Drinking this Villa Malacari Rosso Conero over the span of 2-3 days was like stopping time. There were no smoke and mirrors here. No flashy new oak, no international varieties to round it out, no high tech winemaking techniques. It feel like a wine that has been made the same way since the winery started over 500 years ago. And it has. It is literally trapping time in a bottle. Read more: https://mailchi.mp/thecellardor/back-up-the-truck-value-a-haunting-italian-beauty-that-blew-us-away

Nothing is rushed at Lopez. Even their Cubillo Crianza, the youngest of their wines, is aged for eight years, well beyond the required – and most common – aging period of a year and a half. This practice extends all the way up to their Gran Reserva, which are often aged for over 15 years before being released. A Lopez de Heredia red is Rioja at the height of its powers: earthy, herbaceous, soulful, and worthy of further aging. There's simply nothing else like them. https://mailchi.mp/thecellardor/current-and-library-release-lopez-de-heredia-riojas-1055996

The Nuns of Monastero Suore Cistercensi! Paolo Bea's wines are a cornerstone of our shop. They combine power, drinkability, & a deep sense of place like few other wines can. But it seems there's less and less to go around every year. So it's great to see the Bea family extend their influence beyond their native Umbria over the past few years. Today we're excited to offer one of our favorite projects under the Bea umbrella: Monastero Suore Cistercensi in Lazio! We've got a minuscule allocation of one of the most cult producers of Grand Cru, Pinot Noir based Champagnes here today. The 4th generation winery led by Francis Ouriet, makes some of the most concentrated and vinous Champagnes that I have ever come across, and have been a favorite of mine now for 2 decades. Egly's Champagnes exhibit power and elegance like no other. They are the pinnacle style of red-fruited Champagnes. Check out what we've got coming here! https://mailchi.mp/thecellardor/the-elusive-powerful-elegant-champagnes-of-egly-ouriet

In April of 2010, I made my second trip to Italy and my second trip to Montalcino, I'll never forget it. Olivia and I lived on the North Fork of Long Island. In the span of a year and a half we got engaged, bought a house and got married in the fall of 2009. We had also found out we were pregnant with our first child in winter of 2010. Fond memories of Uccelliera in Montalcino. For more please follow the link - https://mailchi.mp/thecellardor/2019-brunellos-are-hot-heres-part-1055952

Four different are here, including their San Jeronimo and Potrero Grande single agave estates, and the super rare 106 overproof distillers cut “puntas”. Hands down one of our favorite blue agave producers and ones we can not get often.

We can’t even sell tonic water to go with your bottle of gin in NY. Or a nice hunk of cheese to go with your wine. But grocery stores and lobbyists think they should be able to sell wine next to their toilet paper. If we could, we would surely blow away the selection of cheeses, charcuterie, breads, dried goods, tonics, mixers, and produce that you’d find at the grocery store. I’d love to talk to you about this amazing artisan cheese or meat we got from a small producer/importer in the same fashion we talk about our wines. Let’s allow food in wine stores if they want wine in grocery stores.

After championing cider, furiously, for the last decade, we just got this. Proud of what we’ve done and proud of what all the Cidermakers have done. Before this category existed in the way it does today, we were helping to educate and perpetuate it’s growth. First real cider club in the US I’m pretty sure, which continues to be the best damn cider club in the country thanks to .mayora and all the great Cidermakers and importers (you can sign up on our website!) Heck, we even went out on a limb and included “cider” in the name of our store in 2013, that’s how much we believed in the category. When we opened, we could find maybe a half a dozen to a dozen ciders from around the world. That quickly grew to a few dozen over the next few years, we even saw a cider only importer open their doors (Rowan Imports! RIP) who used to drive up a truckload of cases to us from NYC. And now we are curating ciders from all over the globe and we have seen the industry blast off and explode in quality and creativity. Cider coming places we never imagined would make cider when we started. And we have an entire section dedicated to cider, that is as large or larger than some of our wine sections by country! We have educated, from the ground up, literally thousands upon thousands of people who come in here. You know how many times we have heard the question, “what is cider?”

We’ve talked until we are blue in the face. And we will keep on keeping on.

Thanks to the American Cider Association for recognizing and thanks to everyone out there who nominated us for this.

I also have to give a shout-out to finger lakes cider. Where literally the best damn cider in the world is being made. We are in the Mecca for it right here in our backyard. We love our local producers.

Michael Cruse is now, without question, considered the best sparkling wine producer in the United States. He is carving his own path. Drawing from his mentors, but creating his own style that is like nothing else, catapulting his wines to a level that has yet to be seen in American wine while taking a seat next to top Champagne producers on the world stage.

We’re excited to have a small amount of these wines to offer. Link in bio for full story.

Come taste these tonight (Friday) from 5-7pm!!

Tonight we will take a quick tour of Europe, starting in Piedmont at once of the great estates of Barbaresco, Roagna. Roagna is a hyper traditional estate producing some of the most collectible and ageworthy reds of the region from embarrassingly amazing crus . Once in a while we get our hands on their blanc, which is made in tiny quantities from Chardonnay and Nebbiolo vinified white.

Next we head south to Etna, the active volcanic region of Sicily where Nerello Mascalese is king. We're popping a great value red from Calabretta, another insanely traditional, stalwart producer of the region making wines of true character and complexity with minimal intervention. Calabretta ages their wines longer than anyone else before release, often holding wines for 6-8 years in the cellar. Tonight we taste their Cala Cala Rosso, an amazing Nerello Mascalese blended in cask to produce a complex, ready to drink, aged non-vintage red.

Next we head to Cali to Pinot country. We recently started working with a new producer called Spoken West. Winemaker Jamey Whetstone was a restaurant-turned-wine-guy who cut his teeth at the cellars of Dujac in Burgundy and Turley in California. His new labels are a wonderful entry into value bottlings of Pinot and Cabernet.

Lastly we finish strong with a wine that has been a mainstay here for multiple vintages. The cellar releases of Moulin Touchais in the Coteaux du Layon. These phenomenons are aged at their cellars for decades before release. The chenin vines are harvested late, when the fruit is deeply concentrated and often infected with that wonderful botrytis that makes the most famous sweet wines in the world what they are. Its a deeply profound wine with intense concentration, flavor, and a myriad of flavors and aromas. Often these wines are perfection for food pairings and can be just beguiling--we're excited to open up the 1996 vintage for you tonight.

Don't forget, our tastings are either BYO glassware, or you can purchase a sweet little reusable tasting glass with our logo on it for our cost of $3!

Got to strike a bucket list item. A visit to in Umbria for the first time. One of my all time favorite wineries, and one that has been transformative for me in the early days, and has never stopped being a part of my “wine life” to this day. It was magical to be able to see it in the flesh, meet Paolo’s son, Giampero (Paolo is now 94), and be hosted through a private tasting and tour of the winery. I was even yelled at by paolo’s wife, Mrs. Bea, from the window of their old home when we showed up too early for our appointment. “Torna più tardi! Ritorno!”, she said. So we explored the old center of Montefalco. In the pics you’ll see where they dry the grapes for appassimento, rest the wines in stainless for 3-4 years, and foudre for 1-3 years. The 2016 arboreus was mindbending- a skin macerated white with the character of nebbiolo, the reds were as magnificent as always, varying between power, elegance, structure and concentration, all while being almost untouched in the cellar and vineyard. Nature is in full display here. Also these are the natural wines that every natural winemaker should strive for, Zero flaws. And every conventional winemaker should take note that minimal intervention and little to no additions doesn’t mean “natty”.

Olivia and I visited today in SE Tuscany for a beautiful experience with Maria and her father Alessandro. We felt like, and we’re treated like, family. Maria has converted her family’s vines to organic over the last decade, something many Tuscan producers still are not doing. All concrete, anfora, and very little oak. Natural fermentations and zero additives. She’s taking the reigns from what was a conventional Chianti producer, and turning out beautiful and pure expressions of Sangiovese, ciligiolo, and maybe the only bottling of Mondeuse in all of Italy. Her “rosato” which was more of a light red despite the 24 hours of maceration, was absolutely delicious (I can’t wait for the 2023 which was absolutely amazing from tank). It’s a labor of love and passion for them to farm their vines without the use of chemicals, and to produce wines with little intervention in the cellar. Maria has plans for the estate, and like so many other children taking over, are taking care of the vines and wines better than generations past. The best is yet to come, I’m sure. Next to the wines, they have one of the most amazing, historic, outdoor wood ovens I have ever seen. We can’t wait to come back and fire it up! Thank you, Maria.
