. This is a wonderful winter time fishing opportunity.

Amanda's and Andy's are open everyday of the year except Christmas. Stop on in for a cup of hot chocolate or a box of worms...or just to say hi. We'd love to see you.

Please share.

THE FIRST EVER FENTON LAKE...fall fishing derby has been scheduled for Saturday, October 21, 2023. Registration begins at 7:00 AM at the boat launch area and the entry fee is $10 per person. The contest ends at 2:00 PM, at which time derby prizes will be awarded.

There are $1000 in prize packages from Cabela's, Amanda's Country Store and Hidden Valley Sporting Goods, highlighted by a $400 gift card from Cabela's as the grand prize for the largest fish taken.

Fenton Lake was stocked on August 28th with 500 Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout in the 18-to-30-inch range (brood fish from the Seven Springs Hatchery) and most recently on October 6th with 2200 catchable sized Rainbows. Word is that another 2000 fish will be stocked next week prior to the derby.

The weather should be great, and the fish will be plentiful. Mark your calendars and come on out for a fun and rewarding experience.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of Fenton Lake (FOFL), which is a non-profit, volunteer organization whose mission is to raise funds for the improvement of the visitor experience at Fenton Lake State Park. All proceeds from this event will be used for this purpose.

Please share this post with all of your fisher friends.

FOREST ROAD 376...is now open from top to bottom.
Effective Wednesday, May 10th FR 376 is open from Gilman Tunnels all the way to its junction with State Highway 126. North from 126 to San Antonio Hot Spring remains closed to vehicular traffic until July 1st. Additionally, FR 378 (Barley Canyon) is now open.
Please be responsible with your campfires and trash.
Please share this much anticipated news.

FOREST UPDATE...as of May 3rd. Forest roads 10, 280 and 289 (all on the eastern side of the district) are open for all recreational use. FR 144 is also now open but FR376, 378 and 314 remain closed.

All forest service campgounds within the Jemez Ranger District will remain closed until May 15th, the only exception being Vista Linda Campground ( first come first served) south of the Village of Jemez Springs on Hwy 4. All forest service picnic areas will remain closed until May 15th. Fenton Lake State Park is open for fishing, picnics and all day use. The five electrical campsites are open by reservation only. All other camping loops (reservation only as well) are closed until May 15th.

Fishing opportunities are expanding as spring run-off begins to subside. Fenton Lake, Rio Cebolla, Rio San Antonio and the Kid's Pond are all currently fishing very well.

There are some great opportunities right now, so come on up and enjoy the forest.

FENTON LAKE IS...now open for fishing on a limited basis as there is some open water at the north end of the lake. With warm, sunny weather predicted for the next week, I expect the lake to be completely free of ice within the next few days. The state park is open for day use, but camping is limited to the five electrical sites by reservation only.

Historically, most forest roads open on April 15th for the opening of turkey season, wood harvesting, dispersed camping and other recreational use...however, with the abundant snow and mud, I don't see the gates being opened until May.

The rivers are in full runoff mode making for difficult fishing, however, the Rio Cebolla above the lake is fishing very well right now, as is the Kid's Pond at the hatchery.

ANOTHER FEW INCHES...overnight bringing our snow total for the season to 118 inches, a new record. Previous high (since I've been keeping track) was the winter of 2018/19 at 110 inches. Combine this, with our record rain total of 21.50 inches last year, we have had a monster 12 months. Check out our website, JemezCentral.com for full rain and snow totals and other cool stuff.

Are we done with the snow yet? Stay tuned. Things can dry out pretty quickly, but hopefully our fire season will be limited.

THIS POST IS FOR THE...anglers among you. Effective Monday, March 13th, Fenton Lake is now closed to all fishing. The ice is too thin to safely ice fish and there is no open water to fish from the shore or a boat. When the ice does come off, fishing will be fabulous. We are two to three weeks away from that. Amanda's will keep you posted and up-to-date.

Additionally, the creeks and rivers are mostly covered with ice still, or if free of ice, running high and discolored with spring runoff conditions. Look for runoff to continue well into April. The Rio Cebolla, above the lake, is normally your best option this time of year.

In short...it's going to be pretty tough fishing for awhile.

Please share with your angler buddies.

PLEASE BE AWARE...that although it is March and spring may be busting out at lower elevations, it is not so much the case here in the Jemez.

Please do no be tempted to bring your tents, trailers or motor homes to the mountains just yet. We have had a wonderful snow year, so there is much snow and mud to deal with. Other than Vista Linda Campground south of Jemez Springs, all Forest Service Campgrounds will remain closed until May. Forest Service roads will remain locked and closed until mid-April.

There are some opportunities for day use activities so we'd love to see you. We appreciate you all.

Please share.

FOR THE FIRST TIME...in awhile, NMDGF has provided quantities of the hard copy Hunting Proclamation Booklet and is now available at Amanda's. The deadline to apply for draw hunts is March 22, 2023. The deadline for the required harvest report has passed, but for an $8.00 late fee, the report can be filed online or on the phone. Last season's harvest report (even if un-successful) is required to apply for this year's hunts.

Also, best to always check with the store prior to leaving vehicles for extended periods. In this case, a real hinderinance to snow removal.

PRETTY CHILLY UP HERE...and cold enough to form a nice, safe layer of ice at FENTON LAKE. Effective Friday, January 6th the lake is now open for ice fishing. The state park is open for day use from 7 AM till 7 PM every day. Entry fees are $5 per vehicle...cash only. Fenton has been stocked heavily and fishing will be fast and furious.
Amanda's has a great selection of live bait and ice fishing tackle and gear.

12/30/2022

JUST A QUICK...bit of information. Effective today (December 29th), all forest roads within the SFNF-Jemez Ranger District are now closed and gated. Normally this happens after the first of the year, historically January 2nd. I'm guessing the slightly early closure is because of the recent snow and the forecast for more this weekend.

This will affect wood gatherers, campers and those wishing to drive to San Antonio Hot Spring. Access is available throughout the winter on foot, snowshoe or skis. Forest roads will remain closed until mid-April.
Please share.

BEAUTIFUL DAY...in the neighborhood. White Christmas? Nope. White New Years? Looks likely with another storm moving in for the weekend. Good start to our much needed winter snowpack. Keep it coming.

Also, just a reminder that Amanda's and Andy's will both be open regular hours on New Years Eve and Day. 8:30 AM - 6:30 PM at Amanda's and noon - 6:30 PM at Andy's.

HOLIDAY HOURS AND ICE...are the themes of this post.

Amanda's and Andy's will both be closed on Christmas Day. Both will be open regular hours on New Years Day. Amanda's will be open on Thanksgiving Day from 8:30 AM till 1:00 PM for your convenience. Andy's will be closed for Thanksgiving.

Now for the ice. All streams above Battleship Rock are generally ice covered making for difficult fishing. There is some open water, but not much. The Jemez River from Battleship Rock on south and below the village is ice free and provides a wonderful wintertime fishing experience. NMDGF stocks this section throughout the winter. Fenton Lake is completely covered with a thin layer of ice and is closed for fishing as there is no open water and the ice is not safe for ice fishing. We'll keep you updated as conditions improve.

STATE OF THE FOREST AND FREE...fishing day. The Jemez Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest has re-opened that portion of the forest that was closed due to burn scar flood danger. All recreation sites from Battleship Rock Picnic Area south along the Jemez River down to the Gilman turnoff are now open for public use. Paliza Campground remains closed as does the Gilman Tunnels to through traffic.
San Antonio, Redondo and Jemez Falls Campgrounds will remain open through mid-October. Vista Linda Campground is open year-around. All forest roads will remain open for all public use through the end of the year.
Fenton Lake State Park is open for day use every day from 6 AM-9 PM. Overnight camping is restricted to the five electrical sites (open year-around) by reservation only as the state park has closed all other camping loops for the season.

This Saturday, September 24th is Free Fishing Day in the State of New Mexico including all waters in the Jemez Mountains. No fishing license is required on Saturday for residents and non-residents alike. All other rules and regulations apply. NMDGF has stocked Fenton Lake and other Jemez waters this week, so fishing for the stocked rainbow trout should be fabulous.

Now is a great time to visit the Jemez as there are less people, less bugs, better fishing...and great weather.

BETTER THAN...spring runoff 2022. Recent monsoonal rains have swollen Rio San Antonio behind Amanda's to levels not seen even during recent spring runoff conditions. Grateful for the moisture. Everything's green and beautiful.

05/18/2022

IT WAS INEVITABLE...and it is happening. Beginning at 8:00 AM, Thursday, May 19th, the Santa Fe National Forest will go into Stage III Forest Closure. This means that the forest will be off limits to all public use for the duration of the closure...hopefully until the first part of July when the monsoon rains kick in. The forest is extremely dry and with active wildfires in progress there is no need to recreate in the forest at this time. Additionally, the Cibola National Forest and the Carson National Forest will close. Fenton Lake State Park will also close to all public use.

Just a reminder to the local folks that live in the Jemez full or part time...Sandoval County has issued its own fire restrictions. No burning of wood, weeds, slash, trash or charcoal. Propane stoves and grills are allowed.

This will be a tough time for all businesses in the Jemez, including Amanda's and Andy's, but this is a necessary step to protect the forest and structures. Pray or dance for rain.

Please share this important information.
