NEITHER YOU, NOR THIS GUY... need a fishing license to legally fish in the State of New Mexico this weekend. September 28-29 is free fishing weekend for residents and non-residents alike. All other rules and regulations apply. This happens twice a year, once in June and the other in September.

Come on up and take advantage of a beautiful fall day in the mountains and well stocked waters. After a 10 to 12 week hiatus, the stocking truck has re-appeared over the last few weeks and there are plenty of fish to put a bend in your fishing pole.

THE STOCKING TRUCK...has made a re-appearance, at least at Fenton Lake. Last week, NMDGF stocked 300 Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout brood fish, 16-20 inches, and this week, 1040 Rainbow Trout (also brood fish). This is a great weekend to come on up to the Jemez, enjoy a day at the lake and have a real opportunity to latch onto a large trout. Rio Cebolla and the Kid's Pond have also been recently stocked.

JUST A QUICK WORD...about fishing for the Labor Day Weekend. To put it mildly, fishing in the Jemez has been terrible over the last 10 weeks or so, due to the NMDGF inability to stock Fenton Lake and most of the streams because of warm water conditions.
This week there was some stocking activity, but not enough to positively affect fishing too much IMO.
Fenton Lake...350 Cutthroats
Rio Cebolla...450 Rainbows
Kid's Pond...450 Rainbows
Of course, there are plenty of wild Browns available for those that know where and how to fish for these beauties.

The weather for the weekend is looking fabulous, so plan on coming on up and enjoying the beauty of the mountains, whether for a day or for the long weekend.

CLOSURES AND FISHING...updates for August 9th. Oddly, with still a lot of summer visitation season yet to come, many popular recreation areas are closed. Las Conchas Day Use, San Diego Overlook and the upper parking lot for Battleship Rock Picnic Area are all closed for paving maintenance. La Cueva Picnic Area is closed for stream erosion control improvements. Spanish Queen Picnic Area is also closed...not sure why. These are all necessary projects, but I just question the timing and the duration. Having said all of this, and not to be too negative, I am grateful that the vast majority of the Jemez recreation areas are open for your enjoyment.

We invite you to visit and enjoy the beauty and lushness of our moisture infused forest, however, you need to be aware of the fishing conditions that could be best described as...poor. Because of warm water conditions (typical for this time of year) NMDGF has been unable to stock Fenton Lake and the streams for over 8 weeks. So, not many stocker rainbows to tighten your lines, but there are plenty of resident, self-sustained populations of brown trout, if you are willing to venture off the beaten path and fish a little differently. Worms, spinners and flies are the ticket for the browns and they are plentiful. Stop into Amanda's and we'll point you in the right direction.

Sorry for the lengthy post. Just trying to dispense pertinent information. Please share.

ONE DOOR OPENS...another closes. Effective Friday, June 21st, FR 144 is now open for all recreational use. Please be aware that there are still some logging activities in the area and there is no camping on FR 144 between mile posts 3 - 9. This area is well signed. Please be careful and aware of the restrictions.

About the same time, FR 376 is now closed at the Gilman Tunnels due to a rock slide issue. Access to FR 376 is available only from the north off Hwy 126. Sometimes, these things can take awhile to clear up. We'll keep you updated.

We've had good rains lately and things are green and gorgeous. Enjoy your public lands.

ONLY A FEW DAYS...after the Jemez Ranger District raised the fire danger from 'MODERATE' to 'HIGH', the skies have opened up this afternoon to the tune of nearly a half inch of liquid gold. After a cool and damp spring, the last few weeks have been hot and dry, making for increased fire danger. Very fortunate rain event. More on the way for tomorrow.

Also, please weigh in on which of the fire danger signs do you like better. After close examination, do you like the old 'Smokie' sign or the newer dial rendition? Just curious.

THINGS ARE RAMPING UP...here in the Jemez and here's the skinny, plus four important things to remember. Also, a Blue Heron fishing on Rio San Antonio behind Amanda's. (photo courtesy of Kathy Frentheway)

All forest service campgrounds and picnic areas are now open for the summer season.
* Vista Linda Campground...OPEN year-round (first come, first served)
* Redondo Campground...now OPEN (first come, first served)
* Paliza Campground...now OPEN (first come, first served) The Paliza Group Site is open by reservation only.
*Jemez Falls Campground is now OPEN (by reservation only)
* San Antonio Campground is now OPEN (by reservation only)
*Fenton Lake State Park is now open for camping with only sites 1-30 being currently available. (by reservation only) The five electric sites remain closed. There is no potable water available at the state park at this time. The park is open for day use from 6 am to 9 pm everyday.

Reservations for the state park can be made at reserveamerica.com and the forest service campgrounds at recreation.gov.

Here are a few things to remember:
* Forest Roads 144 and 378 will remain gated and closed for the foreseeable future as there is an on-going forest thinning project for that area. FR 376 north to the hot springs remains closed to vehicles until July 1st.
* Please be sure that you fill the fresh water tanks in your RVs and trailers prior to traveling to the Jemez, as there are very limited to no opportunities here.
* Be aware that no matter where you purchase your New Mexico fishing license (including Amanda's) you will be required to provide the last four digits of your social security number.
This is particularly problematic for those purchasing a junior license (age 12 through 17 years old) that may not have it memorized.
* There is very limited trash disposal, so please plan to 'pack it in, pack it out'. Also, although there are currently no fire restrictions, please use extreme caution with your campfires.

Sorry for the long post, but this is important and timely information. Please share and share again.

IMPORTANT NEWS AND INFORMATION...with regard to recreation in the Jemez Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest.
San Antonio Campground is now open (early) for public use and is open on a first come, first served basis through May 13th, at which time the reservation system will go into effect. Vista Linda Campground is open year-round, first come, first served. All other Forest service campgounds will remain closed until May 14th. All campgounds (Redondo excepted) will require reservations through 'recreation.gov.'. Forest Roads 144, 378 (Barley Canyon) and FR376 north to the hot springs remain gated and closed. All other forest roads are now open.

Fenton Lake State Park is currently undergoing some changes that will be challenging in the short term. All camping loops within the state park are closed as new vault toilets are being installed. At least some of the camping loops will be open on May 14th. Tree thinning activity in the park will restrict parking and some day-use opportunities. Please be patient. Having said that, Fenton Lake was stocked (2150 rainbows) this week and is fishing very well. The park is now open for day-use from 6AM to 9PM daily.

All rivers and creeks are running high with some color and are currently very fishable. Now is a great time to fish the Jemez waters.

CAMPING IN THE JEMEZ...is back. FR 376 is now open for camping and all recreational use effective Thursday, April 18th. FR 10, 144, 378 and 314 remain closed. All forest service campgrounds and all Fenton Lake camping loops remain closed until May.

I drove FR 376 today from top to bottom and found the road pretty rough with only a few patches of snow and mud. However, be careful going off the road to camp as there is still plenty of snow in the shaded areas with wet, mushy ground.

Several recommendations.
*Fill your fresh water tanks before you come up, as there is virtually no place to do that up here.
*Access to 376 is best from the top, off of HWY 126, as Gilman Tunnels, although open, is narrow with several fallen rocks in the road way north of the tunnels making it even more narrow.
*Also, please remember that the new license year for fishing began April 1st. Be sure to get your new license on-line or at Amanda's.

Enjoy and please share.

ANOTHER TEN INCHES...of new snow overnight. Power and internet have been out since last night. I drove down to San Ysidro to make this post. The roads are tricky all the way south of Jemez Springs. Be careful. Be grateful.
